Chapter 5

Smoke rolled across the ceiling in a slow black tide, and still Kamden didn't move toward me. He stood with Lucy limp against his chest, her lashes fluttering in a performance so practiced I almost admired it, and around us his warriors shoved toward the doors, shoulders slamming, wolves half-shifted and screaming in throats too human to hold the sound.

He looked at me across all of it. And something in his face settled, the way a man's face settles when he's already made a decision and is only now getting around to saying it out loud.

"I, Kamden, Alpha of Shadowvale Pack," he said, and his voice came out wrapped in Alpha-tone, pitched to carry over fire and panic and every wolf left standing, "reject you, Ruby Carlson, as my mate and Luna."

The words hit the mark on my throat like a fist closing.

I felt the bond go first—not fade, not fray the way it had for three slow years, but detonate, a white-hot collapse behind my sternum that folded me forward onto my knees before I understood I was falling. My palms hit the scorched floor. The mark burned ice-cold, then hollow, then nothing at all, a socket where something had lived my whole adult life and now didn't.

I couldn't scream. I never could. But my mouth opened anyway, and through smoke thick enough to taste, I shaped the only answer a rejection like that could take.

*I accept.*

No sound came out. It didn't need to. I felt it land somewhere, felt the bond's last thread snap taut and then gone, severed clean on both ends.

Kamden turned his back on me.

He carried Lucy toward the doors, his warriors closing rank around him, and I watched the space where my mate had stood collapse into empty air and smoke. The doors shut. I heard the bar drop into place from the outside—whether by accident or design, I would never know, and in that moment I didn't care.

I knelt alone in the burning hall.

And something else happened.

The weight lifted.

I hadn't known it was weight until it was gone—a pressure I'd carried so long I'd mistaken it for the shape of my own body, gone in the space between one ragged breath and the next. In its place, something vast turned over in the dark part of my mind. Not the small, frightened stirring I'd felt in the kennels, in the kitchen, in every insult I'd fed it like meat through bars. Something old. Something with room in it for the whole burning hall and more.

It moved once.

Then my body was moving too, dragging itself across the floor on hands and knees toward the east wall, toward the collapsed vent shaft I'd marked in my head three nights ago without knowing why. Eloise's letters pressed flat against my ribs, wax seal biting into my skin. The ceiling groaned above me, a sound like the whole building deciding something.

I pulled myself into the shaft as it came down.

Dark, narrow, metal shrieking against metal, and I clawed forward on elbows and knees while heat rolled over my back in a wave that should have killed me and somehow didn't. When I came out the other side into cold night air, the pack house was already a column of orange light behind me, and I ran until the glow was only a smear through the trees, until my legs gave out and the ground came up to meet me.

Maren's people found me before the sun did.

I surfaced slow, the way you climb out of water that doesn't want to let you go. Maren knelt beside my cot, and she wasn't working—no herbs, no hands pressed to my throat checking pulse or breath. Her head was bowed, and for a moment I thought she was praying.

I looked at my own hands. The wolfsbane scars were still there, white and ropy across my knuckles. My throat still felt like a fist had closed around it and never let go.

But my chest was roaring.

I reached for the notebook out of pure habit, fingers finding nothing, and before I could look for it my wolf surged up from that dark, vast place all at once, and my spine arched off the cot with a crack that didn't sound like any bone I remembered owning.

I shifted.

It tore through me sideways, bones reforming into a shape too large for the room, fur erupting silver-white under my skin, and Maren scrambled back with her hand pressed to her mouth, already weeping, already on her knees.

When it was over, I stood on four legs that didn't feel like mine and didn't feel like any wolf's—too tall, too heavy, the air in the den pressing down like something with weight and will.

A voice moved through me, full and ancient, resonant in a way my own throat had never been.

*Hello, Ruby,* it said. *I have been waiting a very long time.*
