Chapter 1

The bond cracked at 6:47 in the evening, in the dying gold light between the pines, and the sound was mine alone.

I heard it before I felt it — a thin, wet snap, like a wire pulled too tight inside my throat. Then the pain arrived. Claws opened the skin across my neck in three clean lines, straight through the mate mark Chase Maddox had put on me five years ago under a harvest moon. My knees folded before my mind caught up. The dirt came up fast. Warm blood filled the collar of my healer's tunic and pooled under my ear.

I remember exactly what I saw from the ground.

Chase was ten feet away. He had been beside me a second before, his shoulder brushing mine as we advanced on the rogue enclave. Now he was in the clearing, on his knees, his broad back curved over Saylor Fox like a shield. Both arms wrapped around her. His nose in her hair. The rogue who cut me stepped over my body to reach him, and Chase didn't turn. He didn't turn for the wet gurgle I made trying to say his name. He didn't turn when the bond flared white-hot and then went cold — my mark first, then the space behind my sternum where his warmth used to sit. Cold. Then empty. Like a door closing on a room no one lived in anymore.

My wolf, quiet and small her whole life, lifted her head inside me and did not whimper. She growled.

Then a body hit the ground beside me — Duskvale colors, gray and green. Gamma Rhett. Scarred face, no wasted movement. He hooked one arm under my shoulders and dragged. I remember the sound of my own heels cutting furrows in the dirt. I remember his voice, low and flat above me: "I saw. Stay with me, healer. I saw."

I passed out before we cleared the treeline. The last thing my eyes tracked was Chase, still cradling her.

I woke in the Ironveil healer's den. My den. I knew it by the smell of yarrow and the crack in the ceiling beam I'd been meaning to have fixed for two winters. Bandages wrapped my neck to the jaw. When I swallowed, something inside the wound clicked wrong.

My hand went first to the bedside table. Not to water. Not to the bell. To the small carved dish where my mother's moonstone pendant had rested every night for twenty-three years.

Empty.

I stared at the dish for a long time. The bond in my chest transmitted nothing — not silence exactly, but static, the sound of a broken line still plugged in.

Then the corridor exploded with sobbing.

"She attacked me, Chase — she was — she was in here waiting for me — look, look what she did — "

Saylor's voice. Wet and cracking in all the practiced places. Through the open doorway I could see her pressed against Chase's chest, one arm held up to show him a thin, clean scratch that any second-year healer would recognize as self-inflicted. The angle was wrong. The depth was wrong. She had done it with her own nails.

My wolf did not weep. She sharpened.

Chase looked past Saylor's shoulder and found me on the cot. His eyes were amber and full of something I had never seen aimed at me before. Contempt. Not doubt. Not the confusion of a man being lied to. Directed, aimed contempt.

He crossed the room in three strides.

His hands closed on my shoulders and pulled me upright, and the wound in my neck tore. I felt the bandage soak through in a hot rush. He shoved. My back hit the cot, my head hit the wall, and blood ran down my collarbone and dripped, tap tap tap, onto the stone floor between us.

He stood over me. His shadow covered my body.

"Touch her again," he said, and his Alpha tone dropped through me like a stone through water, forcing my spine flat, forcing my wolf's ears down, "and I will put you in the Omega quarters."

The bond flooded. Not with anger. Not with the heat of a man who'd been fooled. With contempt — cold, weighted, deliberate — poured through the cracked mark into me like he was emptying a bucket.

I held his eyes. I did not beg. My healer's mind was already working: torn suture line, secondary hemorrhage minor, bond sigil fractured across the caudal third, contempt signature clean and unshared with doubt — meaning he believes her, meaning he chose this before he walked through the door.

I said nothing. Silence, I had learned in five years of watching him, was the one thing he could not answer.

He waited for me to break. When I didn't, he turned and left. Saylor's sob followed him out, pitched perfectly.

***

I waited until the den was dark.

Then I opened the locked drawer under the cot and took out the braid. Two colors of fur, his and mine, plaited the night he pulled me out of the collapsed den at fifteen and swore over it to shield me with his life. I held it over the candle. The fur caught, curled, hissed. I watched every strand until it was ash on my palm.

I blew the ash onto the floor beside my own drying blood.

Then I reached under the mattress for the encoded frequency Alden Voss had left open three years ago, after I'd dug him out of the rubble and pulled silver from his ribs. One channel. Never used.

I keyed it once.

The answer came in four minutes. Three words.

*Say where. Coming.*

I typed the coordinates of the side gate with a hand that did not shake, gathered my healer's satchel, the vial of my own blood I had drawn while waiting, and the memory of every word Chase had spoken standing over me.

At the door I paused only once — to look back at the empty dish where my mother's pendant should have been.

Somewhere in the Alpha quarters, through a wall and down a corridor, I heard Saylor laugh.
