When My Mate Replaced Me With Our Daughter’s Murderer
Chapter 2
The great hall of Ashford Ridge was built from stone that had witnessed centuries. I could feel the weight of it the moment the doors opened — not oppressive, but absolute. The kind of architecture that did not ask for respect. It simply was.
Two guards flanked me as I walked the length of the hall. My boots made no sound on the polished floor. I kept my hands loose at my sides and my spine straight. I had walked four days to get here. I would not arrive on my knees.
At the far end, elevated on a dais of dark granite, sat Kael Ashford.
I had heard descriptions. They were inadequate. He was motionless in the way that apex predators are motionless — not stillness born of calm, but the coiled readiness of something that does not need to prove what it can do. His eyes tracked me across the hall without his head moving. Dark-furred, winter-eyed, and utterly unreadable.
I stopped three meters from the dais. The suppressant I had applied that morning burned faintly under my collarbone, masking the scent markers I could not afford to reveal yet. Not until I had what I came for.
Behind him, a wolf I could not see began to howl. Low. Resonant. The sound rolled through the stone like a shockwave, and every wolf in the hall went still.
Kael's expression did not change. But something in the air shifted.
I pressed two fingers to the inside of my left wrist. My pulse was there. Steady. I could work with steady.
"My name is Karla Donovan," I said. My voice carried in the vast space without effort. "Healer bloodline. Formerly Luna of Silverfang Pack. I am here to request sovereign protection and territory rights."
Silence.
Then Kael leaned forward slightly. Not a gesture of curiosity. A predator adjusting its angle of observation.
"On what grounds?"
His voice was low, deliberate, and carried the kind of authority that did not require an Alpha tone. It simply was.
I met his gaze and did not look away.
"I am offering Healer abilities from a bloodline that held Silverfang's protective wards for two generations. I have knowledge of the Luna Accord and the legal precedent it establishes under Lycan law. And I am carrying physical evidence of a pup-murder by wolfsbane poisoning that was committed inside pack territory while the Alpha used his authority to silence the only witness."
I reached into my coat and withdrew the sealed vial. The glass caught the light. Inside, the wolfsbane extract was faint green, preserved with the techniques my mother had taught me before I understood why I would need them.
I held it up.
"This compound was extracted from the nursery bedding of my six-month-old daughter three days after her death. It matches the refined wolfsbane used in targeted biological attacks. The woman who poisoned her is currently positioned as acting Luna of Silverfang Pack. The Alpha who rejected me to make room for her is the same Alpha who commanded me to silence when I tried to warn him."
I lowered the vial but did not put it away.
"I am not here to beg, Your Majesty. I am here to propose an exchange. My abilities and my evidence, in return for the protection and resources necessary to invoke the Luna Accord before the Lycan Council. If you grant me that, I will bring you a case that Lycan law cannot ignore."
The hall was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.
Kael did not move. But behind him, that unseen wolf — Fenris, I would learn later, his own — howled again. Louder this time. The sound reverberated through the stone, and I felt it in my chest like a second pulse.
Kael's eyes narrowed fractionally.
Then he stood.
The movement was unhurried, but every wolf in the hall straightened. He descended the dais steps and stopped two meters in front of me. Close enough that I could see the exact color of his eyes — pale gray, like winter moonlight on snow.
He studied me for a long moment. I did not flinch. I did not perform strength. I simply stood.
"You arrived here with no pack, no title, and no wolf," he said quietly. "And you are asking me to sanction a tribunal that has not been invoked in living memory, against an Alpha who will call it a personal vendetta."
"Yes."
"Why should I believe your evidence is what you claim it is?"
I held his gaze.
"Because I am a Healer, and Healers do not preserve lies. Because my mother's bloodline held Silverfang's wards for twenty years, and the territory began degrading the week I was cast out. And because the wolfsbane in this vial is not a story I am telling you. It is a fact you can test."
I paused.
"And because your wolf has been howling since the moment I walked into this hall, and you have not told me why."
Something flickered in his expression. Not surprise. Recognition.
He stepped back.
"You will be given quarters in the east wing. You will have access to the Healer resources and the legal archives. My Beta will conduct an independent investigation into your claims. If the evidence substantiates, I will sanction the tribunal."
He turned and walked back toward the dais.
Then he stopped.
"One more thing, Karla Donovan."
I waited.
"The suppressant you are wearing will not work in this hall much longer. Whatever you are hiding beneath it, my wolf already knows."
He did not wait for my response. He ascended the dais, sat, and gestured to the guards.
They escorted me out.
I did not look back. But as the doors closed behind me, I heard Fenris howl one last time.
And for the first time in months, something inside my silent chest answered.
