Chapter 2

The conference room smelled like burnt coffee and ambition. Twelve of us sat around the long table, laptops open, legal pads out, waiting for Simon to run through the Westfield discovery timeline. I'd assigned Aylani the merger acquisition document review two days earlier—a task so basic I'd written the instructions in bullet points, like I was teaching a paralegal fresh out of a certificate program.

I walked the room through the schedule. "Aylani, I need the privilege log cross-referenced by Thursday. That gives you two full days."

"Two days?" Simon's voice cut in before she could even open her mouth.

Every head turned. Mine included.

"That's an unreasonable deadline for a new associate," he said, not looking at me, looking at her. Aylani's lips parted into something between surprise and gratitude, a performance so smooth I almost admired it.

"It's a straightforward cross-reference," I said. My voice stayed level. I'd had three years of practice keeping it level. "I did the same task in half that time my first month."

"You're not everyone, Jade." He said it like a compliment. It wasn't.

The room went quiet in that specific way rooms go quiet when everyone is pretending to read their own notes. I held his gaze for two seconds. Just two. Long enough for him to know I'd noticed. Not long enough to give anyone a story to tell at the water cooler.

Then I looked down and wrote on my legal pad. Not shorthand for the case. A single line, dated, timed: *S.W. overrides task assignment re: A.V. — team present.*

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't argue further. I said, "Friday, then," and moved on to the next item like nothing had happened, because in this building, nothing ever officially did.

After the meeting, I stopped by the facilities office under the pretense of asking about the broken thermostat on the fourteenth floor. While the building manager pulled up the work order, I glanced at the security directory taped inside his binder and noted which camera covered the war room door, which one caught the hallway outside conference room B. I didn't need it yet. I filed it away the way I file away everything—quietly, for later, in case later ever came.

That night, I forwarded the meeting's email thread to a folder I'd created weeks ago, one with an innocuous name buried three layers deep in my inbox. I told myself it wasn't paranoia. It was just how I'd always operated. I never walked into a fight without already knowing how I intended to win it.

Friday afternoon, the fight found me anyway.

I was drafting a motion when my email pinged. Then pinged again. Then didn't stop.

Aylani had sent the privileged merger documents—unredacted, full financial disclosures, our client's negotiating position laid out like a menu—directly to opposing counsel's client. Reyes Capital. Calvin's firm.

I read the email chain twice, waiting for the part where it turned out to be a draft, a mistake caught before it went out. It didn't turn out that way. She'd hit send on a Thursday afternoon and gone home for the weekend without noticing.

I called her. Straight to voicemail. I texted. Nothing.

So I did what I always did. I sat down and I fixed it.

I spent Saturday drafting a formal clawback notice, citing every rule of privilege I could find, my apartment lit only by my laptop screen and the take-out containers piling up on the coffee table. I ordered pad thai I barely touched. I called opposing counsel's office line twice, left messages, then finally got a paralegal on Sunday morning who promised to flag it for Calvin directly.

Somewhere around midnight Saturday, I saw a photo pop up on my phone—Makenna had tagged me in a group chat, not realizing I wasn't actually free to look at brunch pictures. Aylani was in one of them, laughing at some rooftop restaurant in the West Village, a mimosa raised, sunglasses pushed up into her hair. The caption read: *Best weekend off in ages.*

I didn't respond. I closed the app and went back to the memo.

By Sunday night I had a full damage-control packet: the clawback notice, a privilege log rebuild, a memo to Simon outlining exposure, and a draft apology to the client that didn't actually apologize for anything I'd done. I sent it all at 11:47 p.m., cc'ing Raymond Black because I'd learned, the hard way, that documentation was its own kind of insurance.

Simon's reply came four minutes later. One line.

*We'll talk Monday.*

I stared at it for a long moment, the cursor blinking on my own unsent response. Then I closed my laptop, turned off the lamp, and sat in the dark a while, listening to the radiator hiss, thinking that somewhere in this city, a woman who hadn't done a single hour of work that weekend was sleeping soundly, and I was the one who'd spend Monday morning cleaning up after her.
