Chapter 4

The smell of antiseptic and boiled bandages was the first thing that hit me.

I blinked against the dim light of the healer’s ward. Bandages were wrapped tight around my ribs, and my left shoulder throbbed with a dull, heavy heat where the rogue had torn through the silver brand.

In the corner of the room, Marla sat in a metal folding chair. A dog-eared field manual was open on her lap, but her eyes never shifted down to the pages. She was watching the door.

Against my collarbone, the mark gave a faint, rhythmic pulse.

Blake’s heartbeat. It was slow and steady, ticking away like an indifferent metronome. He was probably in his office, signing border patrol reports, completely untouched by the carnage on the ridge. He had used the bond to freeze me like cattle for slaughter, and now his pulse sat on my skin, calm as ever.

I lay motionless on the cot and conducted a careful inventory of my own chest.

I looked into every corner of my mind, the way someone walks through the frame of a house after a total fire. I checked the ashes for grief. None. I checked for longing, or that old, pathetic hope that he would finally acknowledge me as his Luna. Nothing.

There wasn't even anger left. Anger was fire, and fire consumed energy. I would need my fury later, but right now, there was only a vast, clean hollow. Love hadn't just faded. He had murdered it in the cold mud of the bottleneck.

I turned my head on the thin pillow and looked at Marla.

"I'm ready," I said.

My voice was rough, barely more than a scrape of air, but the words were steady.

Marla didn't hesitate. She closed her book, stood up quietly, and reached into the pocket of her patrol fleece. She placed a heavy black ink pen onto the white sheet beside my fingers.

"The supply room was quiet," she murmured. "Nobody saw."

I nodded, closing my fingers around the cool metal of the pen.

Over the next six days, I gave Blake Montgomery the easiest mate he had ever known.

When the pack healer changed my dressings, I kept my eyes fixed on the floorboards. When the Beta’s mate walked through the recovery wing to deliver laundry, I offered a quiet, submissive nod. I took my meals without complaint. I let my shoulders stay slumped and my chin tilt downward, playing the part of a disgraced, wolfless female whose spirit had finally been broken by the tribunal’s brand and the rogue’s claws.

Through our bond, Blake checked on me twice a day.

It was never a warm touch. It was an Alpha’s casual inspection of pack inventory. He poked at my mind, and every time, I fed him flat, hollow obedience. I let him feel pure exhaustion and resignation. He assumed the pack law had worked. He assumed I had accepted my place in the shadows for good.

He had no idea what I was doing while the ward slept.

Under the dim yellow bulb of my bedside lamp, I wrote.

The rejection document took three drafts to get the pack-law phrasing exact. *I, Elaina Watkins, formally and irrevocably reject you, Blake Montgomery, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, as my mate...* Every line was legally binding. I signed my name at the bottom in firm, dark strokes that didn't waver.

Then came the second letter.

I poured everything onto the paper. Every date, every hour I had logged in my lockbox. Every time Giselle had returned from his quarters reeking of iron and cedar. The mind-link frequency he had carelessly let slip, where he told Reed Cunningham I had lost my spark.

And then, I laid out Giselle’s true game.

*She never wanted your bed, Blake,* I wrote. *She seduced you to prove to me that you were a coward who would break any vow for a younger she-wolf. She traded her pride just to show me what a hollow monster you are. And you fell for every single second of it.*

I pressed my thumb against the weeping corner of my shoulder wound and smeared a crimson print across the envelope flap, sealing the truth in blood.

On Thursday afternoon, while Blake led combat drills on the lower fields, I slipped into his private quarters. The room smelled sickeningly of his cedar cologne. I didn't look at his bed. I walked straight to his mahogany desk, placed the rejection document and the thick, blood-sealed envelope dead center, and weighed them down with his brass letter opener.

He couldn't sit in his chair without seeing them.

At three in the morning, the eastern gorge was pitch-black.

The wind off the rocky drop-off was biting cold, howling through the pines. Marla’s forty-minute patrol gap had just begun.

I stood at the edge of the sheer ravine, pulling the glass vial from my inner coat pocket. The dark tincture sloshed against the glass, smelling of crushed ash and copper.

I broke the black wax with my thumbnail, popped the cork, and drank the whole thing in one swallow.

The agony hit instantly.

It was liquid flame. It tore down my throat and hit my gut like acid, burning through my bloodstream. My knees buckled, but I caught myself against a boulder, clamping my teeth together so hard my jaw creaked. I didn't let out a single breath.

Across my throat, the mark flared with sudden, blinding white heat. It felt like someone had pressed an open blowtorch to my neck. The pain brought tears to my eyes, but I held the silence in my throat. Slowly, the searing fire faded. The rhythmic thud of Blake's heartbeat grew muffled, sinking into a dull, distant vibration before dying out almost completely.

My scent was gone. To any wolf’s nose, I was dead air.

I didn't waste time. I tore a wide strip from the hem of my bloodstained undershirt and pressed it against the fresh scab on my shoulder, soaking the fabric in fresh crimson. I rubbed the bloody cloth violently across the sharp granite at the gorge's edge, leaving dark, sticky smears against the stone.

Then, I kicked my heels into the loose shale, dragging my boots backward toward the drop to mimic the frantic skidding of a body being hauled over the cliff by rogue claws.

When the staging was complete, I turned and scrambled down the rocky slope into the freezing shallows of the border river.

The mountain runoff hit my thighs like knives, washing away the mud, the blood, and whatever microscopic trace of my existence remained. I waded through the rapids until I reached the opposite bank, pulling myself up onto the gravel of the neutral zone.

I was soaked. My ribs screamed with pain. The silver brand on my shoulder burned under the wet cloth.

I didn't turn around to look at the Ironveil tree line.

I had already stripped Blake Montgomery and his pack from my bones hours ago. All I was walking away from now was cold dirt.

Turning my face into the northern wind, toward the smell of salt and the distant coast, I began to walk.
