When My Alpha Chose Her, I Chose Myself Novel Cover

When My Alpha Chose Her, I Chose Myself

My mate, Alpha Nathan Lynch, renowned for his expertise in healing rare diseases, gave the only dose of a groundbreaking medication to Siena Hawkins, a Delta in our pack who suffers from the same rare blood disease I do. On the brink of death, I watched as he made the choice to save her without a moment’s hesitation. As I lay there, blood pouring from my mouth, feeling the shadow of death closing in, intrusive thoughts flickered through my mind: *Don’t blame Nathan; Siena once made sacrifices for him. She gave up a pregnancy for him. He’s just trying to repay her by giving her the medicine.* *This is a tragic story with an inevitable ending for the heroine. But Nathan will eventually realize his mistake.* I found it absurd. Should I die just to make an Alpha see the light? I couldn’t accept such a fate. As an Omega, I had always been at the bottom of the pack hierarchy, but I refused to let that define my end. Nathan held Siena tenderly, his Alpha aura radiating concern as he asked, “Are you feeling any side effects after taking the medication?” Meanwhile, I was on the floor, coughing up blood, every inch of my body in agony.

Chapter 4

I unlocked my phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I saw the notification on WhatsApp. Siena had posted something.

It was a picture of a heart-shaped spiced honey cake, with a man’s hand slicing through it.

"Happy Thanksgiving. I’m really grateful today because I know I have a future ahead," the caption read.

On the man’s ring finger was a silver band engraved with the insignia of the pack—a mark of commitment. I instantly recognized the hand. It was Alpha Nathan’s.

In the five years we were mated, we never celebrated Thanksgiving together. He always brushed it off with that dismissive tone of his, "What’s the big deal about Thanksgiving? Aren’t we together every day?"

I let out a bitter laugh, realizing how naive I had been. All those years, loving a man like him. An Alpha who could crush me with a single word, yet I’d thought I was special.

"Now you know heartbreak, don’t you? Serves you right. If you hadn’t asked to reject the bond, he wouldn’t be spending Thanksgiving with her," a voice sneered in my mind.

"This is the first time I’ve disliked a heroine so much. She’s so melodramatic."

"I don’t even want the Alpha to regret leaving her. She doesn’t deserve it."

Regret later? Do they think that’s some sort of consolation prize for me? It’s the last thing I want.

I lay in my hospital bed for what felt like forever before Alpha Nathan finally opened the door and strode in.

The strong scent of jasmine—Siena’s scent—filled the room immediately. There was a faint red mark on his collarbone, barely visible beneath his open collar.

The eternally immaculate Alpha now had the evidence of his indiscretion written plainly on him.

I blinked, trying to understand what he was signaling. Was he showing me this on purpose?

"Do you realize your mistake?" he said, his voice icy, the alpha tone lacing his words with authority.

"Maeve, it’s not like I don’t have wolves interested in me. If you start acting out again, I won’t put up with it."

"Finally, the Alpha is putting the foolish Omega in her place."

"He should be like this. Otherwise, she’d think she was indispensable."

"For the first time, I’m okay with the Alpha being a jerk."

A slow-burning anger began to build inside me. Why does everyone think it’s my fault? What exactly have I done wrong? Must I resign myself to a tragic fate, just because I’m an Omega?

"Why aren’t you saying anything?" Alpha Nathan’s tone softened slightly, though it still carried the weight of his rank.

"Don’t blame me for being harsh; you really crossed the line today."

"We’ve been mated for so many years. How can you casually mention rejecting the bond?"

"Maeve, I’ve treated you well all these years. I don’t know what else you could be unhappy about."

Each word felt like a needle piercing my eardrums. My ears were buzzing, unable to take in any more.

Then, with a sudden "splat," blood splattered again, staining Alpha Nathan’s white shirt red.

His pupils shrank abruptly as he rushed over to hold me, his voice shaking, "Maeve, don’t scare me. What’s happening to you?"

