Chapter 1

The moment I saw him across that ceremony hall, I knew my life was over.

Not because he was my destined mate—that honor belonged to the golden-haired Alpha heir who'd just crushed my heart with his silence. No, the man staring at me with those predatory golden eyes was something far worse: Kael, the Alpha of Dark Blood Pack. The monster who'd supposedly killed his enemies with his bare hands.

"You," he said, pointing one scarred finger directly at me, "are mine."

The words echoed through the hall like a death sentence. I tried to run, tried to scream, but my body had turned to stone. The mate bond—that sacred connection I'd dreamed about my entire life—slammed into me like a physical blow, binding me to the most dangerous man in the territory.

As his warriors closed in around me, I caught one last glimpse of Aiden standing beside his father. Our eyes met across the distance, and I waited for him to speak up, to fight for me, to do something. Instead, he looked away.

That's when I realized the truth: I wasn't being rescued from my life as a lowly Omega servant. I was being traded. Sold. Handed over to a killer who saw me as nothing more than a political tool.

But what I didn't know then—what would change everything—was that monsters aren't born. They're made. And sometimes, if you're very lucky or very foolish, you might just be the one to unmake them.

The question is: will I survive long enough to try?

...

The morning light filtered through the cracked window of my tiny servant's quarters, casting pale shadows across the worn wooden floor. Today was my eighteenth birthday—the day I'd dreamed about for months, the day everything would finally change.

I stood before the small, tarnished mirror propped against the wall, smoothing down the fabric of my only good dress. The simple blue gown had cost me three months of saved coins, money I'd scraped together from the few tips sympathetic pack members occasionally left. The color brought out my eyes, or so I hoped. My hands trembled as I adjusted the neckline, trying to make it look more elegant than it was.

"Today, Aiden will finally claim me," I whispered to my reflection, practicing the smile I'd wear when he took my hand in front of the entire pack. "Today, I'll feel the mate bond."

My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, as anxious as I was. She'd been quiet for so long, waiting for this moment when she could finally recognize her other half. I pressed my palm against my chest, feeling my heart race with anticipation.

The memory of last week flooded back—Aiden pulling me into the shadows behind the pack house, his breath hot against my ear as he whispered, "Soon, Elena. Very soon, everything will be different." His hands had traced my waist with familiar hunger, and I'd melted into his touch like I always did. He hadn't said the words explicitly, but the promise was there in his kiss, in the way he held me like I was precious.

I picked up the small wildflower I'd found yesterday and tucked it behind my ear. It wasn't much, but it made me feel prettier, more worthy of standing beside the future Alpha.

The walk to the ceremony hall felt like floating on air. Pack members bustled around me, preparing for the coming-of-age ritual, but I barely noticed them. My entire world had narrowed to this single moment, this day when I would finally step out of the shadows and into the light as Aiden's chosen mate.

The great hall buzzed with excitement and nervous energy. Young wolves who'd turned eighteen this year stood in a loose circle, their families gathered around them with proud smiles. I had no family to stand with me, but that didn't matter. Soon, I'd have Aiden.

I spotted him across the room, tall and golden-haired, wearing the ceremonial white shirt that marked him as the Alpha heir. My breath caught in my throat. He was so beautiful, so perfect. And he was mine—or would be, in just a few minutes.

Alpha Marcus, Aiden's father and the pack leader, began the traditional words that would awaken our wolves' ability to sense their mates. The ancient ritual sent tingles through the air, magic crackling between the young wolves as their enhanced senses came alive.

This was it. This was the moment.

I walked toward Aiden on unsteady legs, my heart hammering so hard I was sure everyone could hear it. He stood near the front of the hall, surrounded by other high-ranking pack members, but his eyes found mine as I approached. I smiled—that practiced, hopeful smile—and reached out my trembling hand toward him.

Our eyes met.

I waited for the explosion of recognition, for my wolf to howl with joy, for the electric connection that would bind us together forever.

Nothing.

Absolute, crushing nothing.

My wolf remained silent, uninterested, as if Aiden were just another pack member. No spark, no pull, no destiny calling out to me. Just... emptiness.

Aiden's smile faltered, becoming uncomfortable and strained. His gaze darted away from mine, focusing on something over my shoulder. The color drained from his face, and I saw something I'd never seen before in his confident expression—guilt.

"Aiden?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sudden roaring in my ears.

He took a small step back, and that tiny movement shattered something inside my chest. The other pack members around us began to notice the awkward tension, their conversations dying as they turned to watch.

"Elena, I..." he started, but his words were cut off by a sudden, oppressive silence that fell over the entire hall.

The massive oak doors at the entrance burst open with a thunderous crash that made everyone jump. Cold air swept through the room, carrying with it the scent of pine, leather, and something darker—something that made my wolf suddenly lift her head with sharp attention.

Kael.

Even though I'd never seen him before, I knew instantly who he was. Everyone in the surrounding packs knew the stories, the whispered tales of the Dark Blood Pack's Alpha. He stood in the doorway like a nightmare made flesh, his massive frame filling the entrance. Scars crisscrossed his face and hands, telling stories of battles fought and won through sheer brutality. His dark hair was pulled back, revealing sharp cheekbones and eyes that seemed to burn with an inner fire.

Behind him stood a group of warriors, all bearing the same dangerous aura, but none commanded attention like their Alpha. The very air seemed to thicken with his presence, and I felt every wolf in the room submit slightly to his overwhelming dominance.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?" Alpha Marcus stepped forward, his voice steady despite the obvious tension.

Kael's gaze swept the room with predatory calculation, and I found myself shrinking back instinctively. This was the man who'd supposedly killed his enemies with his bare hands, who ruled his pack through fear and violence. What was he doing here?

Then, as if drawn by some invisible force, his eyes found mine across the crowded hall.

The world exploded.

My wolf didn't just stir—she went absolutely berserk, howling and clawing inside my mind with desperate, overwhelming need. The mate bond slammed into me like a physical blow, so powerful and sudden that my knees buckled. I gasped, my vision blurring as every cell in my body screamed recognition.

Mate. Mate. MATE.

No. This couldn't be happening. This had to be some horrible mistake.

Kael's eyes widened slightly, the only sign that he felt it too, before his expression hardened into something cold and calculating. A slow, predatory smile spread across his scarred face as he began walking toward me, the crowd parting before him like he was death itself.

I tried to step back, tried to run, but my legs wouldn't obey. The mate bond held me frozen, my wolf practically purring despite my terror. This monster, this killer, was supposed to be my other half?

"Interesting," Kael's voice was deep and rough, carrying easily across the silent hall. "It seems the Moon Goddess has a sense of humor."

He stopped just a few feet away from me, close enough that I could see the golden flecks in his dark eyes, close enough to smell his intoxicating scent that made my wolf whimper with want.

"You," he said, pointing one scarred finger directly at me, "are mine."
