Chapter 2

I pulled into the school parking lot at four-fifteen. Brooks's soccer practice ended at four. I was early. I sat in the car and watched the field through the windshield.

The field was empty.

No kids. No coach. No net bags full of soccer balls. Just grass and white lines and the metal bleachers gleaming in the late sun.

My chest tightened. I grabbed my phone and called Layton.

He picked up on the third ring. "Yeah?"

"Where's Brooks?"

"With a friend." His voice was distracted. I heard papers rustling in the background.

"What friend?"

"Viviana offered to pick him up. They're at her place. I'm heading over there now."

My hand went cold around the phone. "You didn't tell me."

"I'm telling you now." He paused. "Amelia, I have to go. I'll bring him home later."

The line went dead.

I sat there staring at the empty field. Then I opened my phone and pulled up Viviana's Instagram. She'd posted a photo twenty minutes ago. A blurry shot of takeout containers on a coffee table. The caption read: *Best study break ever.*

I zoomed in. The edge of a small sneaker was visible in the corner. Brooks's sneaker. I recognized the blue stripe.

I put the address into my GPS. It took me fifteen minutes to get there. Downtown. A new building with floor-to-ceiling windows and a doorman who nodded at me like I belonged.

I didn't go inside. I stood on the sidewalk and looked up.

Third floor. Corner unit. The lights were on. Through the window, I saw them.

Brooks sat on a gray couch, legs tucked under him, laughing. Viviana sat next to him, gesturing with her hands, her face animated. Layton leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed, smiling. He looked relaxed. Happy.

They looked like a family.

I stood there in the cold, hands shoved in my pockets, watching my husband and my son exist in a world I wasn't part of.

Viviana said something and Brooks laughed harder, throwing his head back. Layton grinned and shook his head. No one looked toward the window. No one saw me.

I turned and walked back to my car.

I didn't cry. I just drove home and sat in the driveway until the streetlights came on.

Layton brought Brooks home at eight-thirty. I was in the kitchen, wiping down counters that were already clean.

"Hey," Layton said. He set his keys on the table. Brooks brushed past me without a word and headed upstairs.

"How was practice?" I asked.

Layton frowned. "He didn't have practice. I told you. He was with Viviana."

"Right." I folded the dish towel. "Next time, tell me before you change the plan."

He sighed. "It wasn't a big deal, Amelia."

I looked at him. He looked tired. Impatient. Like I was the inconvenience.

"Okay," I said.

He went upstairs. I stayed in the kitchen until the house went quiet.

The next afternoon, I picked Brooks up from school. He slid into the passenger seat and put his earbuds in immediately.

"How was your day?" I asked.

He shrugged.

"Did you finish your science project?"

Another shrug.

I tried again. "Do you want to stop for ice cream?"

He pulled one earbud out and looked at me. His face was flat. Bored. "Why can't you be smart like Viviana?"

I blinked. "What?"

"She actually went to college." He said it like it was obvious. Like it was something I should've thought of myself. "She knows stuff. You just… stay home."

My hands tightened on the steering wheel. My knuckles went white. I felt the rubber grip press into my palms.

I didn't say anything. I couldn't. My throat had closed.

Brooks put his earbud back in and stared out the window.

I drove home in silence. The only sound was the hum of the engine and the faint tinny beat leaking from his earbuds.

When we pulled into the driveway, he got out without looking at me and disappeared into the house.

I sat in the car for a long time. My hands were still gripping the wheel.

Over the next two weeks, Viviana was everywhere.

She showed up at Brooks's school talent show with a gift bag full of expensive art supplies. She sat in the front row, clapping louder than anyone else. Afterward, she took a selfie with Brooks and posted it. The caption read: *So proud of this kiddo.*

I was standing ten feet away. No one asked me to be in the photo.

She took him to an arcade on Saturday. Layton went with them. I found out when Brooks came home with a new game console I couldn't afford.

"Viviana got it for me," he said, eyes glued to the screen. "She's cool."

I made dinner that night. Chicken, roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes. Brooks pushed it around his plate and said he wasn't hungry. He'd already eaten. Viviana had bought him a burger.

Layton barely touched his food either. He was on his phone, texting. I saw the name at the top of the screen before he tilted it away.

Viviana.

I cleared the table in silence. I scraped the untouched food into the trash and washed the dishes. My hands moved automatically. Soap. Water. Rinse. Repeat.

When I turned around, the kitchen was empty. Upstairs, I heard Brooks laughing at something on his new console.

I dried my hands and stood there, staring at the clean counters, the empty table, the perfect kitchen no one noticed.

I thought about the woman in the window. The one with the young face and the easy laugh. The one my son thought was smart. The one my husband leaned toward like she was the sun.

I thought about the birthday cake I'd baked myself. Still sitting in the fridge, untouched.

I thought about twelve years. Twelve years of cooking and cleaning and waiting and shrinking.

And I realized something.

I was already gone. They just hadn't noticed yet.
