Chapter 1

I arrived at Ethan's dorm with a bouquet of white lilies cradled in one arm and a homemade chocolate cake balanced in the other. The early evening sun cast long shadows across Yale's historic campus as I navigated the familiar path to his building, my heart light with anticipation. Five days into graduation week, and I still couldn't believe that after twenty years together, Ethan Williams was finally, officially my fiancé.

The weight of the small velvet box in my pocket—containing the protection I'd picked up earlier—pressed against my hip as I climbed the stairs. My cheeks warmed at the thought of another night wrapped in his arms. Four nights of passion had already consumed multiple boxes, but I couldn't get enough of him. Each touch felt like the culmination of our shared history, every whispered promise a bridge to our future.

"You're glowing," a passing student remarked with a knowing smile as I reached Ethan's floor.

I couldn't help but beam back. Of course I was glowing. Everything I'd ever wanted was falling into place. The childhood sweetheart our families had practically betrothed me to had proposed in front of the entire campus last week. The diamond on my finger caught the fluorescent hallway light, sending tiny rainbows dancing across the wall.

As I approached Ethan's door, I shifted the cake to free my hand, ready to knock. But the sound of laughter—his laughter—stopped me. Something in its tone made my fingers freeze mid-air.

"Seriously, man, you're cold-blooded," came a voice I recognized as Liam, his roommate. "You've been stringing Sophia along since you were what, six?"

"It's not stringing along if it serves a purpose," Ethan replied, his voice carrying that smooth confidence I'd always adored. Now, it sent an unfamiliar chill down my spine. "She's been the perfect test subject. The pill made her moody, the patch gave her headaches, but the IUD? Perfection. Madison won't have to suffer through any trial and error."

The lilies trembled in my suddenly unsteady grip. Madison? Madison Chen? The beautiful exchange student from Ethan's economics class?

"And that proposal!" Another voice joined in. "The whole campus is still talking about it."

"Just a dress rehearsal," Ethan said, followed by the distinctive pop of a beer can opening. "When I propose to Madison next month, it'll be flawless. I've worked out all the kinks with Sophia."

The cake slipped from my hands, landing with a soft thud against the thin carpet. Chocolate crumbs scattered around my feet, but I barely noticed. Through the cracked door, I could see Ethan lounging on his bed, one arm casually propped behind his head, surrounded by his laughing roommates.

"But doesn't Sophia think you're getting married after graduation?" Liam asked, a hint of discomfort in his voice.

Ethan's dismissive shrug sent acid burning up my throat. "She's just my trial run—my real proposal's for Madison. Sophia's been convenient, you know? Our families are close, she's always been devoted... but Madison's the one I want to build a life with."

The world tilted beneath my feet. Twenty years. Twenty years of loving him, supporting him, believing in our future. Twenty years of putting his dreams first, of planning our life together. And all along, I'd been nothing but a placeholder. A test subject. A rehearsal for the woman he actually loved.

I stood frozen outside his door, the lilies now crushed in my grip, petals falling like tears around my feet. Inside, Ethan's laughter continued, oblivious to the fact that he had just shattered my entire world with a few casual sentences.

Something hot and unfamiliar began to rise within me, burning away the initial shock. It wasn't just heartbreak. It was something darker, something I'd never allowed myself to feel toward Ethan before.

As his words replayed in my mind—"She's just my trial run"—I felt the first crack form in the foundation of the love I'd built my life around. And through that crack, twenty years of suppressed questions began to seep through, threatening to flood and drown everything I thought I knew about us.

About him.

About me.
