Chapter 3

The archive room smelled like dust and old ink and the particular cold that only comes from stone walls that never see sun. I liked it for exactly that reason.

Four mornings in a row, I was there before anyone else stirred. The pack house was still dark, the corridors quiet except for the distant sound of the night patrol changing shifts. I had a key — one of the dozen administrative keys I had been given as Luna-in-waiting, keys that no one had thought to collect. That oversight would cost Graham more than he knew.

I spread the manifests across the table and started with the numbers.

The first discrepancy I had found the night of the storm. But one discrepancy is an error. What I was building now was a pattern.

Wolfsbane suppressants. Three months of shipments, logged under ceremonial supply allocation, signed with Graham's personal Alpha seal. The quantities were wrong — not slightly wrong, not rounding-error wrong. Triple the volume Ironclaw's healer had ever requisitioned in a single year. I cross-referenced against the official supply logs. The pack's medical inventory showed none of it. The shipments existed in the tribute manifests and nowhere else.

I followed the routing address.

It took two mornings to find it. A secondary location, no pack registry listing, no official designation. On the third morning I traced it to a property record buried in the territorial boundary filings — a private den, registered under a name I recognized.

Camille Reed.

I sat with that for a moment. Just a moment.

Then I took out my phone and photographed every page. My hands were perfectly still.

By the fourth morning I had what I needed. I slid the documents back into their original order, locked the cabinet, and walked out before the first Omega started the kitchen fires. The file in my room was getting thick. I pressed my thumb against my mark-site as I walked the corridor — that hollow place, that negative space — and felt, for the first time, something other than absence there. Something waiting.

I didn't know what it was yet. I filed it the same way I filed everything else. I would understand it when I understood it.

The pack-run was Graham's idea of a statement.

He organized it for the following Saturday — a joint run through the Hamptons woods, neighboring pack representatives invited to observe. A display. Camille at his side in her new flower crown, fresh blooms this time, the old ones having lasted less than a day. An Alpha presenting his chosen to the wider world, daring anyone to find the arrangement irregular.

I had every right to attend. No one had formally exiled me. The Omega demotion decree was in my file, not in pack law, and Graham knew better than to push that particular confrontation in front of outside witnesses. So I came.

I stayed to the outer edge of the formation and said nothing to anyone. I watched.

Camille was good at this. I had to give her that. She moved through the pack-run with the ease of someone who had been practicing the role in her head for years — probably because she had. She touched Graham's arm at the right moments. She laughed at the right volume. The flower crown was perfectly placed.

She maneuvered me toward the thicket so gradually I almost didn't track it.

Almost.

The formation shifted by degrees — a word here, a redirected path there, the subtle pressure of bodies moving in coordinated directions. By the time I understood what was happening, the edge of the trail was two feet to my left and the thicket was directly behind me. She had done it in front of a dozen wolves and made it look like nothing.

She shoved me with both hands.

The wolfsbane hit my palms first.

The pain was not like the bond-break. The bond-break had been internal, structural, a failure of something invisible. This was immediate and physical and absolute. The poison seared into my skin on contact — I felt it blacken, felt the tissue respond with a burning that went deeper than surface, climbing my forearms in waves that made my vision white at the edges. I was on my knees in the thicket before I registered that I had fallen.

My hands were shaking. For the first time in seven years, I could not stop them.

Graham was three feet away. He had Camille's wrist in his hands, examining a graze on her palm — a graze so theatrical it barely broke the skin. He was murmuring something to her. His eyes did not come to me.

The pack-run had gone still. A dozen wolves standing in frozen witness, and not one of them moved.

The poison climbed. My palms were dark now, the skin angry and permanent-looking in a way that told me, with cold clarity, that these marks would not heal clean. I pressed them flat against my thighs and tried to breathe.

And then something opened.

Not outside me. Inside. Deep and old and vast, like a door in a room I had never been allowed to enter. A voice — not a sound, more like a frequency — spoke my name. Not Selene. Something older than Selene. Something that had been waiting beneath seven years of silence and scent-suppression and deliberate erasure, waiting with the patience of something that knew it could not be permanently buried.

A wolf.

Silver-eyed. Luminous. Larger than anything I had ever felt move beneath my skin.

She opened her eyes and looked out through mine.

The air in the clearing changed. I felt it before I understood it — a pressure shift, a weight, the particular quality of silence that falls when every animal in a space simultaneously recognizes something above them in the hierarchy. The wolves around me went still in a different way than before. Not frozen by shock. Stilled by instinct.

Graham's hand was raised. I don't know when he raised it — whether to strike, whether to issue a command, whether it was a reflex toward the aura now radiating off me like heat off stone. It didn't matter. The hand was up and it was not moving.

Camille's flower crown wilted. Not slowly. All at once, the blooms going slack and brown at the edges as if the air around her had changed temperature.

Silver light was cracking behind my eyes. I could feel it the way you feel a light turned on in the next room — present, undeniable, not yet fully mine.

I did not understand what was happening.

But she did. The wolf beneath my skin. She understood completely.

And she was not muted anymore.
