Chapter 3

Kaysen found me at the boundary marker two days later, standing on Shadowridge soil like the line in the dirt still belonged to him.

"You're embarrassing the pack, Nova." No Alpha tone under it. I noticed that immediately — the flatness of his voice, stripped of the weight that used to bend rooms. Out here, past the marker stones, he had no authority to press into my spine. He just had words, and without the tone behind them, his words sounded like what they'd always actually been.

"Withdraw the petition," he said. "Come home. We'll figure the rest out privately."

"There's nothing to figure out." I kept my field journal tucked under my arm, my thumb resting on its worn spine instead of my wrist — I didn't need the old habit anymore, not for him. "The petition proceeds unless you sign a voluntary transfer for the territory my records prove I funded. Healer's wing. The roof. Border patrol payroll for three winters. It's all itemized."

"You're doing this because you're bitter."

I looked at him — really looked, the way you look at a stranger's photograph and try to remember why it used to matter — and felt nothing rise to meet the accusation. No sting. No old ache reaching for the bait.

"I'm doing this because it's true," I said.

He turned and walked back toward the trees, shoulders squared in that way he does when he's decided he's won an argument he actually lost. My wolf watched him go from somewhere behind my ribs, quiet, unmoved, the way you'd watch weather pass over a field that wasn't yours to worry about anymore.

The Council's notice came the next morning by courier hawk, sealed with Ironveil's crest. Mediation, neutral packland lodge, three days out. Senior arbitrator assigned: Beckett Griffin, Lycan Prince of Ironveil Court.

I read the name twice. It meant nothing to me yet, beyond rank — Lycan Prince, above every regional Alpha, a title I'd only ever seen referenced in the margins of treaties, never in person. I set the notice beside my journal and got to work.

I didn't sleep that night. I built the counter-alliance proposal clause by clause — mutual defense terms, healer-exchange rights, warrior recruitment protections that favored displaced wolves like the ones already starting to slip quietly out of Shadowridge's borders. I wanted to walk into that lodge with more than a grievance in my hands. Grievances get pitied. Proposals get negotiated.

Somewhere around the second hour, I opened the drawer where I kept the small glass vial of scent suppressant and didn't pick it up.

I'd worn it every day for seven years, convinced the wolf underneath it was faint, embarrassing, something to be managed rather than known. I sat with the vial a long moment, then closed the drawer instead.

By morning the cabin smelled like white sage and something darker underneath it — night-blooming jasmine, sweet and close, filling every corner of a room that had smelled like nothing for years. It startled me, how much space it took up. How much space I took up, apparently, when I stopped asking permission to.

The lodge sat on true neutral ground, high beams and a long table already crowded with Council seals and parchment. I walked in with the claim document in one hand and the alliance proposal in the other, spine straight, journal left behind — I wouldn't need it today. Today I needed to be believed, not sourced.

I felt him before I saw him.

A man at the head of the table went rigid the moment I crossed the threshold — not a flinch, something heavier, like the floor had shifted under just him. His hands found the table's edge and gripped it. His jaw locked. Beside him, a second man — leaner, sharper-eyed — went equally still, head tilting a fraction like he'd heard something the rest of the room hadn't.

I didn't know yet that this was Beckett Griffin's wolf roaring a single word so loud that his Beta caught the echo of it through mind-link. I only knew that something in the dead, hollow place under my collarbone — cold since the night Kaysen rejected me — bloomed warm for the first time in weeks. Cedar smoke and iron. A scent I had no name for yet, pulling at something in my chest I'd assumed had gone permanently silent.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist. One point of pressure. One thing to stand on.

The man at the head of the table exhaled — once, twice, a third breath — and something in his face resettled into careful neutrality. He sat. He said nothing yet. He simply watched me the way you'd watch a door you didn't know was about to open.

I set the claim document on the table between us and did not let my hand shake.

"Councilman Griffin," I said. "Thank you for hearing this."

And I opened the first page.
