Chapter 3

The heavy soundproof door rebounded off the drywall with a bone-rattling crack.

"Are you crazy? Cut it off right now!" Julian screamed, spit flying from his lips.

He tore at his silk tie, yanking the knot halfway down his chest. His right fist clamped around a thin piece of plastic. The platinum membership card for Le Bernardin. He must have pulled it from his wallet downstairs to prove to someone, anyone, that he had a legitimate dinner meeting.

"The presentation is over, Julian," I said, keeping my posture perfectly straight.

"Turn the screens black!" He lunged across the narrow room, diving straight for the master keyboard.

I sidestepped his charging frame. My hand closed around the condensation-slicked glass of ice water resting near the monitors.

I swung my arm in a sharp arc.

The freezing liquid splashed directly across his chest, soaking the lapels of his custom two-thousand-dollar Tom Ford suit. Ice cubes bounced off his shoulders and clattered onto the carpet.

He gasped, stumbling backward. He stared at his ruined jacket, his chest heaving.

"What is wrong with you?" he bellowed.

"You looked overheated." I set the empty glass back on the desk. "I thought you needed to cool down before you spoke to your shareholders."

Julian wiped the dripping water from his chin. His handsome features contorted into a mask of pure, ugly rage.

"You ruined me!" he shouted, taking a step toward me. "Seven years of building my reputation, and you burn it down for a petty jealousy stunt?"

"Your reputation?" I asked.

I pressed my fingers flat against the cold metal of the control board. I pushed down until my knuckles turned stark white. The icy surface anchored the furious pounding in my chest. I watched his face twist in helpless anger. A genuine smile finally broke across my face, easing the tight ache in my jaw. Seven years of exhaustion washed away under the fluorescent lights.

"You used corporate funds to fly your mistress to Aspen," I continued. "The SEC will call that fraud. Not jealousy."

"I am the CEO!"

"You are a figurehead. I built the software. I secured the patents."

"Nobody cares about the code, Clara!" He waved the platinum card in my face. "They care about the image! I sell the vision! I sit at the tables with men like Arthur Pendelton and convince them to keep throwing money at us!"

"And you convinced Maya to spread her legs in the Plaza elevator."

Julian flinched. The muscle in his jaw ticked rapidly. He dropped his arm, his aggressive posture deflating for a fraction of a second.

"She means nothing to me," he spat, lowering his voice into a dangerous hiss. "It was a stress relief. A mistake. You are my wife."

A sharp laugh ripped from my throat. It sounded entirely foreign to my own ears. Loud, biting, and entirely devoid of humor.

"Stress relief?" I echoed. "At five thousand dollars a night?"

"I was going to end it!"

"You bought her Cartier yesterday."

He slammed his fist against the side of the metal server rack.

Leo, still cowering in the corner, let out a tiny whimper.

"Get out!" Julian barked at the technician, not even looking at him.

Leo didn't need to be told twice. He scrambled out of the shadows, his sneakers squeaking against the floorboards. He sprinted through the open doorway, nearly tripping over the discarded trash can in the hall, and disappeared toward the elevators.

We were alone.

Julian stalked closer. The water from his suit dripped onto the floor, leaving dark, spreading stains on the gray carpet. He changed his tactic. His tone shifted entirely, taking on that smooth, persuasive cadence he used in board meetings.

"Clara, listen to me," he pleaded, holding his hands up in a calculated gesture of surrender. "We can fix this. I know you are hurt. I know I messed up. But we built this empire together."

"You didn't build anything," I corrected him. "You just spent the profits while I slept under my desk."

"I kept us afloat when the market crashed!" he argued, stepping closer. The smell of expensive cologne and fear radiated off his damp suit. "I charmed the investors. You sit in a lab all day. You don't know how the real world operates. You need me to be the face of this brand."

"I know how a GPS safety bracelet operates."

He closed his eyes, exhaling a sharp, frustrated breath. "I only gave you that bracelet because I care about you."

"You gave it to me so you could track my location. You needed to know exactly when I left the office so you could sneak Maya into our bed."

"That is a lie!"

"I matched the timestamps, Julian. Every time my tracker pinged on the highway, your hotel room key swiped the penthouse door. You even used our joint credit card for the room service."

He opened his eyes. The fake sincerity vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. The mask completely slipped off.

"You are going to fix this," he demanded, his voice dropping an octave.

"I already did. The cancer is out of the company."

"You will march down to that ballroom right now." He pointed a rigid finger toward the tinted glass window, where the flashing lights of the press cameras still illuminated the dark room. "You will take the microphone. You will tell the press you suffered a nervous breakdown. You forged the documents because you stopped taking your medication."

I stared into the eyes of the man I had slept next to for a decade. He really believed I would do it. He honestly thought his authority still held weight. For years, I had covered up his mistakes. I smoothed over his accounting errors. I smiled at corporate dinners while he took credit for my software designs.

He expected me to fold.

"No," I said.

"I will divorce you, Clara."

"I drafted the papers three days ago. They are waiting on your desk at home."

His eyes widened. The threat of abandonment, his ultimate weapon, dissolved into thin air. He took another step forward, trapping me between his soaked body and the edge of the master console.

"You want to destroy our marriage?" he asked, his voice trembling with a frantic, desperate energy. "Fine. But I will not let you take the company. I will freeze your assets. I will lock you out of the servers."

"I own forty percent."

"I will dilute your shares! I will tie you up in litigation until you are begging me to pay your rent!"

"You can't afford a lawyer, Julian. You maxed out your personal accounts to buy Maya that weekend charter flight. I checked the balances this morning. You have exactly four hundred dollars in your checking account."

"I will borrow the money!"

"From who? Arthur Pendelton just walked out of your gala. The rest of the board is currently staring at a giant photo of your tongue down your assistant's throat."

He opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out. His chest expanded rapidly. His face flushed a deep, mottled purple. The platinum card snapped in half under the pressure of his grip. He threw the broken plastic pieces at my feet. They bounced off the toe of my pump.

"You vindictive bitch," he snarled.

"You forgot the golden rule of business," I told him, refusing to break eye contact. "Never steal from the person who manages the ledger."

He snapped.

Julian lunged forward, crossing the remaining space between us in a single, violent stride. He raised his right hand high above his shoulder. His palm laid flat, his eyes wild with the pure intent to strike my face.

I did not flinch. I did not close my eyes. I stared straight at his descending hand.

A tall shadow filled the doorway.

A large, well-defined hand reached out of the periphery and firmly gripped his wrist mid-air.
