Chapter 5

She came for me on a Wednesday morning.

I was in the kitchen when she walked in — the pack house kitchen, the one I had spent five years learning. I knew which burner ran hot, which drawer stuck in humid weather, which shelf Aaron never looked at. I had made ten thousand small decisions in this room, and none of them had ever been acknowledged, and I had stopped expecting them to be.

Harlow closed the door behind her.

She didn't rush. She moved to the counter across from me and leaned against it with the easy confidence of someone who has already decided how a conversation ends. Her expression was pleasant. Warm, even. The same warmth she wore in every room where Aaron might walk in.

But Aaron wasn't here.

I kept my hands around my coffee mug and waited.

"You've been very patient," she said. Her voice was different without an audience — the softness gone, something flatter underneath. "Five years. That's a long time to hold a seat for someone."

I didn't answer.

"That's all it was, you know." She tilted her head slightly, studying me the way you study something you're deciding whether to keep. "Your father needed Aaron managed while he built the Blackridge Pack into something worth having. You were the management plan. A warm body with a Luna title to keep him anchored until the pack was stable enough to matter." A small pause. "I want you to understand that I'm not angry with you. You did exactly what you were supposed to do."

My hands tightened around the mug.

"A placeholder," she continued. "That's the word, I think. A placeholder Luna. Your father bought Aaron a responsibility so he wouldn't run, and he bought you a mate so you wouldn't be alone, and everyone got what they needed for five years." She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes. "You should be grateful, honestly. Most she-wolves don't get that kind of arrangement. Most of them just get nothing."

At the threshold, Shadow lifted his head.

He didn't growl. He didn't move. He simply bared his teeth — slow, deliberate, absolute — and held it. The kitchen went very quiet.

Harlow glanced at him. Something shifted in her expression, just briefly. Then she looked back at me.

"I'm collecting what's mine," she said. "I think you already know that. I think you've known it since I walked back through that door." She pushed off the counter and smoothed her sleeve. "The graceful thing would be to stop making it difficult."

She left. The door swung shut behind her.

I stood in the kitchen for a long time. The coffee had gone cold. I could feel the bruise on my forearm from three nights ago — that dull, insistent throb — and I thought about the Stonecrest Luna's hand over mine, and the Rivenmoor elder's careful eyes, and the way the entire banquet hall had gone quiet for three seconds when Aaron pressed his face against Harlow's neck.

Shadow padded to my side and pressed his head against my hip.

I put my hand on him and breathed.

---

I requested the mediation session the following morning.

The elders agreed within the hour. I had expected resistance — Aaron's authority in the pack was absolute, and going around him was not something done lightly. But Elder Marsh's face when I laid out the request told me everything: they had been waiting for someone to say it out loud.

The dinner was formal and tense in the way that formal things are tense when everyone in the room knows what isn't being said. The elders asked about pack succession. They asked about the Luna's administrative continuity. They asked, with the careful precision of people who had been doing this for decades, about my health.

Aaron's jaw was a hard line throughout. He answered in complete sentences. He was perfectly composed. But I could feel the cold fury radiating off him through the bond — that thin, dying thread — like heat off stone in winter. Not warmth. Just temperature.

I answered the elders' questions clearly. I kept my hands folded in my lap and my voice steady and I was, as always, very good at this.

Afterward, walking back to our quarters, Aaron didn't speak. The silence had a shape to it — compressed, pressurized, the kind that builds before something gives.

I closed the door behind us.

He turned around.

"A power play." His voice was quiet. That was always the worst sign — when it went quiet. "That's what that was. Sitting across from the elders and performing the wounded Luna for an audience."

"I cited pack stability," I said. "Succession. The administrative—"

"I know what you cited." He crossed the room slowly, and I held my ground, and he stopped three feet away and looked at me with those flat, cold eyes. "You went around me because you couldn't get what you wanted through me. That's what you do. That's what you've always done."

"Aaron—"

"I'm sleeping in the east wing tonight." He said it the way he said everything — declarative, final, a door closing. "And tomorrow night. I'm done pretending this arrangement requires proximity."

I looked at him. I thought about Harlow's voice in the kitchen. A placeholder Luna. I thought about the photographs on my phone that he had refused to look at. I thought about five years of coffee at the right ratio and clothing tags removed by hand and a pressed flower in a pack ledger that no one else knew about.

"Your scent," he said, and his voice dropped one register further, "makes me sick."

The room went very still.

I felt it through the bond — that faint, guttering thread — the way his wolf recoiled from the words even as his mouth formed them. A flinch. Something involuntary and immediate, like a hand pulling back from a flame. The lie was so complete that it almost held its shape.

Almost.

I looked at him for a long moment. I didn't cry. I had made a rule about that, and I was not ready to break it, and something in me had gone quiet in a way that was different from grief. Quieter than grief. Stiller.

Like a decision that hasn't been named yet but has already been made.

"Goodnight, Aaron," I said.

He left.

I sat on the edge of the bed in the empty room and Shadow came and lay across the doorway, his grey body a warm line between me and the dark corridor, and I looked at my hands in my lap and breathed.

The bond hummed faintly. Exhausted. Fraying at every edge.

I thought about what Harlow had said. I thought about what Aaron had said. I thought about the healer's voice last week, careful and precise: the window is closing, Sophia. I thought about five years of choosing this, again and again, in a hundred small ways that no one ever saw.

I thought about the wolfsbane tincture in the back of the medicine cabinet. The one I had been trying not to think about for three days.

Shadow's amber eyes found mine in the dark.

I looked away first.
