Chapter 2

The Lycan Council observer arrived the morning of the second day.

I heard the car first — expensive engine, smooth and quiet, nothing like the pack's trucks. Then voices in the main hall above my head. Lance's booming welcome. Another voice, lower, measured, saying something I couldn't make out through the floorboards.

I sat on the cot and listened. My wolf had gone still sometime during the night. Not quiet. Still. Like water before it froze.

Footsteps crossed the hall. The front door opened and closed. Silence.

I pressed my thumb against the silver scar on my wrist. It didn't glow anymore. That had only lasted a few minutes last night — long enough for me to think I'd imagined it. But the voice in my head had been real. *'The seal is cracking.'*

I didn't know what seal. I didn't know who had been speaking. But I knew my wolf had a name now, even if she hadn't told me what it was yet.

Around noon, a tray slid under my door. Broth. Bread. I recognized the bowl — plain ceramic, chipped on one side. Sera Voss used dishes like that. She was a senior she-wolf, ranked Delta, quiet and competent. She'd been one of the three who didn't laugh when Lance announced my Challenge.

I pulled the tray inside and ate slowly, cataloging scents through the gap under the door. Lance's cedar-and-iron was everywhere, but now it carried Vada's overlay — something floral and too sweet, like perfume sprayed over sweat. The compound smell of a fresh marking that had already settled.

My wolf stirred. Just once. A single rotation inside my ribs, like she was testing the space.

I set the empty bowl by the door and lay back down.

---

Vada came that evening.

I heard her before I saw her — heels clicking down the corridor, too loud for the Omega quarters. She wasn't alone. Two sets of lighter footsteps followed. Junior females, probably. An audience.

She stopped outside my door. Didn't knock. Just stood there long enough for me to sit up.

"Claire?" Her voice was warm. Performatively warm. "I wanted to check on you."

I didn't answer.

The door opened. She stepped inside, framed by the corridor light. The Luna mark on her neck was vivid — red and fresh, already starting to bruise purple at the edges. She wore a soft gray sweater that showed it off perfectly.

Behind her, two junior she-wolves hovered in the doorway. I recognized them. Mira and Joss. Both unmated. Both desperate to climb.

"I know this is hard," Vada said, tilting her head just slightly. Sympathetic. Practiced. "But I want you to know the pack will always have a place for you. Even without a wolf, you can contribute. Omegas work hard. They're valued."

She paused. Smiled.

"If you accept your rank."

Mira shifted behind her. I caught the scent of her discomfort — sour and sharp. She didn't want to be here. Joss, on the other hand, was soaking it in. Her eyes were bright. Hungry.

I looked at Vada. Not at the mark. At her face.

She held my gaze for three seconds. Then her smile thinned.

"Well," she said lightly. "I hope you find peace in your new circumstances."

She turned and walked out. Mira and Joss followed. The door stayed open. I listened to their footsteps fade, then got up and closed it myself.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist-scar. Hard.

My wolf vibrated. Not a howl. Not a whimper. Something older. Colder.

I went back to the cot and lay down facing the door.

---

I didn't sleep that night.

The bond-pain had dulled to a manageable ache — still there, still present, but no longer cresting in waves. I could breathe through it now.

Around two in the morning, pressure built behind my eyes. Slow. Steady. Like someone pressing thumbs into my temples from the inside.

I sat up. The room tilted slightly, then righted itself.

The pressure resolved into a vibration. The vibration resolved into language.

*'Claire.'*

I froze.

*'I have been here. Always.'*

The voice was female. Low. Familiar in a way I couldn't name.

*'The seal is cracking. He cracked it when he broke us.'*

My hands started shaking. I gripped the edge of the cot.

*'Tomorrow, when he comes for us — I will not let him touch you again.'*

The silver scar on my wrist flared. Bright. Hot. I looked down and watched it glow — not metaphorically, actually glow, a thin line of light tracing the old mark I'd carried my entire life without understanding.

It lasted maybe ten seconds. Then it faded.

The voice didn't come back.

I sat there in the dark, staring at my wrist, my wolf still vibrating inside me in that cold, old frequency.

I didn't sleep. I didn't need to.

---

Morning came slow.

I washed my face in the communal sink. Braided my hair. Put on the cleanest clothes I had — dark pants, a plain shirt, boots I'd worn through at the heels.

When I looked in the mirror, my reflection looked different. Not hollow anymore. Sharp.

I walked back to my room and sat on the cot, hands folded in my lap, and waited.

Outside, the pack was waking up. I heard voices in the corridor. Footsteps crossing the hall above. Somewhere distant, Lance's voice giving orders.

The challenge field would be set up by now. The circle drawn. The witnesses gathering.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist one more time.

The scar didn't glow. But my wolf hummed.

Not a sound. A promise.
