Chapter 4

Dawson came home at seven. Earlier than usual. He set his briefcase down in the hallway with the careful precision of a man who had rehearsed the gesture, and when he walked into the kitchen where I was standing at the counter, I saw it in his face before he said a word—the particular arrangement of features that meant he was about to perform concern.

"Lilah's not doing well," he said. Not a greeting. Just that. "I went to see her this afternoon. The doctors are saying—" He stopped, rubbed his face with both hands like the weight of it was crushing him. "She's scared, Felicity. She doesn't have anyone."

I set down the knife I'd been using to slice an apple I had no intention of eating. "Okay."

"I feel a responsibility," he continued, watching my face now, searching for something—anger, maybe, or permission. "As an old friend. I know it's complicated, but I can't just walk away from someone who's dying."

The word *dying* sat between us like a stone dropped into still water. I watched the ripples of it cross his face—the noble suffering, the quiet martyrdom of a man doing the decent thing.

"Is there anything you want to tell me, Dawson?" I asked. My voice came out level. Calm. The kind of calm that sounds like nothing until you listen to what's underneath it.

He held my gaze for three seconds. I counted. Then his eyes slid away, found the countertop, the window, anywhere that wasn't my face.

"No," he said. "I just want you to understand."

I picked up my cup—tea, cold now, untouched—and carried it to the sink. I poured it out and watched it spiral down the drain, brown water disappearing into chrome.

"I understand everything," I said.

He left the kitchen. I heard him in the bedroom, changing clothes, the soft sounds of a man settling into his evening routine like nothing had shifted at all. Maybe for him, nothing had.

I stood at the sink until the light outside went from gray to black, and then I picked up my phone and called Sophie.

"I need a divorce attorney," I said when she answered. No preamble. No tears. Just the sentence, delivered clean.

There was a pause on the other end—not surprise, exactly. More like the sound of something finally breaking the surface after years underwater.

"Margaret Ellison," Sophie said immediately. Her voice had gone fierce and focused, the way it always did when she was protecting something. "She's the one. Old-school, old-money, does not lose. I'll text you her number right now."

"Thank you."

"Felicity," she said, softer now. "Are you okay?"

I looked at my reflection in the darkened window. A woman I barely recognized looked back.

"I will be," I said, and I meant it.

I called Margaret Ellison's office the next morning and scheduled a consultation for the following Tuesday. I did not tell Dawson. I didn't tell anyone except Sophie. I went about my days the way I always had—prenatal vitamins at breakfast, doctor's appointments I attended alone, dinners I cooked and ate in silence across from a man whose phone lit up every seven minutes with messages he angled away from me.

On Thursday night, his phone buzzed during dinner. He glanced at it, and something in his face went tight.

"I need to go to the hospital," he said, already standing, already reaching for his jacket. "Lilah's asking for me. I'll be home by nine."

"Okay," I said.

He left. The door clicked shut behind him. I sat at the table for another twenty minutes, fork in hand, plate untouched, and then I stood up, put on my coat, and called a cab.

It was 11:47 p.m. when I walked through the automatic doors of Manhattan Presbyterian. I didn't call ahead. I didn't plan what I was going to say. I just carried the envelope Margaret had given me—divorce papers, already prepared, already signed by me—and I followed the signs to the oncology wing the way you follow a map to a place you've been trying not to arrive at for years.

The hallway smelled like disinfectant and something floral, cloying and wrong. Room 12B. The door was half-open. I could see the edge of a hospital bed, white sheets, the blue glow of a monitor.

I could hear voices.

I stopped just outside the door. My hand was on the frame. I could have knocked. I could have turned around. I could have done a hundred things that weren't this.

But I didn't.

I stepped into the doorway, and I saw them.

Dawson was leaning over the bed, both hands cradling Lilah's face, and he was kissing her. Not a peck. Not comfort. A real kiss, deep and desperate, the kind that erases every word he'd ever said about duty or decency or old friendship.

Lilah's hands were in his hair.

Neither of them saw me.

I stood there for five seconds. Maybe ten. Long enough to memorize it. Long enough to understand that this was not a mistake or a moment of weakness. This was the truth, finally uncovered, fluorescent-lit and undeniable.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I walked into the room, set the envelope on the bedside table beside a vase of white roses I knew he'd brought, and I said, very quietly:

"You're free now."

Dawson jerked back like I'd struck him. Lilah's eyes went wide, her mouth still red, her expression somewhere between triumph and shock.

I didn't wait for an explanation. I turned and walked out, and the sound of my heels on the linoleum was the only sound in the entire hallway, steady and sure, the rhythm of a woman who had finally stopped waiting for a man to choose her.
