Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier in Ironvale's main hall cast warm light across the long dining table. I sat in the chair my father had set at his right hand — the same chair I'd occupied as a child, carved oak with moon-phase engravings along the armrests. Around me, allied Alphas and their Lunas filled the room with conversation and laughter. My father's 60th birthday. I'd spent three months arranging this dinner: the menu, the guest list, the seating chart that balanced territorial politics with family warmth.

Jayson's chair sat empty beside me.

I smoothed the napkin in my lap and kept my face pleasant. Composed. A Luna's power is invisible, Mrs. Tucker had told me on the eve of my mating ceremony. The moment it becomes visible, you have already lost.

Alpha Crane from the northern territory raised his glass. "To Jared Mitchell — a wolf who's led Ironvale with honor for three decades, and who raised a daughter any pack would be proud to call Luna."

Glasses lifted. I lifted mine. The wine was a deep red, my father's favorite vintage. Across the table, my father's eyes found mine. He smiled, but something in his gaze was too careful. Too knowing.

"Where's that mate of yours, Madalyn?" Alpha Crane's Luna asked lightly. "I was hoping to catch up with Jayson tonight."

"Rogue activity at Silverfang's eastern border," I said smoothly. "He sends his regrets. You know how it is — pack security doesn't keep a schedule."

She nodded sympathetically. Around the table, other Alphas exchanged brief glances. No one said anything. But I felt the weight of what they weren't saying.

Dinner continued. Roasted venison, herb-crusted potatoes, fresh bread still warm from Ironvale's kitchens. I ate small bites and participated in conversation when required. My father told stories about my childhood — the time I'd tried to organize the pack pups into a formal training regiment at age seven, the summer I'd rewritten Ironvale's alliance contract template and presented it to him with color-coded tabs. Laughter rippled through the hall. I smiled at the right moments.

Midway through the main course, the mind-link hit me.

It wasn't meant for me. That was clear immediately. The image bled through from another warrior's consciousness — a mistake, a slip in mental shielding during a moment of distraction. But it landed in my mind with perfect, brutal clarity.

A lakehouse. Not Silverfang's eastern border. Moonlight on water. Champagne flutes on a wooden deck. Cataleya Romero in a dress I'd never seen, laughing with her head tipped back. And Jayson — my mate, my Alpha, the wolf the Moon Goddess had chosen for me — standing so close to her that no air existed between them. His hand on her waist. His nose grazing the curve of her neck in the exact spot a marking bite would land.

The image lasted three seconds. Maybe less.

I set down my fork carefully. It made no sound against the porcelain.

My wolf, silent for months, stirred. Not in grief. In something colder.

I picked up my wine glass. The crystal stem felt solid in my hand. I raised it slowly, not toward the table, not toward my father or the gathered Alphas. I raised it to myself. A private toast. A farewell.

To the mate bond I'd believed was sacred. To eight years of invisible labor. To the woman who'd made herself small enough to fit inside someone else's vision of power.

I drank.

Across the table, my father's hand stilled on his own glass. His eyes locked on mine. He didn't ask. He didn't need to. Jared Mitchell had been an Alpha for thirty years. He knew what a wolf looked like when something inside her died.

I set the glass down. Smoothed my napkin again. Turned to the Luna on my left and asked about her daughter's upcoming mating ceremony.

The dinner continued around me. Toasts. Dessert. My father's favorite cake, chocolate with raspberry filling, the recipe I'd given to Ironvale's head cook weeks ago. I cut a slice. Took a bite. Tasted nothing.

When the evening finally ended, I hugged my father at the door. He held me longer than usual. His hand rested briefly on the back of my head — the gesture he'd used when I was a child and something had frightened me.

"You're always welcome home, Madalyn," he said quietly.

I pulled back and smiled. "I know, Dad."

I drove back to Silverfang alone. The pack house loomed dark against the night sky when I arrived. Jayson's car wasn't in the driveway. I hadn't expected it to be.

I walked through the front door, past the living room where his scent and Cataleya's had tangled so thoroughly I could barely detect our mate bond anymore, and climbed the stairs to our bedroom.

I didn't sleep.

Instead, I pulled three empty boxes from the storage closet and began packing my personal belongings. My clothes. My books. The framed photograph of my parents on our mating day. The handwritten ledgers I'd kept since Silverfang's founding — my own records, separate from the pack's official accounts.

When the boxes were full, I moved to my small office down the hall. The room Jayson had given me eight years ago, back when he'd still called my work essential. I unlocked the filing cabinet and pulled eight years of financial records. Territory lease agreements. Alliance contract disbursements. Pack infrastructure accounts. Every payment I'd processed, every deal I'd structured, every resource I'd allocated to build Silverfang into one of the Northeast's most powerful packs.

I opened my laptop. Pulled up Cataleya's social media profile.

She'd posted tonight. A photo of champagne flutes against a lakehouse sunset. The caption read: "Celebrating life's beautiful moments. #Blessed #PackLife #MyAlpha."

I scrolled back. Months of posts. Jewelry. Trips. Designer clothes. Every image geotagged. Every gift documented. Every luxury funded by pack resources I'd managed.

I opened a new spreadsheet and began cross-referencing.

By dawn, I had the beginning of something irrefutable.

My wolf stirred again. This time, she didn't whisper. She growled.
