Chapter 2

Three days in detention taught me that silence has a texture.

The cell was stone—cold, damp stone that smelled like rust and old fear. The walls were thick enough that I couldn't hear the pack moving above me. No footsteps. No voices. Just the drip of water somewhere in the dark and the sound of my own breathing.

They'd put wolfsbane-laced cuffs on my wrists. Not the heavy kind they used on rogues. These were thin, almost delicate, designed to keep a wolf suppressed without killing her outright. The metal sat right over the brand marks Hannah had left. Every time I moved, the pain spiked fresh.

I didn't move much.

My wolf was still gone. Not dead—I would have felt that, I think—but so far away I couldn't reach her. The space where she used to speak was just empty now. Hollow.

I spent the hours cataloguing.

Access codes. I still had them all memorized. The war room systems, the training algorithms, the allied-pack communication networks I'd built from scratch. Dallas had never bothered to learn them himself. Why would he? I'd always been there to handle it.

Financial channels. My family's money, threaded through Ironveil's accounts in ways that looked like pack revenue but weren't. Seven years of funding. Expansion projects. Warrior salaries. The new pack house wing. All of it traceable back to me if you knew where to look.

Dallas didn't know where to look.

The mind-link crystal was harder. I'd started composing it the first night, working with the memory fragment I'd forced into Marcus's head. Hannah's confession. The kitchen. The brand. Her smile.

It took focus I barely had. The wolfsbane made everything fuzzy at the edges. But I kept working. Shaping the memory. Sealing it. Making it accessible only by Alpha touch—Dallas's touch, specifically.

I wanted him to see it. When I was gone. When it was too late.

On the third night, the cell door opened.

I looked up. The on-duty warrior was young—maybe twenty. I didn't know his name. He stepped back fast when he saw who was behind him.

Everly.

She was wearing her traveling leathers and her twin blades. Her left wrist was swollen—fractured, probably, from whatever she'd done to get past the border patrol. She didn't say anything. Just looked at me. At my wrists. At the torn white dress I was still wearing because no one had bothered to bring me anything else.

Her jaw tightened.

"Guest-right," she said. Her voice was flat. Formal. "Invoked under treaty law, section four, subsection two. You will release her into my custody or I will file a formal challenge with the regional council."

The young warrior looked panicked. "I don't have authority to—"

"Then get someone who does." Everly didn't move. "Now."

He ran.

Everly stepped into the cell. She knelt in front of me and pulled a small silver key from her pocket. It wasn't an Ironveil key. She'd brought her own lockpicks.

The cuffs fell away. The relief was immediate—the wolfsbane pressure lifting just enough that I could breathe properly again.

"Can you walk?" Everly asked.

I nodded. I wasn't sure it was true but I nodded anyway.

She helped me stand. My legs shook. She wrapped an arm around my waist and didn't comment on it.

"We're leaving," she said. "Right now. Before anyone thinks to stop us."

"I need to make a stop first," I said.

She looked at me. "Claire—"

"One stop." My voice came out rougher than I expected. "Then we go."

She studied my face for a long moment. Then she nodded.

The war room was on the third floor of the pack house, behind a reinforced door I'd designed myself. No one was in the corridors. It was late—past midnight. Most of the pack would be asleep.

I used my access code. The door opened.

The room was exactly how I'd left it. Three walls of screens showing territorial maps, training schedules, allied-pack communications. The fourth wall was a weapons rack I'd stocked personally.

I sat down at the main console. My hands were shaking but my fingers remembered the keystrokes.

Lockout protocol: initiated.

Every system I'd ever built for this pack—locked. Access codes scrambled. Administrative privileges revoked. It would take Dallas months to break through the encryption, if he ever managed it at all.

Financial transfer: initiated.

Seven years of my family's money, pulled from Ironveil's accounts in a single transaction. Routed through three neutral banks before landing in an account only I could access.

The screens went dark one by one.

I pulled the mind-link crystal from the small pocket I'd sewn into my dress hem. It was warm. Still holding the memory.

Everly watched from the doorway. She didn't ask questions.

I walked to Dallas's private suite—the Alpha quarters connected to the war room by a corridor only he and I had ever used. The door was unlocked. Of course it was. He'd never had a reason to lock it against me.

The room smelled like him. Cedar and smoke. It made my stomach turn.

I placed the crystal on his desk. Right in the center, where he'd see it first thing.

The crystal caught the moonlight from the window. It looked almost pretty.

I turned and walked out.

Everly handed me a spare cloth as we reached her car. I wrapped it around my wrists. The burns were still raw but the bleeding had stopped.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

She started the engine. "Silvercrest territory. I know someone at the border. They'll let us through."

Silvercrest. Lycan territory.

I leaned back against the seat. My wolf was still silent. My gift was still gone. My wrists still hurt.

But the access codes were wiped. The money was mine. And Dallas would find that crystal in the morning.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in three days, I felt something that wasn't pain.

It wasn't quite satisfaction. Not yet.

But it was close.
