Chapter 4

The Ironclad pack house kitchen smelled like cinnamon and yeast. I stood at the counter, sleeves rolled up, kneading dough beside Mara, an omega she-wolf who'd been working the kitchens for twenty years. Her hands moved with practiced efficiency, folding and pressing the dough into smooth rounds.

"You don't have to do this," Mara said quietly. Her eyes flicked toward me, uncertain. "You're the Alpha's mate. This isn't—"

"I want to," I said. I kept my voice soft, tired. "It helps. Keeps my hands busy."

She nodded slowly, then reached for the flour. "My daughter's coming of age ceremony is next month. She's nervous. Doesn't know if her wolf will be strong."

"What's her name?"

"Lily."

I smiled. "That's a beautiful name. I'm sure her wolf will be perfect. The Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes."

Mara's expression softened. "Thank you. That's kind of you to say."

I worked beside her for another hour, learning the rhythm of the kitchen, the names of the other omegas, the small details Travis never bothered to remember. When I left, Mara squeezed my hand. "You're always welcome here."

I carried that trust like a coin I'd deposit later.

Over the next week, I made myself useful in small, unremarkable ways. I helped the healer's assistant organize medical supplies. I sat with the delta warriors' mates during their evening knitting circle and listened to their complaints about patrol schedules. I remembered birthdays. Asked about children. Smiled when it hurt.

And in return, they told me things.

Travis takes his bourbon at eight sharp. Never misses it.

He keeps his laptop in the top drawer of his desk. Biometric lock. Thumbprint only.

He sleeps heavy after a long day. Doesn't wake easy.

I filed every detail away, building a map of his vulnerabilities one conversation at a time.

The Luna gown fitting was scheduled for a Thursday afternoon at a boutique in the human town twenty minutes south. I arrived fifteen minutes early, told the attendant I wanted to check the dress alone first, and walked toward the private fitting room at the back.

The door was cracked open. I heard the rustle of fabric. Smelled Tiffany's perfume.

I pushed the door wider.

Tiffany stood before the three-paneled mirror, wearing my ceremonial Luna dress. The gown was white silk with intricate lacework along the bodice, designed specifically for my measurements, my role, my future. On her, it hung slightly loose at the waist. She turned slowly, her hands smoothing the fabric, her eyes bright and hungry.

She didn't hear me at first. She was too absorbed in her reflection, in the fantasy she'd built around this moment.

I leaned against the doorframe and waited.

When she finally saw me, her face went white. She froze, hands still pressed to the silk.

"Addison." Her voice cracked. "I was just—"

"Trying it on?" I kept my tone light, almost curious. "It's beautiful, isn't it?"

Footsteps behind me. The other she-wolves from the pack—Travis's Beta's mate, two delta warriors' mates—entered the hallway and stopped when they saw the scene. Their eyes went wide.

I didn't turn around. I kept my gaze on Tiffany, my expression calm, clinical. "That dress was made for the Alpha's mate, Tiffany." I let the words settle. Let the other she-wolves hear them clearly. "But don't worry." I smiled, slow and cold. "The Mate Ceremony will feature a surprise no one in the wolf world will ever forget."

Tiffany's hands trembled. She tried to speak, but nothing came out.

I turned and walked past the other she-wolves, whose whispers started before I reached the front of the boutique. By evening, the entire pack would know. Another crack in the foundation.

Two days later, I forged the first note.

I'd spent a decade receiving letters and texts from Tiffany. I knew her handwriting—the looping 'g,' the way she dotted her 'i's with small circles. I practiced on scrap paper until I could replicate it perfectly. Then I wrote on a torn piece of notebook paper: "We need to talk about what happens if she finds out."

I planted it beneath a stack of pack financial reports on Travis's desk, the corner just visible.

Then I waited.

I was in the library the next afternoon when I heard Travis's voice echo down the hall. "Get in here. Now."

I set down my book and moved quietly toward his office. The door was ajar. I positioned myself just out of sight.

Tiffany's voice, shaking: "Travis, I don't understand—"

"This." The slap of paper on wood. "Explain this."

Silence. Then Tiffany, barely a whisper: "I didn't write that."

"It's your handwriting." His Alpha tone pressed down, heavy and suffocating. "Are you building leverage against me? Is that what this is?"

"No!" Her voice broke. "I swear, I didn't—"

"Then who did?" The air in the room thickened. I heard a soft thud—Tiffany's knees hitting the floor. "Answer me."

She was sobbing now, gasping for air under the weight of his aura. "I don't know. I don't know. Please—"

"If I find out you're lying," Travis said, his voice dropping to that dangerous quiet, "you'll wish the rogues had finished you that day Addison pulled you out of the dirt."

Footsteps. The door swung open. I was already moving, slipping into the stacks before Travis emerged. My hands were steady. My breathing was controlled.

But inside, my wolf was counting down.

Two rats. One cage. And the walls were closing in.
