Chapter 4

The boutique on Spring Street smelled like leather and old money. I stood at the counter while the manager counted bills into neat stacks. Forty thousand dollars for the last of my designer bags. The Birkins, the Chanels, the Bottega clutches Colson bought me when he still noticed what I wore.

The manager slid the receipt across the glass. "Pleasure doing business with you, Mrs. Burke."

I folded it once and put it in my coat pocket.

Outside, the street was loud with New Year's Eve energy. People in glitter and faux fur, already drunk at seven. I walked to the window and looked out at the avenue. My reflection stared back—dark coat, bare face, the pearl earrings I'd forgotten to take off.

Then I saw them.

Across the street, half a block down. Colson in his black overcoat. Leighton beside him in something red.

I went very still.

His hands came up to her face. Both of them. Cradling her jaw the way you hold something precious. Her body pressed against his. Above them, the first fireworks from Times Square exploded—gold and white sparks cascading across the Manhattan sky.

He kissed her.

I watched for three seconds. I counted them. One. Two. Three.

Something inside me that I didn't know was still alive went quiet. Not broken. Just done.

I turned from the window. The boutique manager was watching me, her face careful.

"Happy New Year," I said.

I walked out into the cold. The receipt crinkled in my fist. Behind me, the fireworks kept going. I didn't look back.

---

I called Marshall Hess on New Year's Day.

He picked up on the second ring. "Mrs. Burke. Didn't expect to hear from you."

"I need a meeting," I said. "Today."

A pause. Then: "The usual place. Three o'clock."

The club was in Midtown, tucked behind an unmarked door on Fifty-Third. I'd been there twice before, always on Colson's arm. Charity poker nights where the real money changed hands in the back rooms and everyone smiled like they weren't bleeding each other dry.

Marshall met me in the lobby. He was fifty, silver-haired, with the kind of face that gave nothing away. He looked at me for a long moment.

"You alone?"

"Yes."

He nodded once. "Follow me."

We went down a hallway lined with dark wood and low lighting. He opened a door at the end. Inside was a room I'd never seen—leather chairs, a single table, walls lined with ledgers behind glass.

"Sit," he said.

I sat.

He pulled a ledger from the shelf. Leather-bound, heavy. He set it on the table between us and opened it to a marked page.

"Five years ago," he said, "someone placed a wager. The Burke marriage wouldn't last."

I looked at the page. Neat handwriting. Dates. Dollar amounts.

"Who placed it?" I asked.

He smiled slightly. "Anonymous. But the pot's been growing. Other players bought in. Hedge fund managers. Real estate wives. A few board members."

I read the numbers. The pot was seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

My marriage was a line item. Entertainment for people who had everything.

I felt something cold and clarifying settle in my chest.

"What are the terms?" I asked.

Marshall leaned back in his chair. "Divorce finalized within the original five-year window. We're in month fifty-nine. Four weeks left."

"And if someone bets now?"

"Odds are steep. Most players think you'll hold on. You're still wearing the ring." His eyes flicked to my left hand.

I looked down. The diamond caught the light.

I pulled it off. Set it on the table.

"I want to place a bet," I said.

His eyebrows went up. Just slightly. "On?"

"My own divorce. Finalized within thirty days."

The room went very quiet.

Marshall studied me. Then he reached for a calculator. His fingers moved fast. He wrote a number on a slip of paper and slid it across.

The pot, plus odds. One point four million dollars.

"You'd need to put up everything," he said. "Every dollar you've pulled out. The settlements. The liquidations. All of it."

"How much?"

"Four hundred and seventy thousand."

I opened my bag. Took out my phone. Pulled up my banking app and turned the screen toward him.

He looked. Then he looked at me.

"You're serious."

"Completely."

He closed the ledger. Opened a drawer and took out a contract. He filled in the terms by hand, his pen scratching across the paper. When he finished, he turned it toward me.

"Sign here."

I read it once. Then I picked up the pen.

My signature looked exactly like it always had. Neat. Controlled. The name I'd carried for twenty-eight years that had never really been mine.

I set the pen down.

Marshall took the contract. He looked at me with something I'd never seen in a man's face before. Not pity. Not attraction.

Respect.

"I'll be damned," he said quietly.

I stood. Picked up my ring from the table. Dropped it in my coat pocket.

"Happy New Year, Marshall," I said.

I walked out of the club into the January cold. The street was full of people nursing hangovers, carrying coffee, moving through their lives.

I stood on the sidewalk and breathed.

For the first time in six years, the air tasted clean.
