Chapter 3

The photo ran above the fold in the Sunday society pages. Tobias, in a charcoal suit, one hand at my throat, adjusting the silk scarf that had slipped off my shoulder at the gallery opening. I was laughing at something over his shoulder, my head tipped back, my eyes half closed. It wasn't posed. I hadn't even known the photographer was there.

I found out later that Ronin saw it with his coffee, the same morning the business section ran a separate piece two pages over: WARREN GROUP CEO ACQUIRES CROSSFIELD GALLERY, GIFTS ENTIRE COLLECTION TO WIFE. I hadn't asked Tobias to buy it. I'd mentioned once, in passing, over dinner, that I loved the Monet they had on loan. Three weeks later the deed was in my name.

I wasn't in the room when Ronin read either article. But I've learned enough about him to build the scene without being there. The way his jaw would have tightened first, before anything else moved. The way his hand would have gone still around the mug. Not sadness. Something uglier and more familiar to him — the particular fury of a man watching someone he threw away become priceless to somebody else.

He started talking to Fallon differently after that. I know because she started talking about me differently, too — in rooms I wasn't in, to people who reported back to people who eventually reported to Tobias's security team, who reported to me.

"She's performing," Fallon told a table of women at a Junior League luncheon three days later, dabbing beneath her eyes with a cocktail napkin, careful not to smudge her mascara. "That happiness — it's for him. To hurt him. She's always been like that." A pause, timed like a held note. "I just wish she'd let us live."

By Thursday she'd staged a breakdown in the same restaurant, loud enough for three tables to hear, soft enough to look involuntary. Someone posted about it online without naming names. Everyone in Ronin's circle knew exactly who she meant.

That was the same week the second batch of messages appeared.

They were different this time — more careful, more current. Not sent to Fallon's old number, but supposedly to Fallon's new one, the one she'd had for two years. Someone had gone to the trouble of referencing recent events. A veiled line about Tobias's driver. A comment about the gallery, like whoever wrote it had read the same article Ronin had. Amateur enough that I could see the seams if I looked. Convincing enough that Kimberly didn't look.

She brought them to Mack with her hands actually shaking — I heard about that detail secondhand, too, from the same quiet channels — laying the printed pages on his kitchen table like evidence in a trial only she believed was real.

"She's not just after Ronin anymore," Kimberly reportedly said. "She's threatening her husband now too. She's unraveling, Mack. We have to do something before she hurts someone."

They agreed, apparently, without much debate. They always agreed quickly when Fallon was the one crying.

My phone rang on a Friday evening. I was on the terrace, watching the light go copper over the Sound, when Kimberly's name lit up the screen. I almost didn't answer. Some instinct — the smart one, the one I'd built with effort over five years — told me not to.

I answered anyway.

"Maeve." Her voice was soft. Softer than the café. Softer than I remembered it ever being with me. "I've been thinking. This has gone too far, hasn't it? All of it. The distance. The anger." A pause, perfectly placed. "I'd like us to sit down. Just family. No Ronin, no Fallon, no cameras. I want to hear you, Maeve. I want to understand."

I stood very still, the wind off the water pulling at my hair, and felt something in my chest do the thing it always did when Kimberly spoke to me like this — that small, humiliating leap of hope, the same one that had survived a childhood of being second, a fire, a divorce, five years of silence. It should have been dead by now. It wasn't.

"When," I said. Not really a question.

"Sunday. The house. Just us."

I knew, somewhere underneath the hope, exactly what kind of trap a locked door and a familiar kitchen could be. I knew what Fallon's fabricated messages were building toward, even if I couldn't yet see the shape of it. And still some stubborn, unhealed part of me — the part that had spent a lifetime trying to be chosen — said yes before I could stop it.

"I'll come," I said.

Tobias was in the study when I told him, the lamp throwing gold across the papers on his desk. I watched his face for the flicker of alarm I expected. It didn't come. He only looked at me for a long moment, taking in whatever he saw in my expression, and nodded once.

"Sunday," he said. Not a question either.

"Sunday."

He didn't argue. He didn't tell me not to go, didn't remind me what her love had cost me before. He simply reached for his phone, and as I turned to leave the room, I heard him dial, heard his voice drop into that low, level register I'd come to recognize — the one that meant something was already being arranged, quietly, three steps ahead of whatever was waiting for me on the other side of that door.
