Chapter 2

The training grounds smelled like sweat and earth. I arrived early, as always. The weekly pack training session — my schedule, my design, built six years ago when Silverfang's warrior ranks were half their current size — ran like clockwork because I'd made it clockwork.

Warriors filed onto the field in formation. I stood at the eastern edge, the Luna's traditional observation post, a spot that offered clear sightlines to the entire grounds. The morning sun was warm on my shoulders. My notepad sat in my hand, ready to track attendance and performance notes the way I'd done every week for eight years.

Then Jayson arrived.

Cataleya walked beside him.

Not behind him. Not trailing at a respectful distance the way an unmated she-wolf should around a mated Alpha. Beside him. Her hand brushed his arm as they crossed the field. She laughed at something he said, the sound carrying across the grounds like wind chimes.

They stopped at the eastern edge. My spot.

Jayson's eyes found mine. He nodded once. Perfunctory. The kind of acknowledgment you'd give a pack accountant.

"Madalyn," he said.

"Alpha," I replied.

Cataleya smiled at me. Warm. Friendly. The smile of someone who believed she'd already won and could afford generosity.

I stepped to the side. Not far. Just enough to make space. My wolf snarled inside my chest, but I kept my face smooth. Composed. A Luna's power is invisible.

Jayson moved into the observation post. Cataleya stood at his right hand — the Luna's position — and tilted her head toward him as he began the session's opening remarks. His scent rolled across the field. Honeyed oak and pine, the scent I'd known for eight years, now so saturated with jasmine that my wolf physically recoiled.

I couldn't detect our mate bond anymore.

Around the field, warriors shifted their weight. Delta Marcus glanced between Cataleya and me, his jaw tight. Young Kiera, a newly-ranked Delta I'd personally recommended for promotion last month, stared at the ground. No one said anything. But the silence was loud.

Jayson called the first drill. Warriors moved into formation. I watched from three feet to the left of where I should have been standing, my notepad open, my pen ready. I tracked performance. Noted timing. Observed form. The same work I'd done every week.

No one asked why I wasn't standing beside my mate.

The session ran ninety minutes. Cataleya stayed at Jayson's side the entire time, asking occasional questions in a voice just loud enough for nearby warriors to hear. "Why do they rotate formations like that?" "Is that a new drill?" Jayson answered her patiently, his tone indulgent in a way it hadn't been with me in years.

When the final drill ended and warriors began filing off the field, I closed my notepad and walked toward Gamma Reeves. He stood near the equipment shed, coiling rope with efficient, practiced movements. Reeves had trained under my scheduling for six years. He'd always been respectful. Reliable.

"Gamma," I said.

He turned. "Luna."

"I wanted to discuss the border patrol rotation for the northern perimeter. The current schedule has a four-hour gap between shifts on Tuesday nights. I think we should adjust."

Reeves nodded. "Makes sense. What do you want to do?"

"Move the second shift an hour earlier. Overlap the coverage."

"I can do that." He paused. His gaze flicked past my shoulder — toward where Jayson and Cataleya still stood at the observation post — then returned to me. The hesitation lasted less than a second. But I saw it.

"Thank you, Gamma," I said.

"Of course, Luna."

I walked away. My wolf growled low in my chest. Not at Reeves. At the fact that I'd just watched a warrior who'd followed my orders without question for six years check someone else's position before answering me.

That evening, I added a note to my private ledger. *Gamma Reeves: authority erosion detected. Still respectful, but deference redirecting.*

The next afternoon, Mrs. Tucker summoned me to tea.

The message came through a formal mind-link from her personal aide: *The former Luna requests your presence at three o'clock. The family wing. Do not be late.*

I arrived at 2:55. The Tucker family's private wing occupied the pack house's entire western side — rooms I'd helped renovate five years ago when the former Alpha's health had required accessible quarters. Mrs. Tucker's sitting room was decorated in cream and gold, with oil paintings of past Tucker Alphas lining the walls.

She sat in a high-backed chair near the window, a porcelain tea service arranged on the table beside her. She did not stand when I entered.

"Madalyn," she said. "Sit."

I sat.

She poured tea into two cups. The liquid was amber, fragrant. She handed me one cup, her movements precise and deliberate.

"You seem distant lately," she said.

I sipped my tea. It was too hot. I set it down. "I've been managing the usual pack business."

"Have you." It wasn't a question. She set her own cup down and folded her hands in her lap. "I've received concerns from several pack members. They say you've been... withdrawn. Less present."

"I attend every required function," I said. "I fulfill every Luna duty."

"Do you." Again, not a question. Her gaze was steady. Cold. "Because from where I sit, Madalyn, it looks like you're creating tension. Division. A Luna's power is invisible. The moment it becomes visible, you have already lost."

I'd heard those words before. She'd spoken them to me eight years ago, on the eve of my mating ceremony, when I'd been young and believed they were wisdom.

"I understand," I said.

Mrs. Tucker leaned forward slightly. "I don't think you do. The Tucker bloodline has held the Silverfang Alpha title for three generations. That legacy is built on strength, unity, and discretion. If you cause a scandal — if you damage this family's reputation through some... emotional display — I will personally petition the Lycan Council to strip your Luna title on grounds of abandonment of duty."

She delivered the threat with the calm precision of someone who had framed threats as counsel for thirty years.

I picked up my tea. Took another sip. It had cooled enough to drink now.

"Thank you for your counsel, Mrs. Tucker," I said.

Her eyes narrowed slightly. "You're welcome."

I finished my tea. Set the cup down gently on its saucer. Stood.

"Will there be anything else?" I asked.

"No," she said. "That will be all."

I walked out of the Tucker family wing with absolute certainty about what I was about to do.

That night, I sat at my desk in the small office Jayson had given me eight years ago. The filing cabinet stood open beside me, eight years of financial records spread across the surface. My laptop screen glowed in the darkness.

I pulled up the spreadsheet I'd started the night of my father's birthday. Added three new entries. Cross-referenced account numbers. Documented dates.

By midnight, the case was no longer just beginning.

It was irrefutable.

My wolf stirred. This time, she didn't growl.

She smiled.
