Chapter 1

The rejection vow hit me at 7:42 in the evening, in front of forty-three wolves who used to call me Luna.

Maverick stood on the dais where he used to stand beside me. Ivy was on his arm, her fingers curled possessively into his sleeve, her scent — jasmine gone sour with ambition — layered over his skin like a second coat of fur. I could smell her on him from across the hall. Three years dead, and he still smelled like mine underneath her.

"I, Maverick Ellis, Alpha of Ironveil Pack," he said, and his voice carried the ceremonial weight he'd practiced, "reject you, Tessa Crawford, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold first — a sudden absence where warmth used to live, like a hand pulled off skin. Then it went hollow, like a door closing on an empty room. My wolf howled once inside my skull, a single raw sound, and then she went silent. Not sleeping. Silent. My vision whited out at the edges. I did not fall.

"Ivy Jimenez will stand as my Luna," Maverick continued, and the hall exhaled a collective breath that was almost a cheer. "Tessa Crawford will accept her station as Omega, or she will leave this pack as a rogue."

Forty-three faces turned to watch me break.

I pressed my scarred palms flat against my thighs, felt the old silver-burned ridges bite into my own skin, and let that pain anchor me instead. "I accept the rejection," I said. Flat. Even. I did not raise my voice because raising it would have given them a reason to think I needed to.

Then I turned and walked out. I did not look back. Behind me, I heard Ivy's soft, satisfied exhale — the sound of a woman who thought silence meant surrender.

That night, alone in the basement, I sat on my cot and pressed two fingers to the dead spot on my neck. Nothing. I slid my collar aside and touched Miller's mark instead — warm, steady, alive, a heartbeat under my fingertips that had nothing to do with Ironveil at all. The contrast nearly undid me. I didn't weep. I sent three words down the mind-link instead. *He came back.*

*I know,* Miller answered, immediate, absolute. *Hold.*

I held.

Two days later Ivy came to my door wearing the Luna's silver circlet, her voice modulated into something that passed for kindness. "I hope we can move forward peacefully, Tessa." I said nothing. She left believing my silence was surrender. It was inventory.

That night I worked the archive by lamplight — supply logs, wolfsbane inventories, patrol records from the week of the ambush, three years of altered entries I catalogued from memory alone. I copied what mattered, sealed it in a waterproof envelope, and tucked it behind the loose stone in the wall. Evidence. Leverage. A card no one at Ironveil knew I was holding.

The banquet came four days later. I carried platters between tables that used to be set for me, and I felt Ivy's whispers moving through the hall before I heard the words — something about my loose clothing, my scent carrying something unfamiliar underneath it.

Whitney Sorrel's eyes caught the swell beneath my tunic before I could turn away. "She's *pregnant*," she said, too loud, and the hall went dead quiet, then loud in a different way.

Maverick rose from the head table. His aura flared — wounded pride, not concern. "A disgrace," he said, his voice pitched to carry, "to the bond we once had."

I held his gaze for three full seconds. Then I set the platter down and walked out, unhurried, spine straight, while forty pairs of eyes waited for me to shatter.

Outside the hall doors, my hands started shaking so hard I had to press them flat against the cold stone wall to stop it.

And underneath the shaking, something else moved — deeper, older, a pulse I hadn't felt in three years, like a creature stirring once beneath drugged sleep before going still again.

My wolf. Just for a second.

Behind the doors, I heard Ivy's voice rising above the murmurs, already spinning the moment into something sharper. "I always suspected," she was telling them, "that it wasn't a pack wolf at all."
