Chapter 3

The back porch light was on when I found them. Drake's hand sat low on Aliyah's waist, thumb hooked into her belt loop like it had done it a thousand times before. I stood behind the kitchen curtain with my phone already up, already recording, and I didn't feel my pulse change at all. That was the strangest part. A year ago this would have flattened me. Now it was just footage.

Later, by the fireplace, they leaned close enough that their foreheads almost touched. I got that too. Eleven seconds, clean audio, Aliyah laughing low and saying something about "when this is finally over."

Upstairs was worse, in a smaller way. I went looking for Cayson before bed and found him alone in the guest room, sitting cross-legged on the cold floor with his crayons, the radiator clanking and doing nothing. Downstairs, Mrs. Cooper and Aliyah were splitting a bottle of Sancerre, laughing about a caterer from someone's wedding. Nobody had checked on him in over an hour.

"Hey, buddy." I crouched down. "You cold?"

He held up a drawing. "I made this for Grandpa."

I took him down myself. Mr. Cooper was in his armchair with the football pregame on mute, and Cayson climbed up beside him and held out the paper — a lopsided house, a sun with too many rays. Mr. Cooper glanced at it for exactly one second before his eyes drifted back to the TV. "Nice, buddy," he said, in the tone you'd use on a stranger's dog.

At breakfast the next morning, Mrs. Cooper was mid-sentence about Aliyah's new earrings — "absolutely stunning, they catch the light so beautifully" — when Cayson knocked his spoon against his bowl, just a kid making kid noise. She turned on him so fast her voice cracked like a slap. "You're being too loud." Then, without missing a beat, back to Aliyah: "Where did you say you found them?"

I didn't say anything. I just pulled out my phone under the table and hit record.

That night, after everyone went up, I found the security panel in the mudroom. The Coopers had never changed the default password — 1234, blinking cheerfully on the little screen, exactly what I'd have bet on from a family that thought their own home was above suspicion. I downloaded three days of footage onto a drive the size of my thumb and slid it into my bag between Cayson's socks.

---

Drake saw the rings at breakfast.

He was mid-bite of toast when his eyes caught the light off my hand, then Lionel's, and he actually laughed — that easy, disbelieving laugh he used when he thought reality was being unreasonable. "Wait. Is that a joke?"

"No," Lionel said. He didn't look up from his coffee. "Scottie is my wife. The divorce was real. You signed it."

Drake's smile flickered but held, the way a man holds a door that's already off its hinges. He set his fork down and reached for my arm, pulling me a few steps toward the hallway, voice pitched low and warm like he was soothing a spooked horse. "Hey. I'm not mad, okay? I get it, you're proving a point. Come home whenever you're done with — whatever this is."

I looked at him. Really looked, the way you look at something you're deciding whether to keep. There was no heat in it. No grief either. Just a flat, clean nothing, and I watched it land on him harder than any scream would have.

I didn't answer. I walked back to the table and sat down next to my son.

---

Mrs. Cooper caught me in the hallway an hour later, her voice pitched for privacy but sharp enough to carve wood. "Ten years," she said, "and this is how you repay this family. Sneaking around, marrying Lionel behind everyone's back, humiliating my son in his own home." She stepped closer. "You were never good enough for this family, Scottie. I don't know why we ever pretended otherwise."

I let her finish. I let every word land, because I wanted her to feel how little it cost me.

"You're right about one thing, Mrs. Cooper." My voice stayed even. "I was never good enough for this family." I paused, just long enough. "I was always too good for it."

Her mouth opened, but nothing came out. I turned and walked up the stairs before she found the words, past the framed family photos where I didn't appear in a single one taken after year three, straight to the guest room where Cayson sat alone again, this time building a tower out of the hotel notepad and a stack of coasters.

"Hey, baby." I scooped him up, his legs wrapping around my waist automatic, familiar. "Let's go find Lionel."

Downstairs, Mrs. Stone looked up from her tea the second we came in, and something in her face — not soft, exactly, but certain — told me she already knew. She patted the couch cushion beside her without a word. Cayson climbed right up, tucked himself against her side like he'd done it a hundred times, and reached for the book she'd left open on the table.

I sat down across from them and finally let my shoulders drop, just an inch. The drive was in my bag. The footage was already backed up twice. Whatever came next, I had exactly what I needed.
