Chapter 1

: The True Young Miss

When the real heiress showed up at our door, she declared my fiancé from a prominent family was hers.

'Isn't it better to study, earn money, and just be fabulous on my own?'

So, I threw myself into studying for the postgraduate and civil service exams.

My first assignment after starting my new position was to audit my ex-fiancé's company's books.

That evening, my now ex-fiancé was waiting for me downstairs, holding a bouquet of flowers.

"Sera, there's something I need your help with."

The day the real heiress returned, our home was decked out with a red carpet and celebratory streamers everywhere.

You'd think it was a national holiday, the way everyone was celebrating.

"Stella, you've suffered so much all these years out there. Now that you're back, Mom will definitely make it up to you."

On the sofa, my adoptive parents clung to the real heiress, crying their eyes out.

Even I was a little moved by the scene.

Just as I was about to leave, Stella ran up to me, looking uneasy. "Sister, you're dressed so beautifully. I'm so envious."

Mrs. Sterling immediately took her by the hand. "Come on, Stella, I'll take you to see your room. I've prepared lots of beautiful clothes for you. Go and see if you like them."

But when I went upstairs, I discovered they had given my room directly to Stella. All my things had been moved to a side bedroom half the size.

"Sera, you're not home very often anyway, so I had someone clear out your room for your sister. Is that all right?"

'She was asking for forgiveness, not permission. What could I possibly say?'

I licked my lips and said calmly, "Whatever you've arranged is fine."

'After all, now that the real heiress was back, not kicking me out on the spot was as generous as they were going to get.'

"Sister's room is so beautiful. I really love it."

Stella twirled around a couple of times in the room, then ran over to the wardrobe, pulling out two dresses to hold up against herself.

"Sister, look. Do I look good in this?"

The dress in her left hand was the same style as the one I was wearing.

I frowned. 'This 'sister' of mine really isn't very likable.'

I didn't say anything. Stella's face fell again. "I'm sorry, Sister. Are you mad that I moved into your room? Please don't hate me, okay? If it's a problem, I can just move out."

Me?

'When did I say I hated her?'

Mrs. Sterling immediately started cooing at her, then shot me a look, signaling for me to comfort her too.

'No way was I going to do that.'

Just then, she pointed to a framed photo on the nightstand. "Who's this guy?"

It was a photo of me and my fiancé, Zane Vance.

Ours was an arranged marriage to unite our families; there weren't any deep feelings between us. That was our only photo together.

The housekeeper who moved my things must have just carelessly placed it on the nightstand.

"I'm so envious of you, Sister. You have a successful career and such a handsome fiancé, unlike me. I have nothing. But I suppose that's right. An outstanding woman like you can find someone who loves you no matter where you go. But I can't."

As she spoke, she lowered her head again, and large teardrops began to fall.

"If only I hadn't been taken away when I was a baby. Maybe then I could be like you, Sister, with a marriage arranged by the family and a fiancé who loves me."

'Every sentence was about me. Every word was an accusation that I had stolen her life and her fiancé.'

I was getting annoyed and was just about to leave when Mrs. Sterling took Stella's hand and said in a meaningful tone, "This engagement hasn't been formally finalized."

"You're my daughter. It's only right that you be the one to marry Zane Vance."
