When My Husband Chose My Half-Sister Over Our Baby

Three weeks of secret planning: a first-edition Hemingway, candlelight in the penthouse, chilled Bordeaux, black silk from Paris. At seven she texted Elias to hurry home. He claimed he was running late. She waited while candles guttered and wine turned warm, checking her phone like a fool. Then the photos arrived. Her husband, smiling beside her half-sister, his hand resting on the woman's belly—celebrating the pregnancy he swore he never wanted with her. Their anniversary. Her baby. One night shattered every promise.

Chapter 3

I hired a private investigator on a Tuesday.

His name was Vincent Chen. He worked out of a cramped office in Midtown with peeling wallpaper and a coffee maker that looked older than me. He didn't ask why I needed the information. He just took the retainer check and told me to give him two weeks.

I gave him Lacey's full name. Her mother's name. The brownstone address. Her social media handles.

"Everything you can find," I said. "Money. Work history. Relationships. Everything."

He nodded. "You'll have it."

I walked out into the cold afternoon and felt something settle in my chest. Not peace. Just the absence of drowning.

Those two weeks were the longest of my life.

Elias kept leaving. Kept going to her. Every night, a new text. A new emergency. A new reason she needed him.

I stopped responding. I stopped asking where he was going. I just watched him put on his coat and walk out the door.

I added every instance to my file.

By the time Vincent called me back, I had twenty-three entries.

I met him at a diner near his office. He slid a manila folder across the table. It was thick. Heavy.

"She's in deep," he said. "Two hundred fourteen thousand in debt. Spread across four different lenders."

I opened the folder.

The first page was a loan agreement. Lacey's signature at the bottom. The interest rate made my stomach turn.

The second page was a bank statement. Negative balances highlighted in yellow.

The third page was a text exchange between Lacey and someone named Derek Holt. The timestamps went back six months.

*I can't pay this month. Please. Just give me more time.*

*Time costs money, sweetheart. You know that.*

*I'm working on it. I swear.*

*Work faster.*

I flipped through more pages. A failed business registration for something called "LaceyCurates." Sponsored post contracts with brands that had sued her for fraud. Credit card statements showing cash advances and wire transfers to offshore accounts.

And then, near the back, a printed screenshot of a text Lacey sent to someone named Jenna.

*Found him. CEO. Married. Savior type. This is going to work.*

I stared at the words.

Vincent leaned back in his seat. "She did her homework on your husband. Knew his patterns. Knew his weak spots. This wasn't random."

I closed the folder. My hands didn't shake. My voice didn't crack.

"Thank you," I said.

I drove straight to Elias's office.

I didn't call ahead. I walked past his assistant without stopping. She called after me, but I was already pushing open his door.

Elias looked up from his computer. "Dalia—"

I dropped the folder on his desk. Papers slid across the polished wood.

"Read it," I said.

He frowned. "What is this?"

"Everything you need to know about Lacey Cunningham."

He opened the folder slowly. His eyes scanned the first page. Then the second. I watched his face. Waited for the moment it would change. Waited for realization to break through.

It didn't come.

He flipped through a few more pages. Then he closed the folder and pushed it back toward me.

"Where did you get this?" he asked.

"A private investigator."

"You hired someone to dig into her life?"

"Yes."

His jaw tightened. "Do you hear yourself? Do you understand how paranoid this sounds?"

"Elias, she owes over two hundred thousand dollars. She targeted you. This was planned."

"She came to me for help because she had nowhere else to go."

"She came to you because you're rich and easy to manipulate."

He stood up. His chair rolled back and hit the wall. "You're persecuting a helpless girl because you can't handle your own pain."

I stepped closer. "Look at the evidence."

"I won't be part of this."

"She is using you."

"You're obsessed, Dalia. You need help."

I heard a soft sound behind me. A sniffle.

I turned.

Lacey stood in the doorway. Her eyes were red. Her hands twisted together.

"I heard shouting," she whispered. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay, Elias."

Something inside me snapped.

I grabbed the coffee cup from Elias's desk. It was still hot. Still full. I turned and threw it.

The liquid arced through the air. It hit Lacey square in the face.

She screamed. Her hands flew to her cheek. Coffee dripped down her neck, soaked into her white blouse.

Elias lunged past me. He grabbed her shoulders. "Are you okay? Let me see—"

She sobbed into his chest.

I stood in the center of the office. My chest heaved. My hands were empty.

Elias looked at me over Lacey's head. His face was twisted with something I'd never seen before.

Disgust.

"Get out," he said.

I didn't move.

"Get out, Dalia."

I looked at him. At this man I married. At this stranger.

"I want a divorce," I said.

The words came out clear. Steady.

Lacey's sobbing stopped. Just for a second. Then it started again, louder.

Elias held her tighter.

I turned and walked out.

I didn't look back.
