Chapter 1

I was pouring Mae's apple juice when Mitchell walked into the kitchen with that look on his face.

I knew the look. The guilty one. The one he wore when he forgot to pick up dry cleaning, or when he'd been texting someone he didn't want me to see. His jaw was set a little too firm. His eyes landed somewhere near my shoulder instead of my face.

"Syd." He pulled out a barstool and sat down. "I need to talk to you about something."

I set the juice cup on the counter and waited.

"It's Alayna." He said her name carefully, like he'd been practicing. "She's sick. Really sick. The doctors are saying she needs consistent care, a stable environment. She doesn't have family who can take her in, and I—" He paused. "I think she should come stay with us. Just until she's back on her feet."

The kitchen was very quiet. I could hear Mae in the next room, narrating a game to herself in that soft, serious voice she used for her stuffed animals.

I picked up the juice cup. I walked it to the living room doorway, handed it to Mae, watched her take it without looking up from her toys. Then I walked back.

"If she moves in," I said, "we are done."

I said it the way you say something you have already decided. No trembling. No tears. Just the words, clean and final.

Mitchell blinked. Then he smiled. It was a patient smile, the kind he used when he thought I was being unreasonable. "You're being insecure. She has nowhere else to go."

He stood up and walked out of the kitchen before I could say another word.

I stood there for a moment with my hand on the counter. The refrigerator hummed. Mae laughed at something in the other room.

I thought: He's not going to listen.

I thought: He already decided before he sat down.

---

Two days later, Mitchell drove to SeaTac and came back with Alayna Webb.

I was standing in the entryway when they came through the front door. I don't know why I stood there. Maybe I needed to see it with my own eyes.

She was pretty. I'd seen photos — old ones, from before we were married — but in person she was softer somehow, with dark hair that fell across her collarbone and large eyes that shimmered when she looked up at Mitchell. She was holding his arm with both hands. Her steps were small and careful, like walking hurt.

"Sydney." Mitchell's voice was warm in a way it hadn't been with me in months. "This is Alayna. Alayna, this is my wife."

She looked at me. "Thank you so much for having me," she breathed. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I know this is a lot to ask. I'm just so grateful."

She pressed her lips together like she might cry.

Mitchell touched the small of her back to steady her.

I watched his hand rest there, easy and familiar, and I felt something in my chest go very still.

He stepped away to carry her bags upstairs. The second he turned the corner, Alayna's eyes moved.

She didn't look fragile anymore. Her gaze traveled slowly across the entryway, into the living room, up the staircase, cataloguing everything. The original art on the walls. The custom shelving I'd spent two months sourcing. The framed photos of Mae on the side table. Her expression was cool and precise, like a woman taking inventory of something she intended to own.

Then Mitchell's footsteps came back down the hall, and the wounded look slid back into place like a mask.

---

That same evening, he told us Alayna needed Mae's playroom.

I had painted that room myself. Three weekends. Gold stars on the ceiling, fairy lights along the baseboards, a mural of a little girl reading under a tree on the far wall. Mae had helped me pick every color.

Mae started crying. Not loudly — she never cried loudly — just these small, quiet tears sliding down her face while she stared at the door to her room.

Mitchell crouched down to her level. I thought he was going to hold her. Instead he said, "You're old enough to sleep on the pullout sofa. Sharing is a virtue, sweetheart."

Then he looked up at me. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be. You're teaching her to be selfish."

By nightfall, Mae's crayon drawings had been peeled from the walls.

---

That night I lay beside Mitchell in the dark and listened to him breathe himself to sleep.

I stared at the ceiling. I thought about his hand on Alayna's back. The softness in his face when he looked at her. The way he hadn't touched me like that in so long I couldn't name when it stopped.

I didn't cry. I noticed that about myself — the absence of tears.

Instead, something cool and quiet settled into my chest. Heavy. Certain.

Like a stone dropping into still water.

Like a decision already made.
