Chapter 3

I was three days into organizing the Lycan medical archives when the bond flickered.

Not pain. Not the contempt Chase had poured through it like poison the night he shoved me. Something else. A jolt. Sharp and sudden, like a wire snapping taut inside my chest. I was halfway up a ladder, reaching for a box of pre-war surgical records, and my hand missed the shelf. I caught myself on the rung and held very still.

The bond had been silent since I left Ironveil. Static. A dead frequency still plugged in but transmitting nothing. I had learned to work around it the way you work around a broken bone — carefully, without testing the edges.

This was different.

I climbed down slowly and pressed two fingers to the scar at my throat. The mark was still cracked, still cold. But something had moved on the other end of the line. Not toward me. Away from me. A recoil. Like he'd touched something that burned him.

I stood in the archive room and waited for more. Nothing came. Just that one sharp flicker, and then silence again.

I went back to the ladder.

Julian found me an hour later, still sorting records. He knocked once on the open door and stepped inside, holding a tray with tea and something that looked like bread but smelled like herbs.

'You've been in here since dawn,' he said.

'The filing system makes no sense,' I said without looking down. 'Whoever organized this was sorting by date instead of injury type.'

'That was me,' Julian said mildly. 'Twelve years ago.'

I paused. Looked down at him. His expression was perfectly even.

'It makes no sense,' I repeated.

He smiled — a small, dry thing. 'I know. I was twenty-three and thought chronological order was elegant. You have my permission to burn it all down and start over.'

I climbed down and took the tea. It was still hot. He'd timed it.

'The senior medics are talking,' he said after a moment. 'About the silver-fragment case. About the compress modification.' He paused. 'They want to know if you'll teach the technique.'

I looked at him over the rim of the cup. 'They declined the case.'

'They did,' he agreed. 'And now they want to learn from the healer who didn't.'

I considered that. The politics underneath it. The careful phrasing. Julian was giving me a choice, not an expectation.

'I'll write up the protocol,' I said. 'They can read it and decide for themselves.'

He nodded once, satisfied, and left me to my tea and my terrible filing system.

I didn't tell him about the flicker in the bond. There was nothing to tell yet. Just a single sharp pull, and then nothing.

I drank the tea and went back to work.

***

The second flicker came that night.

I was in my quarters — small, clean, mine — reviewing surgical notes by candlelight. The bond jolted again, harder this time. Not pain. Not contempt. Something rawer. Panic. Grief. The shape of a wolf howling inside a man's chest.

I set down my pen and pressed both hands flat on the desk.

The bond was still silent. But the quality of the silence had changed. It wasn't static anymore. It was the silence of someone holding their breath. Waiting. Listening.

I closed my eyes and reached carefully toward the bond — not to open it, not to invite anything through, but to test the edges. To see what was there.

On the other end, I felt Chase's wolf. Not dormant. Not raging. Grieving. A low, steady howl that didn't need sound to be heard. And underneath it, faint but unmistakable, the first thin thread of understanding.

He knew.

I didn't know what he knew yet. Not the details. But something had cracked open in him the way the mark had cracked open in me, and he was finally, finally looking at what was underneath.

I pulled my awareness back and let the bond go silent again.

My hands were steady. My wolf was quiet. I picked up my pen and went back to my notes.

Whatever he had found, it was too late. The wound had already closed wrong. You can't re-set a bone that's healed crooked without breaking it again first.

And I was done breaking.

***

The third flicker came four days later, and this time it wasn't a flicker at all.

I was in the surgical wing, reviewing a new case with Julian, when the bond slammed open like a door kicked in. Not pain. Not contempt. Desperation. Raw, clawing, frantic desperation, and underneath it the shape of my own name being howled into a void that didn't answer.

I staggered. Caught the edge of the table. Julian's hand closed on my elbow.

'Evie—'

'I'm fine,' I said. My voice came out steady. Clinical. 'Give me a moment.'

I pressed my palm flat against the scar at my throat and breathed slowly through my nose. The bond was wide open now, transmitting everything. Chase's wolf was running. I could feel the rhythm of it — four-pawed, full sprint, branches whipping past, the burn in his lungs. He was tracking something. Tracking me.

I could feel the moment he lost my scent. The moment it dissolved into nothing at the edge of Lycan territory. The moment he realized where I had gone.

The bond flooded with something I had never felt from him before. Not anger. Not contempt. Fear. Pure, sick, helpless fear.

I closed my eyes and pulled the bond shut from my end. Not gently. I slammed it closed the way he had slammed open my healer's den, the way he had shoved me into the wall. I felt him hit the other side of it like a body hitting a locked door.

When I opened my eyes, Julian was still holding my elbow. His face was carefully blank.

'I'm fine,' I said again.

He let go slowly. 'If you need—'

'I don't,' I said.

He nodded and stepped back. We returned to the case file. My hands did not shake.

But I knew, with the cold certainty of a healer reading vitals, that Chase was standing somewhere beyond the Lycan border right now, staring at towers he couldn't enter, holding a bond that no longer answered.

And I knew he would not stop there.

Men like Chase never stopped. They escalated. They demanded. They broke things until the breaking forced an answer.

I had four walls, a surgical wing, and a prince's protection between us now.

It would not be enough.

I turned the page in the case file and kept reading.
