Chapter 3

The rain started just after midnight. I heard it tapping against the hospital window, soft at first, then harder. By morning it was a downpour.

They discharged me at noon. Stevens was waiting in the circular drive with the car. He didn't ask how I felt. He opened the door, and I got in.

The mansion was quiet when we arrived. Brayden was at the office. Daniella was somewhere upstairs with the boy. I went to my room and locked the door.

I stood in front of the mirror. The bruise on my cheek had turned purple-black. My ribs ached when I breathed. I looked at my reflection and felt nothing.

That was new. The numbness.

I opened my closet and pulled out the long wool coat I hadn't worn since last winter. Heavy. Dark gray. The kind of thing you forgot you owned. I ran my hand along the lining until I felt the small tear I'd made months ago, back when I still thought I might need an escape route.

I pulled out the burner phone. It was cheap. Untraceable. I'd bought it with cash at a bodega in Queens.

I sat on the edge of the bed and turned it on. The screen glowed in the dim room.

For a long time, I just stared at it.

Then I opened a new message and typed: *I need to know you're still there.*

I sent it to the number I'd memorized fifteen years ago. The one I'd never deleted from my memory even after I deleted it from every phone I'd ever owned.

Luciano's number.

I set the phone down and waited.

Two minutes passed. Three.

Then it buzzed.

*Always.*

I read the word five times. Six. I felt something crack in my chest, small and sharp, like ice breaking.

I turned the phone off and hid it back in the coat lining.

Then I went downstairs to make dinner.

The days blurred together after that. I smiled when Brayden told me to smile. I attended his meetings. I stood beside him at events and let photographers take pictures of us looking perfect.

At night, I used the burner phone. I reached out to Marcus Webb first. He was Collins Enterprises' quietest board member. A lawyer. Sixty-two. He'd voted against Brayden twice in the last year and gotten shouted down both times.

I sent him a single document. A contract Brayden had signed with a shell company in the Caymans. Illegal. Traceable. Damning.

Marcus replied three hours later: *I'm listening.*

I sent another document to Helena Voss. She was old money. A shareholder since before Brayden's father died. She'd looked at me with something like pity at the last gala.

She called me from a blocked number the next day. Her voice was clipped. Efficient. "How many more do you have?"

"Enough," I said.

"Good," she said. "Let's talk."

I built it piece by piece. Quiet. Careful. I didn't rush.

Brayden didn't notice. He was too busy with Daniella. Too busy managing his empire. Too busy believing I was broken.

Three weeks after I left the hospital, he came home in a foul mood. A supplier had missed a deadline. He blamed me for not handling it while I was in Miami.

I was in the kitchen when he found me. He didn't say anything. He just grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the door.

"We're going out," he said.

I didn't ask where. I knew better.

He pulled me through the foyer, out the front door, down the marble steps. It was raining again. Cold and hard. The kind of rain that soaked through clothes in seconds.

He didn't stop. He dragged me down the sidewalk. My heels slipped on the wet pavement. I stumbled, and he yanked me forward. My knees hit the ground. Pain shot through my legs.

"Get up," he said.

I got up. He kept walking. Kept pulling.

People passed us. A woman with an umbrella. A man walking his dog. They looked. Then they looked away.

My knees were bleeding. The rain washed the blood down my shins. My dress clung to my body. My hair stuck to my face.

Brayden stopped at the corner. He turned to me. His face was calm. Almost bored.

"You embarrassed me," he said quietly. "In front of the Ortegas. In front of my people. You think I'll forget that?"

I didn't answer. I stood there in the rain and looked at him.

He let go of my arm. "Go home," he said. "Clean yourself up. We have the Brennan funeral tonight."

Then he walked away.

I stood on the corner for a long time. The rain kept falling. My knees kept bleeding.

Then I walked home.

That night, at the funeral reception, I tried to approach Helena Voss. She was standing by the bar. Alone. It was the perfect moment.

I took three steps toward her.

Brayden's hand closed around my wrist.

"Sit down," he said.

He guided me to a chair in the corner. Firm. Controlled. His enforcers appeared on either side of me.

Garrett pulled a small bottle from his jacket. He opened it and handed Brayden a pill.

Brayden held it out to me. "Take it."

I looked at the pill. Then at him.

"Take it," he said again. His voice was soft. Dangerous.

I took the pill. I put it in my mouth. I swallowed.

Garrett handed me a glass of water. I drank.

Brayden smiled. He turned to the room and raised his voice slightly. "She's fine. Just her anxiety medication. She gets overwhelmed at these things."

A few people nodded. Sympathetic. Understanding.

I felt the pill start to work. My limbs went heavy. My vision blurred.

Brayden leaned down and whispered in my ear. "Behave."

Then he walked away.

I sat in the chair and watched the room tilt. People moved in slow motion. Their voices sounded far away.

I couldn't move. Couldn't speak.

I sat there until the reception ended.

Stevens drove me home. He carried me upstairs. He put me in bed.

I lay there in the dark and waited for the drug to wear off.

When it finally did, I reached for the burner phone.

I typed a message to Luciano: *I need more time. But I'm coming.*

His reply came immediately: *I'll be ready.*

I turned off the phone. I closed my eyes.

I wasn't broken.

I was planning.
