Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, three miles into the northern territory run.

I didn't see it coming. I was running behind Landon, watching his dark wolf weave through the pines, when the wind shifted. That's when Aubree Kelly's scent hit me — not faint, not accidental. Layered. Deep. The kind of saturation that only comes from repeated contact, from bodies pressed close, from scent-bonding that mimics mating.

It was all over his fur.

My wolf, silent for seven years, released a sound I'd never heard before — a low whimper that felt like it came from somewhere underneath my ribs. My legs locked mid-stride. The forest blurred. Landon kept running, his powerful form disappearing into the tree line, completely unaware I'd stopped.

His wolf was never dormant.

Seven years. Seven years of believing him when he said his wolf couldn't recognize a mate bond, couldn't scent me the way other wolves scented their fated pairs. Seven years of telling myself it didn't matter, that love was enough, that patience would be rewarded. I'd poured everything into Shadowvale — my resources, my contacts, the rare healing herbs that saved this pack from a rogue siege — and the entire time, he'd been running these same trails with her.

I shifted back to human form right there in the clearing, my skin cold despite the morning sun. My hands were shaking. I pressed one palm flat against a tree trunk, feeling the rough bark bite into my skin, needing something solid to anchor me while the world I'd built collapsed.

The Winter Solstice Run. He'd told me he was helping a sick pack member. I'd believed him. I'd stayed home and reorganized the medical supply inventory while he was out here, wolf-to-wolf with Aubree, doing the most intimate thing two wolves can do outside of marking.

I walked back to the pack house alone.

That night, I found Landon in the corridor outside his office. He was still in his running clothes, relaxed, scrolling through his phone. He looked up when I approached, his expression mildly curious, like I was a pack member with a scheduling question.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I reached up, unclasped the Luna pendant he'd given me three years ago, and dropped it at his feet. The metallic sound when it hit the stone floor was sharp enough to make him flinch.

"Release me from the mating," I said. My voice came out low and controlled. "I know about Aubree."

For a moment, he just stared at the pendant. Then he laughed — not nervously, but genuinely amused, like I'd told a joke he didn't expect.

"Tessa," he said, shaking his head. "You're being hysterical."

"I can smell her on you." I kept my hands at my sides, fingers curled into fists. "Not from today. From months. Years. The Winter Solstice Run — you weren't helping anyone. You were with her."

His smile faded. "You don't know what you're talking about."

"Your wolf was never dormant." Each word felt like pulling a thorn from my own chest. "You lied. For seven years, you lied, and I believed you because I loved you."

"Enough." His Alpha tone dropped into the space between us — that particular frequency designed to make subordinate wolves submit. He stepped closer. "You're upset. Go to bed. We'll talk when you're calm."

I didn't move. "Release me."

Something shifted in his face — irritation hardening into something colder. He closed the distance between us in two strides and shoved me, one hand flat on my collarbone, slamming me into the corridor wall hard enough that I heard the plaster crack behind my shoulders.

His face was inches from mine. His voice dropped, bored and flat, like he was explaining something obvious to a child.

"No one leaves me, Tessa."

Then he walked away.

I slid down the cracked wall, my legs giving out, and sat on the cold stone floor. The incomplete mark on my neck — the one that had never fully formed because his wolf had never truly claimed me — throbbed cold and hollow.

My wolf didn't whimper this time. She growled.

The next morning, I retrieved my journal from the locked drawer in the Luna suite.

I'd kept it out of habit, not suspicion — a meticulous record of every resource allocation, every alliance contact, every strategic decision I'd quietly made to hold Shadowvale together. I'd never asked for credit. I'd never needed it. I'd done it because I thought we were building something together.

Now I opened the journal and started cross-referencing dates.

Landon's personal authorization codes. Treasury withdrawals. Luxury boutique charges. Off-territory courier fees. Items I'd never seen, never worn, never received. I traced each transaction with my fingertip, my handwriting neat and precise in the margins as I noted patterns, amounts, timelines.

Seven years of data. Seven years of proof.

My wolf stirred — not in grief, but in something sharper. Colder. Focused.

I didn't weep. I cataloged.

By noon, a courier arrived at the Luna suite with a package from a luxury boutique in the eastern district. The box was wrapped in cream-colored tissue, tied with a silk ribbon. I opened it.

Inside was a custom-fitted intimate set — delicate lace, expensive silk, the kind of thing that required precise body measurements. The scent hit me immediately: Aubree's floral musk, saturated into every thread, as if she'd already worn it.

I turned the box over. The authorization tag was still attached.

Landon's personal code. Pack treasury funds.

I held the fabric in my hands, inhaling the other woman's scent woven into something he'd bought for her with resources I'd helped secure, and my humiliation crystallized into something that was no longer grief.

I didn't destroy it. I photographed the authorization tag with my phone, sealed the package back up, and placed it on top of my journal.

My wolf growled again — low, sustained, deliberate.

It was the first real sound she'd made in seven years.

I opened my laptop and pulled up Shadowvale's medical supply records. Cross-referenced them against my personal logs from the rogue siege — the rare botanical sourcing, the plague-treatment protocols, the alliance contacts that had saved sixty-three lives.

Every entry listed Landon as the pack beneficiary.

None listed me as the provider.

I copied the records into a separate document, my fingers steady on the keyboard, and placed the printed pages beside the treasury evidence and the photographed authorization tag.

The file was thick now. Solid. Undeniable.

I closed the journal and stood up.

Something in my spine had realigned. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I didn't recognize the woman staring back — but I didn't look away.

My wolf said nothing. Neither did I.

But tomorrow, the annual Mate Ceremony would begin.

And Landon had no idea what I was bringing with me.
