Chapter 2

I went back to work the next morning because I didn't know what else to do. Staying in the hotel room felt like hiding. I wasn't going to hide.

Marcus Webb was already at his desk when I arrived. He looked up, took one look at my face, and said nothing. He just slid an extra coffee across my desk.

"Thanks," I said.

He nodded and went back to his screen. No questions. No prying. Just the coffee and the silence.

I sat down and opened my laptop. My inbox was full. I started working through it, one email at a time. The rhythm helped. Click. Read. Reply. Delete. It was something I could control.

Around noon, my phone buzzed. A text from Jaden: *Can we talk?*

I deleted it.

Another one came five minutes later: *Please. Just coffee. That's all I'm asking.*

I turned my phone face down.

Marcus glanced over. "You good?"

"Yeah," I said. "I'm good."

I wasn't. But I would be.

Three days later, Jaden was waiting outside the coffee shop near my office. I saw him through the window before I walked in. He was sitting at a corner table, two cups already on the surface. He'd planned this.

I almost turned around. But I was tired of avoiding him. Tired of the texts. Tired of pretending he didn't exist.

I walked in.

He stood up when he saw me. "Whit. Thank you. Thank you for coming."

I didn't sit. "You have five minutes."

"Please. Just sit."

I sat. I didn't touch the coffee he'd bought me.

Jaden leaned forward, hands folded on the table. He looked like he'd rehearsed this. "I've been thinking a lot about what happened. About us. And I think we need to talk about what a modern relationship actually looks like."

I said nothing.

"I'm not trying to make excuses," he continued. "But I think we've been operating under some outdated assumptions. A lot of couples today have more... evolved arrangements. Open relationships. Where physical intimacy doesn't have to threaten emotional commitment."

I stared at him.

"I've been supporting us," he said. "Financially. Emotionally. I've given you everything. And I'm not saying that entitles me to anything, but I think we need to be realistic about what a partnership means. It's not just about one night. It's about everything I've done for you. For us."

He paused. Waiting for me to respond.

I picked up my coffee. I held it for a moment. Then I set it back down without drinking.

"You think you've given me everything," I said quietly.

He nodded. "I have."

"You think paying for dinners and buying me things is the same as love."

"It's not just that—"

"You think I should be grateful enough to look the other way when you fuck someone else in our bed."

His face flushed. "That's not what I'm saying."

"Yes, it is." I leaned forward. "You just spent five minutes explaining why your money should buy you permission to cheat. You called it evolved. You called it modern. But what you're really saying is that you think I'm something you purchased."

"Whitley—"

"The tragedy isn't that you cheated, Jaden. The tragedy is that I spent two years believing expenditure was the same as love. That I looked at your credit card receipts and mistook them for intimacy."

He opened his mouth. Closed it.

I stood up. "You don't understand a single thing about me. You never did."

I walked out. I left the coffee on the table. I didn't look back.

The next morning, Scott Aguilar called an all-hands meeting. A new firm was bidding on the Cascade acquisition we'd been pursuing for months. A competitor. He wanted the full team in the conference room.

I arrived early. Marcus was already there, flipping through the briefing materials. "You see who the other firm is?" he asked.

I glanced at the folder. My stomach dropped.

Gray Capital.

Niko.

"Yeah," I said. "I see it."

Scott walked in ten minutes later with his senior team. And behind them, in a charcoal suit that probably cost more than my monthly rent, was Niko Gray.

He didn't look at me. He shook Scott's hand, nodded to the room, and took a seat at the far end of the table.

Scott started the pitch. He talked about our firm's track record, our client relationships, our strategic vision. He was polished. Confident.

Niko listened without expression.

When Scott finished, Niko leaned back in his chair. "Your projections assume a market correction that isn't coming," he said. His voice was even. Almost bored. "Your timeline is aggressive to the point of fantasy. And your valuation model ignores three regulatory changes that go into effect next quarter."

Scott's jaw tightened. "We've accounted for—"

"You haven't." Niko slid a single sheet of paper across the table. "Here's what you missed."

Scott picked it up. His face went pale.

Niko stood. "We'll have our counteroffer to you by end of day." He buttoned his jacket. Then, for the first time since entering the room, he looked at me.

Our eyes met. He didn't smile. Didn't nod. Just looked.

Then he walked out.

Marcus exhaled slowly. "Well," he muttered. "That was efficient."

I said nothing. My hands were clenched under the table.

Scott was staring at the paper Niko had left behind. His knuckles were white.

"Meeting adjourned," he said quietly.

I walked back to my desk. I sat down. I stared at my screen.

My phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.

*Your analysis on the Cascade deal was solid. Scott's presentation wasn't.*

I knew who it was.

I didn't reply.

Another text came through a moment later.

*You're better than the room you're in.*

I stared at it for a long time.

Then I turned my phone face down and got back to work.
