Chapter 2

The car stopped moving before I understood we had arrived.

Someone opened a door. Cold air, then not cold—warm air, dry and clean, smelling of pine resin and something medicinal and, underneath it all, of him. Declan lifted me out with the twins already tucked against his other arm, one in the crook, the second pressed to his chest by the flat of his palm. He carried all three of us across a threshold I did not see.

"Elara," he said. One word. A door opened somewhere ahead of us.

The healing wing was white and gold-lit and quiet in the way expensive things are quiet. I registered the details in flashes—heated floors, a bed already turned down, an IV stand waiting, two Lycan warriors in the corridor whose shoulders filled the doorframes. Kenneth's best warriors would have looked like boys next to them.

A woman in a healer's coat stepped forward. Small, dark-haired, eyes the color of slate.

"Set her down, Your Highness. Gently."

Declan lowered me to the bed. His hand lingered at the small of my back a half-second longer than it needed to, and then he stepped away to let her work.

Elara's hands moved fast and clinical over me. Blood pressure. Pupils. The pulse at my wrist. Her fingers touched the cold scar on my neck and I felt her go still—just for a breath, the way water goes still before it freezes—and then she moved on without a word. She did not look at Declan. She did not need to. The fury in her face was so controlled it was almost a form of prayer.

"Bond trauma," she said quietly. "Wolf dormancy. Postpartum hemorrhage still active. She needs fluids, warmth, and no one raising their voice in this wing for forty-eight hours."

"Done," Declan said.

She turned to the twins next. Lifted the first from Declan's arm and laid her—him?—on the warmed exam pad. I watched her hands. I watched her face. She was halfway through the second twin when her nostrils flared and her whole body went motionless in a way that had nothing to do with medicine.

She wrote something on her chart. She did not say what she had scented. She only glanced, once, at Declan, and something passed between them that I was too tired to read.

"Both healthy," she said. "Strong hearts. I'll want blood work in the morning."

"Tomorrow," Declan said.

She inclined her head and left.

He settled the twins into a heated crib beside the bed with a care that surprised me. He did not fumble. He did not hesitate. He tucked the blanket at the smaller one's shoulders and adjusted the crib's angle so I could see them without lifting my head, and then he took the chair at my side and sat down like the chair had been placed there by decree.

He did not touch me. He did not ask me anything. He simply occupied the space the way weather occupies a valley.

I slept.

I woke in the dark gasping, Kenneth's voice still inside my ears—*I, Kenneth Harlow, Alpha of Hollowridge Pack, reject you*—the mark on my neck cold all over again, my hands flying up to my throat—

"Serena."

His voice. Once. Placed in the room like a stone dropped in still water.

I stopped. My hand stayed at my throat.

He was already awake in the chair. He had not moved. In the low amber light from the crib warmer I could see the shape of him—leaned forward, forearms on his knees, watching me with an attention so complete it was its own form of touch.

"You're here," he said. Quieter now.

"I'm here." My voice came out rough. I lowered my hand.

He did not reach for me. He waited until my breathing evened out, and then he leaned back in the chair, and I understood he had been awake for hours and would stay awake for however many more it took.

I slept again.

On the second day I was strong enough to sit up. Strong enough to hear.

Declan and another man—taller, leaner, sharper at the edges—stood in the corridor with the door cracked. Not carelessly. Deliberately. I understood that a beat after I understood the voices were carrying.

"—eastern trade route redirected six weeks ago. Confirmed permanent last Tuesday."

"His petition?"

"Blocked at Council three months back. He hasn't been told which member vetoed. He's been writing letters into a closed file."

"Warriors?"

"Four are holding our offers. Signed contingent on extraction. They can move within the week."

Six weeks. Three months.

I looked at the twins in the crib. Two small breathing shapes under the blanket. My hand went to the hollow of my throat where the pendant used to hang and found only the cold scar.

Six weeks ago I had still been calling Kenneth's name in a house that would not answer. Three months ago I had been carrying these babies through a hallway where Jasmine passed me on the stairs and squeezed my arm and asked how I was feeling.

Declan had already been dismantling him. Piece by piece. Quietly. Without asking me.

Something moved through my chest that was not gratitude. Not entirely. It was warmer than fear and colder than love and it sat somewhere I did not have a word for yet.

In the corridor, Declan said, "Anything else?"

"Kenneth is coming."

A pause.

"When?"

"Tomorrow. He's bringing her."
