Chapter 3

The pack council chamber smelled like old leather and tension. I stood at the head of the table where Gideon used to sit, my hands resting lightly on the back of the chair I hadn't yet claimed. Eight senior wolves watched me with varying degrees of skepticism. Loretta sat at the far end, her posture perfect, her expression carefully neutral.

I kept my voice soft. Deferential. Exactly what they expected.

"Pack law grants a widowed Luna interim authority until a successor is confirmed," I said. "I'm not asking to lead permanently. I'm asking to prevent a power vacuum while we grieve."

The Beta—Marcus, a gray-furred wolf who'd served under Gideon's father—shifted in his seat. "The pack needs stability," he said slowly. "Not uncertainty."

"Then let me provide it," I replied. "Temporarily. Until the Council determines what comes next."

Loretta's fingers drummed once against the table. A small gesture. Calculated. "The girl has a point," she said. "Better a known presence than an open succession crisis."

I didn't look at her. Didn't let my face show anything except quiet determination and appropriate grief.

Marcus glanced around the table. Saw no strong opposition. Nodded once. "Interim authority. Three months. Then we revisit."

"Agreed," I said.

Loretta smiled thinly. She thought she'd won. Thought she could manage a grieving widow far more easily than a power struggle between ambitious wolves.

I left the chamber with my head bowed and my hands clasped. Played the part all the way back to my room.

Then I locked the door and let my wolf press against my skin—not shifting, just present, coiled and waiting.

Three months. It was more than enough.

The administrative office sat in the east wing of the pack house, a cramped room that smelled like dust and old paper. I spent the first two days sorting through supply records and patrol schedules, making myself visible, making myself useful. On the third day, I opened Loretta's private financial ledger.

The entries were meticulous. Color-coded. Cross-referenced. She'd always been thorough.

I found it on page forty-seven.

A transfer. Fifty thousand dollars. Routed through two intermediary accounts to a European bank. Dated two weeks before Gideon's supposed death.

I read the entry three times. Checked the routing number against the pack's approved vendor list. It wasn't there.

My hands didn't shake as I pulled out my phone and photographed the page. The camera's shutter sound seemed too loud in the silent room.

I kept flipping. Found two more transfers. Same routing number. Smaller amounts. Dated after the funeral.

She was funding him. Keeping him alive while he hid.

I closed the ledger carefully. Put it back exactly where I'd found it. Walked out of the office with the same quiet, grief-dulled expression I'd worn all week.

That night, I added the photos to my locked box. The evidence was growing. Slowly. Patiently. One piece at a time.

I found Caden at the eastern border on a Thursday afternoon. He was checking supply crates, his movements efficient and careful. When he saw me approach, he straightened but didn't speak.

I stopped a few feet away. Let the silence stretch.

"If you had moved that night," I said quietly, "what would you have done?"

He didn't pretend not to understand. His jaw tightened. "Stepped between him and you."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I was afraid," he said. The honesty in his voice was almost painful. "And that makes me a coward."

I studied his face. Saw genuine shame there. Genuine regret.

"I need someone who can run border checks on my schedule," I said. "Not the Beta's. Someone who can keep his own counsel."

Caden's eyes sharpened. "What are you building?"

"Something that should have been built a long time ago," I replied. "What was done on that ground cannot be undone. But what comes next is still being decided."

He held my gaze for a long moment. Then nodded once. "Tell me what you need."

I did. He listened. Agreed to everything.

When I walked away, I felt the weight shift slightly. One ally. Not much. But it was a start.

The clearing Atlas had marked sat deep in the forest, far enough from pack territory that no patrol would stumble across it. I arrived just after midnight, shifting into my wolf form the moment I crossed the tree line.

Atlas was already there. Leaning against a fallen log, watching me with those smoke-gray eyes.

I shifted back to human. Stood there in the moonlight while he pulled a folder from his pack and handed it over.

"Lycan Council evidentiary standards," he said. "You'll need to meet every single one if you want the tribunal to hold."

I opened the folder. Scanned the dense legal text. "Blood evidence. Witness testimony. Financial records."

"All of it," Atlas confirmed. "And it has to be airtight. One gap and they'll dismiss the case."

I nodded slowly. Started to ask a question.

Then his scent hit me.

Not the faint trace I'd caught before. The full, unmuted pull of it—cedar and iron and something deeper, something that made my wolf surge forward with an urgency I couldn't suppress.

Mate.

True mate.

Second-chance mate.

I went entirely still. My breath caught. The bond stretched between us like a living thing, warm and certain and absolutely impossible.

Atlas didn't move. Just watched me with an expression I couldn't read.

I stepped back. Forced my voice steady. "That's not something I can afford right now."

"I know," he said quietly.

The scent didn't fade. Didn't soften. Just sat there between us, undeniable.

I looked down at the folder in my hands. At the careful, precise notes he'd made in the margins. At the evidence he was helping me build.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked.

He was silent for a moment. Then: "Because you're building something worth protecting."

I met his eyes. Saw truth there. Saw patience.

Saw a future I didn't dare name yet.

"Three months," I said. "Loretta gave me three months."

Atlas smiled slightly. "Then we'd better make them count."

I nodded once. Shifted back into my wolf form. Ran back through the forest with his scent still clinging to my fur and my wolf singing in my chest.

When I climbed back into my narrow cot that night, I didn't sleep. Just lay there in the dark, feeling the hollow ache where Gideon's bond used to be and the new, warm pull where Atlas's bond was trying to form.

I couldn't afford it. Not yet. Not while Loretta was watching. Not while I was still building the case that would bring Gideon down.

But it was there.

And it wasn't going away.
