Chapter 4

I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop open and a stack of bank statements spread out in front of me. It was two in the morning. The house was silent. Layton was asleep upstairs. Brooks's door was closed.

I'd been at this for three hours.

The quitclaim deed had given me the date. April fourteenth. I searched our joint account for transactions around that time. Nothing. I checked Layton's personal account—the one he thought I didn't know about. The one he'd opened two years ago for "professional expenses."

There it was. April sixteenth. A deposit. Two hundred ninety-seven thousand dollars.

I stared at the number. My cabin. My mother's lifeline. Sitting in his private account.

I scrolled down. Two days later, the money moved again. A wire transfer. I clicked on the transaction details. The recipient was listed as Manhattan Presbyterian Hospital. Oncology billing department.

My hands went cold.

I opened a new tab and searched the hospital's patient portal. I didn't have login credentials, but I didn't need them. I pulled up Viviana's Instagram again. Scrolled back six months. There—a photo of her holding her mother's hand in a hospital room. The caption read: *Stronger together.* The location tag said Manhattan Presbyterian.

I cross-referenced the date with Layton's bank transfer. They matched.

He'd paid for her mother's treatment. With my money. While my mother was dying.

I sat back in my chair. The kitchen light buzzed overhead. My chest felt tight. Too tight. Like my ribs were shrinking.

I thought about my mother lying in that county hospital bed. The fluorescent lights. The peeling linoleum. The nurse who apologized because they were short-staffed.

I thought about Viviana's mother. In a private room. With a view. With experimental treatments that cost more than most people made in five years.

Layton had chosen. He'd looked at two dying women and decided which one deserved to live.

And it wasn't mine.

I closed the laptop. I didn't cry. I just sat there in the dark, staring at nothing.

Viviana started wearing my perfume.

I noticed it the first time I picked Brooks up from her apartment. She opened the door and the scent hit me immediately. Chanel No. 5. The same bottle I'd worn for twelve years. The same one Layton used to say reminded him of the night we met.

But she wore it wrong. Too much. Too heavy. It filled the hallway like a cloud.

"Hi, Mrs. Armstrong," she said brightly. She stepped aside to let Brooks pass. He didn't say goodbye to me. Just grabbed his backpack and headed for the car.

I looked at her. She smiled. Sweet. Innocent. Her eyes weren't.

"Nice perfume," I said.

Her smile widened. "Thank you. It's a classic, isn't it?"

I didn't answer. I turned and followed my son.

In the car, I rolled down the windows. Brooks glanced at me. "It's cold."

"I need air," I said.

That night, I checked her Instagram. She'd posted a new photo. A close-up of a coffee cup on a wooden table. In the background, barely visible, was a man's hand. A wedding ring glinted on his finger. The watch on his wrist was Layton's. I recognized the scratched crystal face.

The caption read: *Little moments.*

I scrolled further. Another photo from three days ago. A notepad with handwriting I knew by heart. Layton's cramped, slanted script. The words were too blurry to read, but the pen lying next to it was the silver one I'd given him for his fortieth birthday.

She was cataloging him. Piece by piece. Claiming him in public while I sat at home folding his laundry.

I put my phone down. My hands were steady. I felt nothing. Just a cold, hollow space where anger should've been.

I drove to the hospital the next day.

My mother was in a shared room on the fourth floor. The woman in the bed next to hers had the TV on too loud. A game show. Canned laughter echoed off the walls.

Mom was asleep when I walked in. Her face was gray. Her cheekbones stood out too sharp. The IV line in her arm was taped down with gauze that had yellowed at the edges.

I sat in the plastic chair next to her bed and waited.

She opened her eyes ten minutes later. It took her a moment to focus. Then she smiled. Weak but real.

"Amelia," she whispered.

"Hi, Mom." I took her hand. It felt like paper. Thin and dry and fragile.

"You didn't have to come."

"I wanted to."

She squeezed my fingers. Barely any strength left. "How's Brooks?"

"He's good. Growing."

"And Layton?"

I hesitated. She saw it. Her eyes sharpened.

"He's busy," I said.

She was quiet for a long time. Then she said, "He never really saw you, did he?"

My throat closed. I tried to smile. "Mom—"

"I should've said something." Her voice cracked. "Years ago. I should've told you to run."

"It's okay." I smoothed her hair back. It was thin now. Brittle. "Everything's going to be fine."

She looked at me. Her eyes were wet. "Don't lie to me, sweetheart."

I couldn't answer. I just held her hand and listened to the game show and the beeping machines and the sound of her breathing.

When visiting hours ended, I kissed her forehead and promised I'd come back tomorrow.

She nodded. But we both knew what tomorrow meant now.

I walked to the parking garage. Got in my car. Locked the doors.

And then I broke.

I cried so hard I couldn't breathe. My chest heaved. My hands shook. I pressed my palms against my eyes until I saw stars.

I cried for my mother. For the cabin I'd lost. For the money that could've saved her. For the twelve years I'd spent shrinking myself into nothing.

I cried until my throat was raw and my face was swollen and there was nothing left.

Then I wiped my eyes. Fixed my hair in the rearview mirror. Put on my seatbelt.

And I drove home to make dinner for the man who'd let my mother die.
