Chapter 5

I started with maps.

Three packs. That was all it took to keep Ironvale standing—Crestwood in the north, Ridgemoor to the east, and the Hollowbrook Pack whose protection agreement had been renewed every year for eleven years without a single revision. I sat with those three names for two days and did nothing except think.

Then I moved.

Crestwood first. I did not call the Alpha. I sent a courier with a folder—thin, clean, unmarked—containing three documents from the Ironvale bloodline records that did not add up when placed side by side. No accusation. No conclusion. Just the documents, arranged in the order that made the inconsistency impossible to unsee, and a single line at the bottom in my handwriting: *We thought you should have this.*

Eli read the folder before it left the estate. He looked at the arrangement of the documents. He looked at me.

'This is cruel,' he said.

'Yes.'

He handed the folder back. 'The courier leaves in an hour.'

Ridgemoor was easier. I offered them exclusive access to the Blackwood eastern trade corridor for five years, a corridor Ironvale had been leveraging for the last decade. The Ridgemoor Alpha signed within forty-eight hours. I did not have to be present.

Hollowbrook I went to in person.

I wore grey. I brought Eli. I did not raise my voice once in the entire meeting, and I let my wolf sit close enough to the surface that the Hollowbrook Alpha's Beta went quiet halfway through the second sentence and did not speak again. I did not threaten. I asked about their winter grain reserves. I asked about their eldest daughter's mating ceremony. I mentioned, once, that the Blackwood Dynasty had been reviewing its formal recognition of certain older pack charters. The Alpha's throat moved.

We left with a signed agreement that removed Hollowbrook from Ironvale's protection network by the end of the month.

In the car on the way back, Eli watched the road for a long time before he spoke.

'You didn't shift,' he said.

'No.'

'You didn't need to.'

I looked out the window at the winter trees passing. My wolf was quiet in my chest, banked and warm, exactly where I wanted her.

'No,' I said. 'I didn't.'

---

The inter-pack alliance negotiation was held at the Meridian Hall—a neutral estate three hours from Blackwood territory, chosen every year for its diplomatic significance. I had attended these meetings once before, six years ago, seated behind Trevor at the delegate table with no title and no vote.

This time I walked in through the main doors.

Nathaniel walked beside me. Eli walked one step behind on my right, in the position of a Lycan Beta escorting royalty, and the shift in his posture from the private Eli to the public one was so complete I would have missed him if I had not spent two weeks watching him move.

The hall was already full. Delegates from twelve packs. The scent of a dozen different territories layered over each other. I saw Trevor at the far end of the room before he saw me—standing with two of his Betas, his hand at the small of Freya's back, wearing the polished Alpha smile I had watched him practice in mirrors for six years.

Freya saw me first.

I watched her recognize me. I watched the calculation happen behind her eyes—the flicker of assessment, the decision, the way she leaned toward Trevor and murmured something that made him look up. His face did what I expected it to do. Composed itself. He was very good at that. He had always been very good at that.

They crossed the room toward us. I did not move.

Freya's smile arrived a full three seconds before she did—warm, intimate, the exact expression she used to wear when she brought me coffee in my old kitchen. Her voice, when she spoke, was pitched to carry.

'Oh—the poor rejected Luna.' She tilted her head, all mock sympathy. 'I didn't realize they let strays into diplomatic events.'

The hall did not go silent. It went still, which is different. Every delegate within hearing distance stopped moving in the way a herd stops moving when something shifts in the wind.

I did not answer her. I did not have to.

Nathaniel stepped forward.

He did not raise his voice. He did not need to. He simply walked half a pace ahead of me and turned to address the room, and every wolf in the hall turned toward him with the trained attention of a species that knew exactly whose voice that was.

'Before we begin,' he said, warm and unhurried, 'I want to make a formal announcement. It should have been made six years ago. That was my daughter's choice, not mine, and I respected it.' His eyes moved once—briefly, precisely—to Trevor. 'That choice is no longer in effect.'

He reached into his jacket. He produced a small device. I recognized it. Every Alpha in the room recognized it. The Lycan communication relay, the channel that broadcast simultaneously to every pack territory on the continent.

He activated it.

'I am Lycan King Nathaniel Blackwood,' he said, and his voice carried now through every pack house, every estate, every alpha's private receiver from the northern territories to the southern coast. 'I am formally announcing the restoration of my daughter, Charlotte Blackwood, to her position as Lycan Princess and sole heir to the Blackwood Dynasty. She will assume ruling authority over all packs on this continent upon my abdication. This is effective immediately.'

The silence in the hall was total.

I watched Trevor's face. I watched the color leave it in stages—the flush of the room, then the ordinary pallor of a man who had walked into the wrong meeting, and then the specific greyness of an Alpha who was recalculating six years of his life in real time.

Freya's smile was still on her face. She had not caught up yet.

One by one, around the hall, the Alphas dropped their gazes. It was not ceremony. It was reflex—the involuntary submission of dominant wolves recognizing a higher authority in the room. Trevor's head went down last. He fought it. I watched him fight it. His neck moved anyway.

Freya finally understood. Her smile did not fall so much as fracture—the warmth draining out of it in a single visible motion, leaving something underneath that I had never seen her wear in public.

I looked at her.

I held her eyes for three seconds. I did not smile. I did not speak. I simply looked, long enough for her to understand that I was seeing her—all of her, the fabrication and the calculation and the years of intimacy she had spent positioning herself for exactly this reversal—and then I turned back to the negotiation table.

'Shall we continue?' I said.

The delegates moved. Chairs scraped. The meeting began.

I did not look at Trevor again.

---

By the time we returned to the Blackwood estate, the alliance requests had already started arriving.

Sienna met us at the door with a tablet in her hand and an expression that was doing its very best to remain professional.

'Nine packs,' she said. 'Since the broadcast. Formal alliance requests. Two of them were previously aligned with Ironvale.' She glanced at me. 'The Silverfang Pack's own senior Beta has requested a private audience. He wants to discuss—and I quote—*current leadership concerns.*'

I took the tablet.

I scrolled through the names. Packs that had hedged their loyalty for years. Packs that had attended Trevor's rejection ceremony and applauded politely. Packs that had, six years ago, looked past me at pack functions because I had no rank worth acknowledging.

All of them were writing to me now.

Eli stood beside me. He read over my shoulder without pretending he was not doing it, and I let him.

'The Silverfang Beta,' he said quietly. 'That's Trevor's second. If his own second is looking for the door—'

'Trevor's position is no longer stable.'

'No.'

I handed the tablet back to Sienna.

'Accept the alliance requests in the order they came in,' I said. 'Schedule the Silverfang Beta for next week. Not before.' I paused. 'Let him wait.'

Sienna's mouth twitched. 'Understood, Princess.'

The title landed differently in her mouth than it had in Marcus's—less filed, more delighted—and I did not correct her.

I walked past her into the estate. My wolf was warm in my chest, banked and steady, and Eli's footsteps fell into step behind me exactly where they always were.

Upstairs, in the study, Joey's unanswered messages were waiting.

I did not open them.

Not tonight.
