Chapter 2

Zayne came downstairs at seven in the morning and knew immediately that something was wrong.

The house was too quiet.

Not the ordinary quiet of Anna sleeping in or working upstairs in her office. This was the hollow quiet of a space that had been deliberately emptied.

He walked into the kitchen and stopped.

On the counter, arranged in a perfect line: a stack of papers, a gold wedding band, and a small glass perfume bottle.

He picked up the papers first. Divorce petition. Already signed. Anna's signature was neat and unhurried at the bottom of the page.

He set them down and picked up the ring. It was still warm, as if she'd only just taken it off. He turned it over in his palm and felt something tighten in his chest.

The perfume bottle sat beside them both. The one he'd given her for her birthday. The one Poppy had rejected at the boutique.

He stared at the three objects. They looked like an art installation. A museum exhibit on the anatomy of failure.

He pulled out his phone and called Anna.

Voicemail.

He called again.

Voicemail.

He typed a text: *Where are you?*

No response.

He typed another: *Anna, this isn't funny. Call me.*

Nothing.

He scrolled to her location settings. Disabled.

He went upstairs and opened the closet. Half her clothes were still there. Her good winter coat was gone. Her passport was gone. The small leather duffel she used for overnight trips was gone.

He stood in the middle of their bedroom and felt the first edge of real panic.

She was throwing a tantrum. That was all. She'd go stay with a friend for a day or two, make him sweat, then come back so they could talk like adults.

She always came back.

He went downstairs and poured himself a drink.

---

Three days later, Zayne stopped shaving.

He'd called Anna's phone forty-seven times. He'd texted sixty-three messages, ranging from confused to apologetic to furious. He'd driven to her office and been told she was on leave. He'd called her mother, who had said only, "She's safe," and hung up.

No one would tell him where she was.

He sat at the kitchen counter and stared at the divorce papers. They hadn't moved. Neither had the ring. Neither had the perfume.

He'd tried to put them away twice and found he couldn't. Every time he reached for them, his hand stopped.

Poppy had left the day after Anna disappeared. She'd packed her things without a word and taken a car to the airport. She wasn't answering his calls either.

Zayne poured another drink and replayed the last week in his head. The burn. The drive. The phone call. The moment he'd told Anna to get out of the car.

He tried to find the instant where he could have chosen differently.

There wasn't one.

He'd done what made sense. Poppy had been in danger. The house could have burned down. Anna had been fine — upset, yes, but fine. The hospital was right there.

She'd overreacted.

She always overreacted.

He finished the drink and reached for his phone.

Trinity Gibson's number was still in his contacts.

---

Trinity let the phone ring twice before she picked up.

"What."

Zayne leaned forward, elbows on the counter. "I need to talk to Anna."

"No."

"Trinity, I'm her husband—"

"You were her husband," Trinity said. Her voice was flat and cold. "Now you're just a guy who left his pregnant wife on the side of the road in December."

Zayne's jaw tightened. "There was a fire—"

"There was no fire, Zayne." Trinity's tone didn't shift. "Poppy lied. You fell for it. And Anna walked four blocks to the ER with second-degree burns because you chose the nanny over your wife."

Zayne opened his mouth. Closed it.

"You want to know where she is?" Trinity continued. "She's somewhere you can't find her. She's somewhere you can't call her, can't show up at her door, can't send flowers or apology texts or whatever pathetic gesture you're planning next."

"I made a mistake—"

"You made a choice." Trinity's voice sharpened. "You've been making choices for months. The watches. The perfume you regifted her after Poppy said it wasn't good enough. The way you looked at that girl in your own house while your wife pretended not to notice."

Zayne felt his face go hot. "I never—"

"You proposed to Poppy on Instagram, Zayne." Trinity laughed, short and bitter. "You put it on the internet. You thought Anna would see it and come running back, didn't you? You thought she'd be jealous."

He said nothing.

"She blocked you," Trinity said. "She blocked you before you even posted it. She doesn't care, Zayne. She's done."

"Where is she?"

"Somewhere better than here."

"Trinity—"

"You don't get to talk to her. You don't get to know where she is. You don't get anything." Trinity's voice dropped, quiet and final. "You left her on the street. In the snow. Pregnant. Burned. Alone."

Zayne heard the line go dead.

He stared at the phone in his hand.

Then he looked at the counter. The papers. The ring. The perfume.

The still life of everything he'd lost.

And for the first time, he understood that Anna wasn't coming back.
