When My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Son Chapter 1

The penthouse glittered like a jewelry box. String lights wrapped the terrace railings. Champagne flutes caught the light from the skyline. I moved through the crowd with a smile I'd practiced in mirrors for seven years—warm, effortless, the smile of a woman who had everything.

Marcelo had texted an hour ago. Last-minute appearance. Times Square concert. PR couldn't say no. I'd read it twice, then set the phone down and greeted the next guest.

Leo was asleep upstairs in his dinosaur pajamas. I'd checked on him twice already, kissing his forehead, smoothing the blankets he always kicked off. Five years old and he already slept like his father—sprawled across the mattress like he owned it.

I was refilling the ice bucket when my phone lit up on the counter.

TMZ Alert: EXCLUSIVE—Marcelo Castillo Caught Kissing Co-Star Backstage at NYE Concert.

The room didn't stop. The jazz kept playing. Someone laughed near the window. I picked up the phone with steady hands and opened the link.

The photos were sharp. Professional-grade paparazzi work. Marcelo's hand cupped around Keyla Watkins' jaw. Her fingers twisted in his shirt. The angle caught everything—his mouth on hers, her body pressed against the wall, the backstage pass hanging crooked around her neck.

I scrolled. There were six photos. Different angles. A timeline. This wasn't a moment. This was a session.

I looked up. The TV above the bar had switched to entertainment news. The same photos filled the screen. A guest glanced at it, then at me. Her smile faltered. She looked away fast, like she'd seen something obscene.

I set the phone facedown on the marble.

For seven years, I had spun stories. Planted corrections. Called editors at three in the morning. Turned scandals into misunderstandings and misunderstandings into charm. I had built Marcelo Castillo from a nobody with good cheekbones into a name that opened doors.

I was so tired.

I walked to Leo's room and stood in the doorway. He was curled on his side, clutching the stuffed triceratops I'd bought him at the Natural History Museum. His breathing was soft and even. The nightlight painted blue shadows across his face.

I sat on the edge of his bed and ran my hand over his hair. He stirred but didn't wake.

"The new year's going to be wonderful," I whispered. "I promise."

Then I went to the master bedroom and pulled two suitcases from the closet.

I packed methodically. The way I used to organize Marcelo's press schedules. Clothes folded in tight squares. Toiletries in a clear bag. Leo's favorite books and toys in the smaller suitcase. I didn't cry. I didn't pause. I moved like I was checking items off a list.

When the guests finally left, I didn't see them out.

By dawn, Leo and I were in the backseat of a town car heading south through empty Manhattan streets. He was still half-asleep, leaning against my shoulder with Blue tucked under his arm. The driver didn't ask questions. I'd used this service for years. He knew when to stay quiet.

I pulled out my phone and called my father.

He answered on the first ring. His voice was alert. He'd been awake.

"Dad," I said. "I'm coming home."

There was a pause. Not hesitation. Just space.

"The door's open," he said.

When we pulled up to the Gramercy Park townhouse, the lights were on. My father stood on the front steps in his robe and slippers, hands in his pockets. He looked older than I remembered. Or maybe I just hadn't looked closely in a long time.

I got out of the car. Leo stirred and blinked up at me.

"Where are we?" he mumbled.

"Grandpa's house," I said.

My father came down the steps and lifted Leo from my arms without a word. Leo's head dropped onto his shoulder. My father's hand came up to cradle the back of his head, and I had to look away.

Inside, my mother was waiting at the kitchen table. She'd already made coffee. A yellow legal pad sat in front of her, a pen laid across the top.

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she pulled out the chair beside her.

"Sit," she said quietly.

I sat.

She slid the legal pad toward me. Her handwriting filled the top half of the page—neat, numbered questions. Dates. Documentation. Joint accounts. The name of Marcelo's publicist.

"I need you to walk me through everything," she said. "Start with the finances."

I talked until the sun came up. She took notes in her precise attorney's shorthand, asking follow-up questions I hadn't thought of, catching inconsistencies I would have missed. By the time Leo woke up, she had a shortlist of three family law firms written at the bottom of the page.

She turned the pad toward me.

"These are the best," she said. "Pick one."

I circled the top name without hesitation.

Two days later, I flew to Los Angeles.

Marcelo's trailer was parked on the Paramount lot, gleaming white in the January sun. I knocked once and let myself in.

He was sprawled in the leather chair I'd negotiated into his contract rider, scrolling through his phone. He glanced up when I entered, then smiled. That easy, careless smile that used to make my chest ache.

"Nadia," he said. "What are you doing here?"

I set the envelope on the table between us.

"Divorce papers," I said. "I want full custody of Leo. Uncontested."

He stared at me. Then he laughed.

"You're serious."

"Sign them," I said.

He leaned back in the chair and laced his hands behind his head. The posture of a man who'd never lost anything.

"You're nothing without me," he said. "You know that, right? You think you can just walk away? You think anyone's going to take you seriously?"

I looked at him for a long moment. At the face I'd loved. The career I'd built. The man who had never once seen me.

"Watch me," I said. "Then."

I turned and walked out.

That night, Leo and I boarded a flight back to New York. He fell asleep before takeoff, his head in my lap. I looked out the window at the lights of Los Angeles shrinking below us and felt nothing at all.

Marcelo didn't sign the papers.

But I was already done waiting for his permission.
