Chapter 2

The doctor who came in wasn't the nurse. He was older, gray at the temples, with the kind of face trained to deliver bad news slowly, like lowering something heavy so it doesn't crash.

"Mrs. Lane." He pulled a rolling stool close to the bed and sat so we were eye level. "I need to talk to you about a child who was brought into our ER earlier tonight."

I already knew. I knew it in my body before he said another word, the way you know a storm has arrived before the first drop hits you, just from the pressure changing in the air.

"A girl," he said. "About four years old. She was brought in unresponsive. We did everything we could. I'm so sorry. We weren't able to revive her."

He kept talking. Something about the description matching intake records, something about a woman who'd dropped her off and left before anyone could get a name, something about how they'd been trying to reach a family member.

I heard maybe half of it.

Inside me, Nessa hit the wall of my ribs like something thrown from a height. One single, catastrophic slam—I felt my sternum ache with it, a physical blow from the inside—and for one heartbeat I thought the sound she made might actually escape my throat, might come out of me as a scream loud enough to bring the ceiling down.

It didn't. It went inward instead, the way a building collapses into its own footprint.

And then Nessa went quiet.

Not the wounded, whimpering quiet from the hall two hours ago. A different kind. The kind that comes after, not before. I reached for her the way I'd reach for a hand in the dark, and there was nothing there to hold. Just a hollow, exactly wolf-shaped, where she used to be.

"Mrs. Lane?" the doctor said. "Do you need a moment?"

"No," I said.

My voice came out even. That surprised some clinical, detached part of me that was still watching from a corner of the ceiling, the part that takes notes even while the rest of you is dying. *Interesting,* it said. *You sound fine.*

"There's paperwork," the doctor said gently. "Whenever you're ready. There's no rush."

"I'm ready now."

He hesitated, then nodded to the nurse, who set a clipboard on the rolling tray and guided it toward me. I took the pen. My hand did not shake. I signed where the little arrows told me to sign, and I read the word *deceased* printed in a box near the top, and I read my daughter's description reduced to a checklist—age, approximate weight, hair color—and I signed again.

Grief was going to come. I understood that the way you understand weather. It was gathering somewhere behind my sternum, enormous, and it was not finished with me yet. But it was not the only thing waiting its turn.

The cramp hit forty minutes later, low and grinding, and I knew what it was before the monitor confirmed it.

The nurses moved fast then. Someone called for the doctor. Someone said *she's miscarrying* in the flat, professional voice people use so the patient doesn't hear the fear underneath it. I lay back against the pillow and let them work, and I watched the ceiling tile with the water stain shaped like a hand, and I thought, with perfect clarity: *Jenna knew this would happen. This is exactly what she wanted.*

The machines beeped and hummed. None of them could read wolf-blood. None of them understood that what was happening to me was not simple bleeding, that the silver was still working through me like a current looking for ground, that a healer of my own kind could have stopped this an hour ago with two fingers and a whispered word. There was no healer here. There was no bond-warmth to buffer any of it. There was only me, and the machines, and the water-stain hand on the ceiling.

I gave myself one breath. One full breath, in through the nose, held, out slow—and in that single breath I let both of them in at once, Chaya and this unnamed second pup, both gone in the same night, both taken by the same silver, both casualties of the same man's silence at the edge of a pool.

Then I folded it. Every bit of it. Down small, down tight, the way you fold a letter you can't afford to read again right now.

When it was over, the doctor came back and sat on the stool again.

"Is there anyone you'd like us to call?" he asked. "Family. A partner."

"No."

He studied me for a moment, and something in his face said he wanted to ask more, and knew better than to try.

"I need a certified copy," I said. "Of the miscarriage report. I want the full chemical analysis included. Whatever your lab found in my bloodwork—the contaminant, the concentration, all of it. In writing, with your signature."

He blinked. "Mrs. Lane, that's—that's not standard practice for—"

"I know it's not standard." I kept my eyes on his. "I still need it."

He left, and came back twenty minutes later with three stapled pages, his own unease still sitting visibly on his shoulders. I read every line. Silver nitrate compound, elevated trace levels, consistent with acute topical and systemic exposure. Precipitating cause of spontaneous termination.

I folded it once, twice, and slid it into the envelope beside the void-ceremony proof. I sealed the flap with my tongue, the way you seal something you never intend to open again except in front of people who can do something with it.

Then I put the envelope inside my jacket, against my skin, over my heart, where it would stay warm from my body the way nothing else was going to warm me for a long time.
