Chapter 5

Nora found me in the healer's ward three days after they pulled me from the cells. I was sitting on the cot, staring at nothing, when she walked in with a folder tucked under her arm and a look on her face I'd never seen before—sharp, focused, almost feral.

"I got you out," she said without preamble.

I blinked at her. My mind was still slow, thick with fever that hadn't fully broken. "What?"

"Detention protocols." She dropped the folder on the cot beside me. "Pack law requires healer certification for extended holding of any member with documented prior injury. You have medical records from the rogue raid. Three years old, but still active in the system." Her smile was thin and cold. "I filed the paperwork with the records officer before Spencer could block it. You're released."

I looked down at the folder. My hands were shaking. "How did you—"

"I've been studying pack law since the day you told me you needed to know the rules." She sat beside me, careful not to jostle the cot. "I'm not letting them bury you, Kailani. Not while I'm still breathing."

I pressed my palm to my sternum. The pup was still there. Still fighting. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet." Her jaw tightened. "Spencer's going to be furious when he finds out. You need to be ready."

I was ready. The cold place inside me had grown until there was almost nothing else left.

The summons came the next morning through the mind-link. Spencer's Alpha tone slammed into my skull like a physical blow, dragging me out of shallow sleep.

"Border patrol. Cascade pass. One hour. Wolf form."

I tried to resist. My wolf whimpered and pushed back, but the tone was absolute. My body moved before my mind could catch up—pulling on clothes, walking toward the pack house entrance, my legs carrying me where he commanded even as everything inside me screamed.

Spencer was waiting outside with Aylin and a small patrol escort. His eyes swept over me once, cold and assessing. "You'll run the pass with Aylin. Luna visibility exercise. The pack needs to see you functioning."

I looked at Aylin. She stood beside him in running clothes, her expression serene, her hand resting lightly on her stomach. That calculated gesture. That permanent claim.

"The pass is dangerous this time of year," I said quietly. "The snow's unstable."

"Then stay close to the escort." Spencer's voice carried that edge of impatience I'd learned to recognize. "You're still Luna. Act like it."

I shifted without another word. My wolf form felt wrong—too thin, too weak, the fever still burning beneath my fur. But I ran because the Alpha tone left me no choice.

The Cascade pass cut through the mountains like a scar, narrow and treacherous, with cliffs towering on one side and a ravine dropping away on the other. The snow was deep, the path barely visible beneath the white. I ran behind Aylin's tawny wolf, my paws finding purchase on ice-slicked stone, my warrior instincts cataloguing everything even through the haze of exhaustion.

The escort was too far back. I noticed it first at the quarter-mile mark—wolves who should have been flanking us were hanging thirty yards behind, their formation deliberately loose. Spencer ran with them, his silver-grey wolf visible through the trees, but he wasn't closing the gap.

Aylin slowed at the narrowest section of the pass. I slowed with her, my wolf's hackles rising, some primal warning screaming through the bond we no longer trusted.

She looked back at me once. Her wolf's eyes were flat. Empty.

Then she lunged toward the cliff face and slammed her shoulder into a specific outcropping of rock.

The mountain came down.

Boulders the size of wolves crashed onto the path. Ice and stone and crushing weight. I tried to run but there was nowhere to go—the ravine on one side, the avalanche on the other. Something massive hit my ribs and I went down hard, my wolf's body crumpling beneath the impact. Pain exploded through every nerve. I tasted blood. Felt bones snap.

Through the roar of falling rock, I heard Spencer's howl. I thought—stupidly, desperately—that he was coming for me.

He shifted mid-run and raced toward Aylin.

She was standing at the edge of the slide, barely touched, her tawny fur clean. Spencer's jaws closed around her scruff and he carried her away from the path, away from the danger, cradling her like something precious.

I lay buried under stone and ice and watched him go.

He didn't look back.

My wolf should have died there. Every instinct said to let go, to stop fighting, to let the cold take us. But the pup—that stubborn, impossible flutter beneath my broken ribs—wouldn't let me.

I dragged myself out from under the rocks one inch at a time. My hind leg was shattered. My ribs screamed with every breath. Blood stained the snow beneath me. But I moved.

I followed the patrol's scent trail through the trees, my vision narrowing to the next tree, the next rock, the next breath. Warrior training I'd learned a lifetime ago. Track. Move. Survive.

I don't know how long I crawled through that snow. Hours, maybe. The sun was lower when I finally heard voices—patrol scouts returning along the border route. One of them saw me and shouted.

The last thing I remember before the darkness took me was someone's hands lifting me carefully, a voice saying, "Get the healer. Now. She's still breathing."

I woke in the healer's ward with white walls and the smell of antiseptic and Nora's face hovering over mine, streaked with tears.

"The pup?" My voice was barely a whisper.

"Still there." Her hand gripped mine so hard it hurt. "Still fighting. Just like you."

I closed my eyes. Pressed my palm flat against my sternum. And felt the last thread of anything I'd ever felt for Spencer Harlow snap clean in half.

The cold place inside me wasn't cold anymore. It was ice. It was iron. It was absolute.

And it was ready.
