Chapter 2

The Winter Solstice Pack Banquet was supposed to be perfect.

I'd spent the afternoon getting ready. Lucy helped me with my hair, pinning it up in loose waves that framed my face. The dress was a deep emerald green — Hudson's favorite color on me — with a fitted bodice and a skirt that moved when I walked. I looked at myself in the mirror and felt something close to hope.

Tomorrow was the Mate Ceremony. Tonight was the last big event before we made it official. Every pack member would be there. The allied Alphas. The elders. This was our night.

Hudson met me at the entrance to the great hall. He looked good in his formal Alpha blacks, the silver embroidery on his collar catching the light. He offered me his arm without quite meeting my eyes.

"Ready?" he asked.

I took his arm. "Ready."

We walked in together. The hall erupted in applause. Faces turned toward us, smiling. The head table was set with candles and winter flowers. Two chairs sat at the center — the Alpha's seat and the Luna's.

Mine.

Hudson pulled out my chair. I sat down, and he took his place beside me. His hand found mine under the table. I held on.

The first course came. Roasted pheasant with cranberry glaze. Hudson talked to Beta Marcus on his other side about border patrols. I made conversation with Elder Nadia, who sat to my left and asked polite questions about the ceremony preparations.

"Everything's ready," I told her. "The hall's decorated. The flowers are ordered. It's going to be beautiful."

"I'm sure it will be," Nadia said. Her smile was thin. "Hudson's very lucky."

Something in her tone made me pause, but before I could respond, Hudson's hand went rigid in mine.

I turned to look at him. His eyes had gone distant. Unfocused. He was getting a mind-link.

His jaw tightened. Then he stood up.

Just like that. No explanation. No apology.

He dropped my hand and stepped away from the table. Every conversation around us stopped. People stared.

"Hudson?" I said quietly.

He didn't answer. He was already moving toward the side exit, his stride fast and tense. The door swung shut behind him.

I sat there with my hand still raised slightly, frozen in the shape of holding his. The hall was silent for three long seconds.

Then the whispers started.

I lowered my hand slowly. Picked up my fork. Took a bite of pheasant I couldn't taste.

Elder Nadia leaned toward me. "Is everything all right?"

"Fine," I said. My voice came out steady. "Pack business."

She nodded, but her eyes said she didn't believe me.

The second course came. Then the third. Hudson's seat stayed empty. I ate mechanically, smiled when people spoke to me, and felt every single pair of eyes in that hall tracking the vacant chair beside mine.

Beta Marcus tried to cover for him. "The Alpha had an urgent matter to attend to," he announced halfway through the meal. "He sends his apologies."

It didn't help.

I caught fragments of conversation from the tables below. Whispers that weren't quite quiet enough.

"—left her sitting there—"

"—day before the ceremony—"

"—that Turner girl again, I heard—"

I set down my fork. Stood up. Every face in the hall turned toward me.

"Thank you all for coming tonight," I said. My voice carried across the room, clear and controlled. "Please enjoy the rest of the evening."

I walked out before anyone could respond.

The cold air hit me like a slap when I stepped outside. I kept walking. Past the pack house. Past the training grounds. All the way to the boundary ridge where the trees thinned and the territory opened up into empty, frozen fields.

I didn't stop until I was alone.

Then I shifted.

My wolf burst out of me in a rush of silver fur and raw, burning energy. She was bigger than most she-wolves. Faster. She'd always been that way — a hint of something more in her bloodline that no one ever talked about.

She ran.

We tore through the snow, our paws barely touching the ground. The world blurred into white and black and the sharp, clean smell of winter. My wolf didn't grieve. She didn't whimper or slow.

She raged.

Every stride was fury. Every breath was fire. She wanted to turn around. Go back. Find him and make him see what he'd done.

But I held her back. Barely.

We ran until my muscles screamed. Until the trembling stopped. Until the only thing left was cold and exhaustion and a strange, hollow clarity.

When I shifted back, I was kneeling in the snow in my torn dress, shaking but not crying.

I walked back to the pack house in silence.

---

The next three days, I didn't see Hudson.

He was busy, he said through the mind-link. Final preparations. Alpha meetings. He'd see me at the ceremony.

I said nothing.

Instead, I sat in my room with my laptop and opened Adley Turner's social media.

I'd looked at it before, of course. Everyone in the pack had. She posted constantly — training photos, inspirational quotes, carefully lit selfies with captions about her journey to find her dormant wolf.

But I hadn't really looked. Not the way I was looking now.

I scrolled back through months of posts. Studied the backgrounds. The details. The things she wanted people to see and the things she didn't realize she was showing.

That's when I saw the cuff.

It appeared in a photo from six weeks ago. A casual shot of Adley's wrist as she held a coffee cup, captioned something about morning motivation. The cuff was silver, delicate, with an intricate engraved pattern running along the band.

I zoomed in.

My breath stopped.

I knew that engraving style. I'd seen it before on the pendant Hudson gave me for our first anniversary. The jeweler was a specialist — an older wolf who worked in the next territory over. He only did custom commissions. Every piece was one of a kind.

I opened a new tab and pulled up the jeweler's website. Found the contact form. Sent a message with a photo of the cuff.

*Do you recognize this piece? I'm trying to find out when it was made.*

He responded within an hour.

*That's one of mine. Commissioned about two months ago. Pre-mating courtship token. Beautiful work, if I say so myself.*

Two months ago.

Adley had only transferred to Silverfang six weeks ago.

I sat back slowly.

Hudson had sought her out first. Before she ever came here. Before she ever set foot in our territory.

He'd planned this.

I closed the laptop. My hands were steady. My breathing was calm.

Inside me, my wolf was perfectly, dangerously still.

She wasn't grieving anymore.

She was done.
