He smiled, reaching across the table to touch my hand. 'It's perfect for us. A chance to be seen together, at our best. The power couple.'

I felt his fingers on my skin. Once, that touch had made me feel safe. Now it just felt like another performance.

'When?' I asked, my voice steady.

'Three weeks. Saturday night.' His thumb traced circles on my wrist. 'I've already secured our spots. The Hendersons will be there. The Carlisles. Everyone who matters.'

His other hand moved to the back of his neck, fingers rubbing that spot just beneath his collar. The tell. The lie.

'It sounds wonderful,' I said, squeezing his hand. 'We should make an entrance.'

His smile widened. He thought he was winning.

As soon as he went to shower, I texted Julian: 'Event confirmed. Meatpacking District rooftop. Three weeks Saturday.'

Reyes, the investigator, was thorough. By Thursday, he had photos of the venue—a sleek glass structure with panoramic views of the Hudson—and a guest list that read like a who's who of our social circle. Two hundred people, all of them witnesses to the life we'd built together. All of them about to witness its demolition.

But the most damning piece came in an encrypted file that afternoon: a draft of the evening's program. Not a charity event. Not a networking opportunity.

'He's testing the waters,' Julian said when I called him. 'Seeing how people react before he goes public with the truth.'

The Columbia seminar was about corporate ethics—a cruel irony, given my current situation. I sat at a round table with eleven other executives, all of us pretending to care about theoretical moral dilemmas while our real lives were built on compromise and calculation.

'Eden Weaver,' a voice said across the table. 'I've read your paper on supply chain ethics.'

I looked up. A man in his early forties, with the kind of composed attention that made you feel seen rather than scrutinized. His business card, passed across the polished wood, read 'Desmond Ellis, Venture Capitalist.'

'You've read my work,' I said, surprised. That paper had been published three years ago, before our company had reached its current prominence.

'You argued that ethical sourcing isn't just morally right, it's financially sustainable long-term. Most executives were still treating ethics as a PR cost.' His eyes were steady. 'You were ahead of your time.'

Across the room, a mutual colleague approached. 'Desmond, have you met Eden's husband? Keith's quite the charmer. They make a hell of a team.'

Something cold flickered across my face before I could stop it. A micro-expression. A tell.

Desmond's eyes caught it. He didn't react, didn't press. He simply nodded and changed the subject smoothly, as if he hadn't just witnessed the crack in my perfect façade.

When the session ended, he approached me in the hallway. No performance, no practiced charm. Just calm certainty.
