Chapter 2

They moved me to the Omega quarters three days after the ceremony.

The corridor was below ground level, where the pack house's foundation met damp stone and the air smelled like mildew and old fear. My room was the last door on the left—a cot, a lamp that flickered, a window too narrow for anything but grey light. I set my single bag on the floor and did not unpack it.

I had been counting. Seventy-two hours since the mark split open. Sixty-eight since my wolf went silent. Forty-three since I last ate something that stayed down.

I was washing my face at the communal basin when I heard them coming.

Five she-wolves. Milana in front, cream silk replaced by something darker and more practical. Daria at her shoulder—the senior one, the one whose eyes never left my hands. The others fanned out behind them, blocking the corridor exit without being told.

Milana stopped three feet from me and smiled. It was the same smile she'd worn in the front row, the one she'd practiced.

"You look tired," she said.

I straightened. Water dripped from my jaw onto my collar. "If you've come to check on me, you can report back that I'm fine."

"I haven't come to check." She tilted her head. "I've come to make something clear."

Daria moved before I could answer. She was fast—faster than I'd expected, or maybe I was slower than I used to be. Her hand locked around my left wrist. Another she-wolf grabbed my right. I yanked back, but there were too many of them and my wolf was a flat line inside me, no surge, no strength.

Daria pulled something from her pocket. Silver cuffs. The kind that closed with a snap.

I knew what they were the second I saw them. I twisted hard, drove my elbow into the ribs of the wolf holding my right arm. She grunted and her grip loosened, but Daria was already moving. The first cuff snapped shut around my left wrist.

The pain was immediate and total.

Silver doesn't burn werewolf skin the way fire burns—it's chemical, bone-deep, the kind of pain that makes your nervous system scream before your brain catches up. I heard myself make a sound I didn't recognize. My knees tried to buckle. The she-wolves holding me kept me upright.

Daria snapped the second cuff onto my right wrist.

I couldn't think. I couldn't breathe through it. My vision went white at the edges and I was dimly aware that I was pulling against them, wrenching my arms, trying to get the metal *off*—

Then the voice came through the mind-link.

Not a private channel. The pack-wide broadcast.

*"I, Weston, Alpha of Ironcliff, reject you, Aurelia, as my mate and Luna."*

His voice. Recorded. Played back at full volume inside every wolf's head in the pack house.

I heard it loop. Once. Twice. Three times.

The she-wolves were laughing. Not loud—low and satisfied, the way wolves laugh when they've cornered something and it can't run.

Milana leaned in close. "Everyone hears it now," she said softly. "Everyone knows exactly what you are."

I stopped pulling. I looked at her.

She blinked first.

I wrenched my left arm hard enough that the cuff tore skin. The she-wolf holding me stumbled. I drove my shoulder into Daria's sternum and she went back two steps. My wrists were on fire but I didn't stop. I swung my right arm into the nearest wolf's jaw and felt bone connect.

Then the corridor door opened and Weston walked in.

He looked at me first. At my wrists, red and blistering where the silver sat. At the she-wolves scattered around me, one holding her jaw, another catching her breath. At Milana, standing calm and untouched in the center of it all.

He looked at her for three seconds.

Then he looked back at me.

"Kneel," he said.

It wasn't a request. It was his Alpha tone—the one that bypassed thought and spoke directly to the part of a wolf that couldn't disobey.

My knees hit stone before I could stop them.

The remnant bond was still there. Cracked, cold, barely functional—but enough. Enough to force compliance. Enough to make my body a weapon he could turn against me.

I knelt in front of Milana with my burned wrists at my sides and my wolf silent inside me.

"Apologize to your Luna," Weston said.

My mouth opened. The words came out. I heard my own voice producing an apology I had not chosen, had not consented to, did not mean.

"I'm sorry," I said.

Milana's smile widened.

Every wolf in the corridor watched. No one moved. No one spoke.

Weston turned and left.

The compulsion released the moment he cleared the doorway. My muscles unlocked. I could breathe again.

I stood up.

I reached down with shaking, blistered hands and I stripped the silver cuffs off my own wrists. Skin came away with the metal—thin, wet strips that stuck to the silver and peeled free. I dropped the cuffs on the stone floor between Milana's feet.

I looked at the she-wolves in the corridor. At Daria. At Milana.

I looked at the wolves standing farther back, the ones who had heard the broadcast, who had watched me kneel, who had said nothing.

Then I walked.

Through the pack house. Across the training grounds. My wrists left a thin red trail on the dirt.

I reached the territory border at the eastern ridge just after dawn. The line was marked with stones and old scent—Ironcliff on one side, rogue land on the other.

I stepped across it.

The mind-link went silent. The pack's presence—that constant low hum of wolves breathing and moving and *being* together—cut off like a severed line.

I was alone.

My wolf was still quiet. My wrists were raw. The rejection scar pulsed cold on my neck.

I carried one guilt with me, sharper than the burns: Barnaby. The rogue pup I'd found last winter, the one I'd named and fed and kept hidden in the Omega quarters because Weston had threatened to destroy him. I'd left him behind.

I didn't look back.

I had Ironcliff's border corruption committed to memory—every falsified log, every back-gate envelope, every name Weston thought I hadn't noticed. I had no pack, no wolf, no mark that wasn't cracked.

But I had a weapon.

And I had nothing left to lose.