I could feel my wolf whimpering in the back of my mind, weak and barely audible. She’d been silent for so long, her voice a faint echo of what it once was.

"You’re stronger than this," she whispered, though her voice was barely a thread. "Don’t let him break you."

But I wasn’t sure if I believed her anymore. Not when the man who was supposed to protect me, to cherish me as his mate, had chosen someone else.

Alpha Nathan’s arms tightened around me, his scent—once comforting, now tainted with Siena’s jasmine—overwhelming me. "Maeve, I’m here. I’ll fix this," he said, though his words felt hollow.

I closed my eyes, the pain in my chest not just from the disease but from the bond that felt like it was tearing me apart.

And for the first time, I wondered if I could truly heal—not just from the illness, but from the wounds he’d inflicted on my soul.

The ballroom of the Hamilton Pack House was suffocating, despite the grand double doors thrown open to the cool night air. Crystal chandeliers dripped light onto the polished floors, illuminating the sea of wolves dressed in their finest silks and suits. They were here to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the alliance between the Hamiltons and the Hunters—and, unofficially, to whisper about the heir growing inside me. I rested a hand on the swell of my belly, wincing as a sharp kick radiated against my ribs. My ankles were swollen in these ridiculous heels, and my back ached with a dull, persistent throb. But as the Luna of the Hunter Moon Pack and the daughter of Alpha Hamilton, I had a role to play. I had to be the glowing, happy wife. "Where are you, Lucas?" I murmured, scanning the crowd. My eyes snagged on my father, Alpha Hamilton, laughing too loudly near the buffet. He held a glass of champagne in one hand, his other resting possessively on the lower back of a woman whose face I couldn't quite see.

The Blue Moon hung heavy and luminous in the night sky, casting silver light across the ceremonial grounds. I stood before the full-length mirror in my chambers, smoothing down the white silk dress my mother had commissioned months ago for this exact moment. The fabric clung to my curves, elegant and pure—the perfect dress for a Luna-to-be. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, practically purring with anticipation. Tonight. Finally, tonight. "You look beautiful, sweetheart," my father said from the doorway, his Alpha presence filling the room with warmth. Marcus Patterson, leader of the Crescent Moon Pack, looked at me with such pride that my chest tightened. "Do you think he'll finally do it?" I whispered, hating how vulnerable I sounded. "Mark me?" Dad's expression softened.

The ceremonial white gown flowed around my body like liquid moonlight as I stood in the grand hall of Silver Ridge Pack. My fingers trembled slightly as I smoothed the delicate fabric, my heart racing with anticipation. Today was supposed to be the pinnacle of my five years with Ryan—our mate ceremony would finally bind us completely. "Are you ready, my Luna?" Elder Marian's weathered hands adjusted my silver circlet, her eyes crinkling with maternal pride. I nodded, unable to find words through the lump of emotion in my throat. Inside me, my wolf Aria purred with contentment. *Finally, finally, we'll be truly his.* The hall buzzed with activity as pack members arranged ceremonial candles around the sacred bonfire pit. Flower garlands perfumed the air, their scent mingling with the woodsmoke. My father, Alpha Richard Walsh, stood tall by the ceremonial altar, his powerful presence commanding respect even in this moment of celebration. "Victoria." His voice softened as he approached.

I told myself I was fine. I'd been telling myself that for eight years, so by now I was pretty good at it. The bonfire was enormous — the kind Silverfang only built for ceremonies, stacked high with pine and cedar until the flames reached above the cliff's edge and threw orange light across the whole ridge. Below us, the river ran black and fast in the dark. I could hear it if I stood close enough to the railing. I didn't stand close. I stood near the back of the crowd instead, where the firelight barely reached, and I watched Harrison place his hand on Alia Mitchell's waist. His touch was easy. Practiced. The kind of touch that said he'd decided.
