When My Dead Mate Returned for My Daughter Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly three minutes past eight on the night of the Come of Age Ceremony.

I knew because I was staring at the ceremonial clock tower when Gideon's scent hit me—Harley's jasmine and musk layered so thick on his skin it made my stomach turn. The incomplete mate bond flared hot behind my sternum, a sharp sting that said he'd been with her less than an hour ago. He didn't even bother to wash.

The pack had gathered in a wide circle around the ceremonial platform, hundreds of wolves in their formal attire, waiting for the Alpha to bless the young ones coming into their wolves tonight. I stood near the edge, one hand resting on the small swell of my belly beneath my dress. Six months along. The pup kicked once, as if sensing something wrong.

Gideon stepped onto the platform without looking at me. His eyes swept the crowd—cold, flat, contemptuous—and when they finally landed on me, there was nothing in them. Not anger. Not regret. Just a decision already made.

"Aura Green," he said, his voice carrying across the silent crowd. "Come forward."

Every wolf turned to stare. I felt their eyes like a physical weight. My legs moved before my brain caught up, carrying me toward the platform on instinct. The bond pulled tight, a leash I couldn't cut.

I climbed the steps. Stood before him. Waited.

Harley's scent rolled off him in waves. My wolf—the one that had never awakened, the one everyone said didn't exist—stirred somewhere deep inside me for the first time in my life. A low, warning growl I couldn't voice.

Gideon's lip curled. "Kneel."

I didn't move.

His Alpha aura slammed into me like a fist. My knees buckled. My spine bowed. My hands hit the cold stone hard enough to scrape skin. The pressure crushed down on my shoulders, my chest, forcing the air from my lungs. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't lift my head. The bond screamed in protest, trying to make me submit, trying to make this easier.

It didn't.

"I, Gideon, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack," he said, his voice steady and clear, "reject you, Aura Green, as my mate and Luna."

The bond tore.

It didn't snap cleanly. It ripped, slow and vicious, like claws dragging through muscle. Fire erupted behind my ribs and spread—burning through my chest, my throat, my skull. I heard myself make a sound I didn't recognize. My vision went white at the edges.

The pack watched in silence. No one moved. No one spoke.

I stayed on my knees, gasping, as the fire kept burning. My hands curled into fists on the stone. The mark on my neck—the one he'd given me the night we were forced to mate—went cold first. Then it went hollow. Empty. Like a door closing in an abandoned house.

Gideon shifted.

I heard the crack of bone, the ripple of fur. Smelled the musk of his wolf. I looked up just in time to see him lunge.

His claws caught me across the shoulder and sent me skidding across the platform. My head cracked against stone. Blood filled my mouth. The pup—

The pain was different this time. Sharper. Lower. A tearing sensation deep in my belly that made the bond's agony feel like a whisper.

I curled onto my side. Felt the warmth spreading beneath me. Smelled copper and salt.

Someone screamed. It might have been me.

Footsteps. A woman's voice—Maren, the pack Healer—shouting something I couldn't parse. Hands on my arms, lifting me, dragging me off the platform. The crowd parted. I caught glimpses of faces—shocked, horrified, carefully blank.

No one helped.

Maren got me to the healer ward. Laid me on a cot. Pressed cloths to the bleeding. Her hands shook.

"The pup," I whispered.

She didn't answer. Didn't need to. I could feel it—the absence where life had been.

The bond's hollow ache pulsed in rhythm with my heartbeat. Gideon was still alive. Still breathing. Still standing on that platform, probably accepting congratulations.

I closed my eyes.

And something inside me cracked open.

It started as pressure—a building, crushing weight in my chest that had nothing to do with the bond. Then heat. Then movement, like something living had been caged too long and finally found the bars weak enough to break.

My body convulsed. Bones shifted. Fur rippled across my skin. I tried to stop it—tried to hold it back—but it was too late.

The shift tore through me in seconds.

When I opened my eyes, the world looked different. Sharper. Brighter. I could smell everything—Maren's fear-sweat, the blood on the cot, the faint trace of wolfsbane someone had tracked in on their boots. And beneath it all, something else. Something old and vast and powerful, rising from the base of my spine.

Maren stumbled backward, her face gone white. "Moon Goddess," she breathed.

I looked down. Saw massive silver-white paws. Felt the weight of a wolf far larger than any I'd seen in Ironveil.

The shift reversed as violently as it came. I collapsed back into human form, gasping, my skin slick with sweat and blood.

Maren didn't speak. Just stood there, staring.

A shadow moved in the doorway.

I turned my head. Saw a man—tall, dark-haired, eyes like smoke. He stepped into the ward without asking permission, his gaze fixed on me with an intensity that made my new wolf stir again.

"You need to hide that," he said quietly. His voice was calm. Certain. "If Loretta finds out what you are, she'll kill you to control it."

I blinked at him. "Who—"

"Atlas Freeman," he said. "Just passing through." He crouched beside the cot, close enough that I caught his scent—pine and cold water, nothing like the wolves I knew. "You're Lycan-blooded. Royal line. I can smell it."

My breath caught.

"Play the broken mate," Atlas continued. "Suppress the wolf. Stay weak. Stay invisible. Until you've built something they can't take from you."

I stared at him. "What do you want?"

His mouth curved, just slightly. "Ironveil borders three Lycan Council corridors. I want to see what you build."

I held his gaze. Felt the truth in his words—not a rescue. A contract.

"Deal," I whispered.

He nodded once and stood. "Three days. Loretta will summon you. When she does, choose to stay. Make her think you're manageable."

Then he was gone.

Maren finally moved, sinking onto the stool beside me. "Aura," she said, her voice shaking. "What just happened?"

I closed my eyes. Felt the hollow ache where the bond used to be. Felt the new, coiled power where my wolf now lived.

"I woke up," I said.
