Chapter 4

The rogue-transit outpost was three miles past the border stones, tucked behind an abandoned human gas station. It smelled like damp cedar, spilled diesel, and old iron.

My right ankle throbbed with every heartbeat, but Maren’s splint held. I dragged myself inside the drafty shed and sat at a scarred wooden picnic bench. Through the cracked window, the eastern woods blurred beneath gray drizzle.

I reached up and pressed my thumb against the dead patch of skin on my neck. Cold. Lifeless.

Then, I closed my eyes and reached toward a private channel in my mind I hadn’t touched in seven years.

A silver thread, buried under layers of black-market suppressants. It led straight back to the Silvercrest royal intelligence network. To a woman named Sable Ashford, whose sole standing order from my mother was to track my coordinates and stay back unless I broke protocol.

I sent only four words through the link:

*Jude was poisoned. Come.*

I didn't ask for rescue. I didn't ask for an extraction team. I didn't need pity; I needed ammunition.

While I waited, I found a flat pencil stub and three blank order slips on the counter. My hand moved automatically, writing in the neat, shorthand clinical notation Maren had taught me over years in the packhouse dispensary:

*Subject: Kaylee Fisher.*

*Scent maintenance: 48-hour half-life. High-grade synthetic Alpha-lineage compound.*

*Behavioral baseline: Uniform emotional register. Fixed micro-expressions.*

*Toxin: Aconitum ferox (wild eastern variety). Pack storage holds only 40% domestic.*

Two hours later, the gravel outside crunched under heavy boots.

The door swung open. A tall she-wolf stepped out of the rain, shaking water from the shoulders of a dark utility coat. Beneath the collar, I caught the faint, matte-silver glint of the Silvercrest crest pin. Her face was sharp, scarred near the brow, and completely devoid of fear.

"Charlotte," she said, her voice low and even. "I'm Sable Ashford. Lead field operative for Lycan Prince Caelan."

She didn't bow. She didn't drop to a knee. She pulled out a heavy manila folder bound with black tape and laid it flat on the wood between us.

"We've been tracking her since she left the Black Ridge pack eight months ago," Sable said, leaning forward on her knuckles.

I flipped the folder open.

There were high-resolution photographs, bank routing numbers, and counterfeit lineage certificates. Three previous packs. In each one, Kaylee had appeared with an Alpha-daughter scent, ingratiated herself with the ruling heir, drained pack treasuries, and vanished right before a Lycan blood audit.

"A predator with a playbook," I murmured.

"She moves fast once the mate is rejected," Sable said. "She usually bleeds the reserve treasury within three weeks of consolidation."

I reached into my right boot.

First came the folded brown paper towel from the kitchen. Then the jagged shard of Jude’s bowl, crusted with dark eastern residue. Finally, I set down Healer Maren’s glass vial, its green wax seal gleaming under the low ceiling bulb. Beside them, I slid my handwritten notes.

Sable picked up the vial. She turned it under the light, her thumb brushing the raised imprint of the Ironmaw crest.

"The Ironmaw pack healer sealed this?" Sable asked quietly.

"Under sworn oath," I said. "Ninety-four percent purity. Wild strain from our eastern ridge. She knows Landon silenced my link while Jude seized."

Sable’s jaw tightened. She closed the folder over the evidence with a crisp snap.

"The Prince has the file. But paper isn't enough to override an Alpha's territorial sovereign rights," she said, looking right into my eyes. "We need you at the tribunal."

Before I could answer, the radio transceiver clipped to Sable's chest gave a sharp double-beep. She tapped an earpiece, listening in silence for ten seconds. Her face remained carved from stone, but her eyes darkened.

"Ironmaw morning comms," Sable said, looking up at me. "Audio intercept from the packhouse great hall."

She clicked a button on the handheld receiver and set it on the table. Landon's voice crackled through the small speaker, carrying that booming, hollow confidence I had endured for seven years.

*“...border security will immediately double under Lady Kaylee's administrative oversight,”* Landon's voice echoed. *“The peace this pack enjoyed for seven years was built by Ironmaw steel and my command. We cut out the weak link. Now, our strength belongs only to us.”*

A burst of polite warrior applause rattled through the speaker, but underneath it, a sharp static murmur caught my ear.

*"Did you see Maren's face?"* an intercept whisper came through the feed, Gamma Dennis’s rough tone clear as day. *"She refused to applaud. And Beta Theo walked out the side door before the speech finished."*

"Kaylee took over the treasury communications an hour ago," Sable told me, her voice flat. "And she moved her quarters to the suite adjoining Landon's."

I didn't care about the suites. I didn't care about Landon’s stolen glory.

Then the radio chirped again. A field scout's voice cut through the line, rapid and urgent:

*"Ashford, update from the inner wing. The boy. Alpha's mother just signed a transfer order. Jude has been removed from the infirmary. They moved him to Emiliana’s private quarters under 'family recovery protocol.' Healer Maren was barred at the threshold."*

My breath stopped.

They had locked my five-year-old child inside Emiliana’s locked rooms. Away from medical monitors. Away from independent witnesses. Where any relapse could be smothered in silence and blamed on my genetics.

"Charlotte?" Sable warned.

Deep in my chest, the cage didn't just rattle—it tore free from the bone.

A white-hot eruption ripped through my bloodstream. The suppressants I had taken for seven years didn't dissolve; they vaporized like water dropped onto molten iron.

*Crack.*

My ribs expanded with a savage, violent snap. I buckled forward against the table, both hands gripping the rough pine so hard the wood groaned and split beneath my palms. A low, inhuman snarl tore from my throat, vibrating the very dust on the floorboards.

The room’s air pressure plummeted.

My vision washed out in a blinding, terrifying flood of predatory silver-gold. The raw, ancient Lycan aura bled off my skin in visible waves, rolling across the room like a cold thunderstorm.

Sable didn't draw a weapon. She backed up two full paces, her instincts forcing her chin down, her throat bared half an inch before she caught herself. Her chest rose and fell in short, sharp breaths.

"Hold it," Sable whispered, her voice tight with strain. "Charlotte, look at me. Hold it. Not here."

I clamped my jaw shut until blood coated my tongue, dragging my claws out of the wood. I forced the burning beast backward, inch by agonizing inch, into the dark recesses of my chest.

The silver-gold faded from my eyes, leaving behind a cold, lethal hazel.

I stood straight, my breathing slow and steady.

Sable didn't say a word about my eyes. She didn't say a word about the aura that had just bowed her head.

With steady fingers, she pulled out a slate-gray encrypted comm-link, dialed Prince Caelan's private frequency, and pressed send.

"Ashford to Silvercrest command," she said into the mic, never taking her gaze off me. "Update the timeline. She’s close to shifting. We need the tribunal convened now."
