Chapter 4

The pharmacy on Lexington was the kind with fluorescent lights that made everyone look sick.

I stood in line with Madeline on my hip. She was chewing on her fist. Drool darkened the collar of her onesie. I needed diaper cream. I needed wipes. I needed to get out of the brownstone for an hour.

The woman in front of me turned around. She was maybe fifty. Scrubs under her coat. A hospital ID clipped to her pocket.

She looked at me. Then she smiled.

"Elodie?"

I didn't recognize her. I shifted Madeline to my other hip.

"I'm sorry," I said. "Do I—"

"Janet. I was a nurse at Dr. Brenner's office. You came in a few times with your husband." She glanced at Madeline. "Oh, congratulations! You finally got your baby."

"Thank you."

She tilted her head. "I wasn't sure it would happen, honestly. After the vasectomy. But I guess the reversal worked?"

The air in the pharmacy went very still.

"The reversal," I repeated.

She nodded. "Your husband came in for the consultation. What was it, three years ago? Dr. Brenner told him the success rate drops after the first five years, but I guess you got lucky." She smiled again. "These things always work out."

The line moved forward. She turned back around. She paid for her prescription. She left.

I stood there. Madeline pulled at my hair. I didn't feel it.

The cashier called next. I set the diaper cream on the counter. I paid. I took the bag. I walked out.

***

I walked home the long way. Down Lexington. Across 72nd. I didn't look at the storefronts. I didn't look at the people.

Three years ago.

We'd been married for six months.

I thought about the first IVF cycle. The injections I gave myself in the bathroom. The bruises on my stomach. Weston holding my hand in the waiting room. His face so serious. So concerned.

I thought about the second cycle. The third. The fourth.

I thought about the ectopic pregnancy. The emergency room. The surgery. Weston in the chair beside my bed when I woke up, his head in his hands.

"We'll try again," he'd said. "We'll keep trying."

I stopped walking. I stood on the corner of 74th and Third. A bus went past. Someone bumped my shoulder. I didn't move.

He knew.

Every waiting room. Every injection. Every negative test. Every time I cried in the bathroom with the door locked.

He knew.

Madeline made a sound. I looked down at her. Her eyes were wide. Dark like mine. She reached for my face.

I started walking again.

***

The brownstone was quiet when I got back.

Kamiyah was out. Weston was at the office. The nanny was in the kitchen.

I went upstairs. I put Madeline down for her nap. I stood over the crib and watched her eyes close. Her mouth went soft. Her hand opened on the sheet.

I went back downstairs. I walked into Weston's study.

The filing cabinet was in the corner. Black metal. Four drawers. I had never opened it. I had never needed to.

I pulled the top drawer. Locked.

I tried the second. Locked.

I stood there for a moment. Then I went to his desk. I opened the top drawer. Pens. Paper clips. Business cards. I opened the second drawer. Files. Bank statements. I kept going.

In the bottom drawer, under a stack of old contracts, I found a small key taped to the inside of the drawer.

I took it. I went back to the filing cabinet.

The key fit.

I opened the top drawer. Medical records. Insurance papers. I flipped through them. I found the folder labeled "Dr. Brenner."

I opened it.

The vasectomy was dated April 14th. Three years ago. Six months into our marriage.

The consultation for the reversal was dated two months ago. After Madeline was born.

I closed the folder. I put it back. I locked the drawer. I put the key back where I found it.

I went to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the table with my hands wrapped around the mug.

I stared at the wall.

I didn't cry. I didn't shake. I didn't feel anything at all.

Something inside me that had been cracking for months — through the group chat, through the slap, through the guest bed and the plastic bag of toiletries — finished breaking.

But it broke clean.

Like a bone that would set stronger.

I drank my coffee. I rinsed the mug. I dried it. I put it back in the cabinet.

Then I went back to the study. I opened my laptop. I started a new document.

I titled it: "What I Need."

I started typing.

Bank accounts. Passwords. Madeline's birth certificate. My passport. The lease. The insurance papers. The name of Weston's attorney. The name of his accountant. Every document in that filing cabinet.

I would memorize it all. I would photograph it all. I would take everything I needed and nothing I didn't.

And then I would leave.

I heard Madeline cry upstairs. I closed the laptop. I stood. I went to her.

I picked her up. I held her against my chest. I kissed the top of her head.

"It's okay," I whispered. "Mama's got you."

And for the first time in three years, I meant it.
