Chapter 4

The summons came at eight in the morning, slipped under my door on a folded piece of pack-house stationery. *Mandatory Omega wellness check. Healer's office. 0900.* No signature. I knew Ivy's hand in it before I finished reading.

I dressed slowly. Loose tunic. My scarred palms flat against my belly for a moment, a promise I couldn't yet speak aloud.

The healer's office was on the ground floor, three doors down from the common room. When I walked in, she was already there — the same quiet woman who had treated my bruises for three years without ever asking who put them there. She nodded once and gestured to the examination table.

I sat. She began the assessment.

The door opened without a knock.

Ivy came in first, then two she-wolves I recognized from the banquet — one of them a cousin of Whitney Sorrel's. They arranged themselves against the far wall like an audience.

"I hope we're not interrupting," Ivy said, warm as tea. "I just wanted to make sure the healer understands her obligations. Given the circumstances."

The healer did not look up from her clipboard.

"You are, of course, aware," Ivy continued, drifting closer to the table, "that any medical findings involving pack welfare are subject to Alpha reporting. Yes? Especially concerning parentage of a — a questionable pregnancy."

One of the she-wolves made a small sound behind her hand.

The healer set the clipboard down. "I report medical findings to the Alpha upon formal written authorization. Which I have not received."

"Well," Ivy said, "I'm sure Maverick would want—"

"I have not received it."

I kept my hands flat on my thighs. The paper gown rustled every time I breathed. Ivy took another step toward the table, close enough now that I could smell the cedar-and-smoke undernote beneath her jasmine — sharper today, adrenaline threading through it.

She wanted me to flinch. To cover myself. To beg the healer for privacy in front of witnesses who would carry the story to Maverick before lunch.

I looked at the healer. "Do your job."

The healer picked up her clipboard.

She conducted the exam without comment — measured, professional, clinical. She asked me to lie back. She palpated gently. She listened. When she was finished, she made three notes and set the pen down.

"Findings are confidential pending authorization," she said, to the room.

Ivy's smile stayed in place. Her scent did not. "Of course," she said. "Thank you for your diligence."

She left. The witnesses trailed after her. I sat on the table with the paper gown crinkling around my knees and watched the door close.

The healer did not look at me. She capped her pen. "You may dress," she said quietly. And then, softer, almost inaudible: "Take care of yourself, Tessa."

I dressed. I walked out. By the time I reached the basement, the witnesses were already upstairs in the common room, and I could hear the pitch of their voices through the vents — high, excited, spilling everything.

He came for me the next morning.

I was carrying a stack of ledgers down the corridor to the archive when Maverick stepped out of the alcove near the stairwell and blocked my path. Alone. No Deltas. No Ivy trailing behind him like a second shadow. Just him.

"Tessa."

I stopped. The ledgers were heavy in my arms. I did not set them down.

He looked older this close. Or maybe just tired in a way ceremony had been hiding. His voice, when he spoke, was stripped of the platform he'd been standing on since the rejection.

"You have until the end of the week," he said. "Come forward with the father's name. Voluntarily. Or I will bring you before the elders and I will extract it."

I let the silence sit for a moment. Long enough that his jaw tightened.

I met his eyes. I looked at the man I had marked myself for at eighteen — at the shape of a face I had once traced in the dark — and I did not find him there. Only a stranger wearing his features like a borrowed coat.

"You were never careful," I said, "with information you were given."

Something flickered behind his eyes. I stepped around him. He did not stop me. I heard him not move for a long moment as I walked away — heard the specific quality of stillness that meant he was still standing there, watching my back, watching the loose shirt that hid what he had replaced me with.

I did not turn.

That night, I lay on my cot in the dark and pressed my palm to Miller's mark.

*He gave me until the end of the week.*

Miller's voice came through immediate, unhurried. *I know. Guards are positioned. Investigators ready. The certificate is with my Beta.*

*The allied packs?*

*Three inquiries logged. Ivy's contact intercepted at the border.*

I closed my eyes. Let the bond hold me for a moment — the warm, steady weight of him on the other end of it.

*Will the pup be safe?*

His answer did not hesitate.

*Nothing in that building will touch either of you.*

I let the link fall closed. Placed both hands over my belly. In the dark, my wolf stirred faintly — not the tortured writhing of the last weeks, but something quieter. A slow, patient uncoiling. Anticipation.

I let myself feel it.

Somewhere above me, on the pack-house second floor, I heard the archive door open. Footsteps crossed the room. Stopped. A long silence. Then footsteps again, faster this time, retreating.

Ivy had found the archive. She had found it in perfect order.

I smiled once in the dark and went to sleep.
