Chapter 2

The surgical waiting room at dawn smells like disinfectant and fear. I'd been in that smell for sixteen hours straight, but this time it was different. This time I wasn't wearing scrubs.

Dr. Okafor found me at 5:47 AM, still in yesterday's clothes. She pulled down her surgical mask and the exhaustion in her eyes told me everything before her mouth opened.

'He's stable,' she said. 'Triple bypass. Clean work. He'll need monitoring, but the prognosis is good.'

I nodded once. My hands were steady.

Serena studied my face with the particular intensity of someone who'd known me since residency, who'd been there the night I met Caleb at a hospital fundraiser and thought I'd found something real. 'Noelle—'

'Can I see him?'

She hesitated, then stepped aside.

My father's recovery room was quiet except for the rhythmic beep of monitors. The machines tracked his heartbeat, his oxygen levels, his blood pressure—all the numbers that confirmed he was still here. Still alive. No thanks to the man I'd married.

Amos Pierce looked smaller in the hospital bed, but his grip was still strong when I took his hand. His eyes opened, groggy but lucid.

He didn't say anything. Neither did I.

He squeezed my hand once. I squeezed back. That was enough.

I stayed exactly twelve minutes. Then I stood, smoothed my wrinkled shirt, and walked out before the man who'd hung up on my father's emergency could wake up and pretend to care.

The apartment was exactly as I'd left it. Caleb sprawled across our bed, one arm flung over his eyes, his phone face-up on the pillow beside him. Violette's Instagram was still open. A photo of her in a white silk robe, captioned 'Pre-show rituals ✨' with a string of heart emojis. Posted four hours ago. Liked by Caleb three hours ago, while my father was on an operating table.

I pressed my thumb against my ring finger and felt nothing at all.

I made coffee. Black, no exceptions.

Caleb shuffled into the kitchen at 9:30, hair rumpled, wearing the T-shirt I'd bought him two Christmases ago back when I still believed in small gestures. He poured himself coffee without asking how my night was.

'So,' he said, scrolling through his phone with one hand, 'I locked in the front-row seats. Dominic Hale's show tonight. Violette's closing. It's going to be insane.'

I sipped my coffee. 'Sounds exciting.'

'Yeah.' He finally looked up, a small frown creasing his forehead like he'd just remembered I existed. 'It's invite-only. Very exclusive. You understand.'

I set down my cup carefully. 'Am I invited?'

He laughed. Actually laughed. The sound was sharp and dismissive, the auditory equivalent of a door slamming in my face.

'Noelle, come on. It's not your scene.' He returned his attention to his phone. 'You'd be bored out of your mind. And honestly? You'd embarrass me in front of people who actually matter.'

I stirred my coffee even though there was nothing to stir. The spoon made a soft clink against the ceramic.

'You're probably right,' I said.

I smiled. The same mild smile I'd been wearing for years. Unremarkable. Forgettable. Wallpaper.

He didn't notice it didn't reach my eyes. He never did.

'Glad you get it,' he said, already walking away. 'I'll be out all day. Violette needs help with her pre-show prep.'

The door closed behind him at 9:47 AM.

I finished my coffee in silence.

Then I opened my laptop.

Caleb's black card—the one he used to fund Violette's lifestyle, the one he'd never bothered to hide from me because he assumed I was too boring to care—had a spending limit of fifty thousand dollars. I'd never touched it. Not once in three years.

Today, I made an exception.

The first call went to a specialty livestock transport company in Queens. The woman who answered sounded surprised when I specified the breed, the quantity, and the delivery timeline.

'Ma'am, that's a lot of pigs for a same-day order.'

'I'm aware,' I said. 'Can you do it?'

'For that price? Absolutely.'

The second call went to a temporary holding facility. The third went to a logistics contractor—a man named Eddie whose mother I'd operated on eighteen months ago, removing a benign tumor from her frontal lobe. He'd cried in my office afterward and said if I ever needed anything, anything at all, I should call.

I called.

'Dr. Pierce?' His voice was warm, surprised. 'What can I do for you?'

I told him exactly what I needed. Backstage access. Coordinated timing. Discretion.

There was a pause. Then he started laughing.

'Doc, I don't know what you're planning, but I'm in. Consider it done.'

The total charge to Caleb's black card: $14,200.

The line item read: Event Production Services.

I closed the laptop and poured myself another cup of coffee.

My hands were steady. A surgeon's hands.

And tonight, I was going to cut clean.
