When the Alpha Chose Her Over Me Novel Cover

When the Alpha Chose Her Over Me

Jake Sullivan’s first act upon returning to the Burns pack after his three-year mission was to publicly sever our mate bond. Rumors swirled that he had met a captivating red-haired Omega named Vanessa Cooper during his hunt for rogue werewolves. They had allegedly bonded over shared struggles, and now, he was determined to claim her as his mate. I stood in the pack hall, my gaze fixed on the couple before me. Jake, once my closest confidant, now looked every inch the hardened warrior, his broad shoulders and chiseled features exuding an Alpha’s commanding presence. Beside him, Vanessa clung to his arm, her fiery hair and delicate features painting a picture of fragility and allure. Her eyes, a striking shade of amber, met mine with a flicker of triumph that she quickly masked behind a demure smile. “Journi,” she began, her voice soft and sweet, “I just wanted to say how sorry I am—” “Don’t,” I interrupted, my tone cold. “We’re not friends, Vanessa. Let’s keep it that way.” Her lips trembled, and she pressed closer to Jake, who immediately wrapped a protective arm around her.

Chapter 2

The news of Jake Sullivan's rejection spread like wildfire through the pack.

Some pitied me, some argued for my dignity, and others simply reveled in my downfall.

But the most prevalent gossip was about how Jake doted on Vanessa Cooper, spoiling her with the resources of the Sullivan family.

Even Rosie Rivera, Jake's mother, adored her, going so far as to gift Vanessa the family’s ancestral silver pendant.

I ignored the rumors.

I was an orphan, taken in by the Burns pack after my father, Kane Burns, a respected Healer, died defending the pack against a rogue attack.

Since then, I’d been on my own, but my father had left me prime hunting territories and trading posts within the pack lands, ensuring my independence.

What I hadn’t expected was the audacity of the Sullivan family, especially Rosie.

When I stepped out of my home, Rosie was standing at the gate with a group of Deltas.

During the three years Jake had been away leading the rogue-hunting mission, I’d visited her often, acting as her future daughter-in-law.

Each time, I’d brought expensive gifts, even extending my generosity to her other family members.

Seeing me, Rosie’s sharp eyes narrowed, and she sneered.

“I heard you accepted my son’s rejection. He acted rashly, didn’t he?”

Her tone was sugar-coated, but I knew her visit wasn’t out of concern.

Sure enough, her expression darkened, and she added, “Even though the mate bond is broken, those hunting territories and trading posts should be transferred to Jake’s name.”

Melany Lewis, my personal guard, bristled and looked ready to snap, but I stopped her with a raised hand. Calmly, I asked Rosie for her reasoning.

“A lone she-wolf like you, holding onto such valuable resources—it’s like a child parading around with a treasure chest. These past years, it’s the Sullivan family that’s kept you safe. Handing over those territories is only fair. Don’t worry, we’ll still protect you as we always have.”

Her crimson lips moved with practiced ease, her words dripping with entitlement. Did she really think I, Journi Burns, was so easily intimidated?

Just as she reached the peak of her tirade, I unleashed a surge of my alpha aura, a dominant force that left her trembling and her skin pale.

“You—”

She choked on a gasp before collapsing in a heap.

I thought that would be the end of my dealings with Jake, but fate had other plans. We’d cross paths again sooner than I expected.

Five years ago, Alpha Layton Ortiz injured his legs trying to protect me from rogue werewolves. Because of his disability, he never got the opportunity to fully lead the Silver Moon Pack as he was meant to. Despite everyone blaming me for his injury, he stood by my side, insisting it was his own decision. To find a cure for his legs, I donated a substantial amount of blood every three months. Unexpectedly, my werewolf healing abilities allowed me to recover faster than expected, and I woke up earlier than anticipated. That was when I accidentally overheard him speaking with the pack’s Healer. "Luna Gloria's frequent blood donations are seriously affecting her health," the Healer said, his voice low but urgent. "And you know it was Rayne who intentionally exposed Luna Gloria's location to the rogues, leading to her parents' deaths in that tragedy." Alpha Layton took a drag on his cigarette before replying, his voice as cold as the winter wind, "Rayne's infected with an unidentified virus. If she doesn’t undergo a full-body transfusion, she’ll lapse into a coma again. I plan to compensate her with wealth and status for the rest of her life, but love—that’s not included." "This must remain a secret from Luna Gloria," he added, his words slicing through me like a blade.

I smoothed down the front of my silver gown for the twentieth time, my fingers trembling slightly as they traced the delicate beadwork. Three months of overtime shifts at the pack's coffee shop had paid for this dress—a dress I'd hoped would finally make me look like I belonged among the Silvermoon elite. Like I deserved to stand beside their future Alpha. "You can do this, Lauren," I whispered to my reflection, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach my eyes. Our marking ceremony was just weeks away. The Full Moon Festival was in full swing by the time I arrived at the clearing. Fairy lights twinkled in the trees surrounding the ceremonial grounds, and the enormous bonfire cast dancing shadows across the faces of pack members dressed in their finest. The house was a living inferno, the heat devouring the air in my lungs as I clutched my five-year-old daughter to my chest. Emily was dead weight, her skin already cooling even as the room turned into a furnace of orange and black. Through the stinging smoke, I saw my husband, Kenney, crawling toward the door with a wet handkerchief pressed to his face. He didn't look back at the crib, and he didn't call my name; he was simply leaving us to burn. I lunged forward and grabbed his ankle, my nightgown catching fire, but he didn't reach down to save me. He recoiled in horror at the sight of my burning hair and our dead child, kicking me back with a panicked shriek. "Let go!" he shrieked. I died as a massive, flaming timber snapped from the ceiling and crushed us both into silence. I couldn't believe that the man I loved would leave his family to die just to save his own skin, but the rage I felt was colder than the death that followed. But then the burning stopped instantly, replaced by a cold so sharp it made my teeth ache. I gasped, jerking upright in my bed to find the velvet duvet cool under my palms and the nursery quiet, with Emily still breathing softly in her crib. I had returned to the winter morning two years before the fire, the exact day Kenney finalized the deal to sell me to the King for a promotion. As Kenney stepped into the room with a practiced mask of concern, I realized I was no longer the victim of this story. "A nightmare, my love?" he asked, reaching out to touch my shoulder. I flinched away, my eyes burning with a hatred he couldn't yet understand. Tonight was the Winter Masquerade, the night he planned to offer me to the King as a prize, but this time, I was going to turn his social ladder into a gallows.
