Chapter 2

The ritual words of rejection still hung in the air like poison, each syllable burning through my veins. I couldn't move, couldn't breathe, as five years of devotion crumbled around me. The grand chamber spun, hundreds of eyes fixed on my public humiliation.

My wolf thrashed wildly inside me, her anguished howls echoing through my mind. *Betrayed. Rejected. Discarded.*

Lily Carter stepped forward from the Emberfang section, her copper hair gleaming in the torchlight, Christopher's fresh mark livid against her pale skin. The triumphant smile curving her lips made my stomach twist with revulsion.

Her wolf's eyes flashed golden as she approached, predatory and mocking. The scent of her—cinnamon and something artificial—invaded my space, deliberately provocative.

"Hand over those alliances, Beta," she purred, loud enough for the front rows to hear. "They were never yours to keep."

The chamber fell silent, every ear straining to catch my response. Warriors from various packs shifted uncomfortably, many averting their eyes from the spectacle of my humiliation. Some of the older Alphas exchanged glances, their expressions unreadable.

Five years of strategic brilliance, of midnight negotiations and carefully cultivated relationships—all to be handed over to this... this interloper? Something cold and hard crystallized in my chest, pushing back the crushing pain of rejection.

I straightened my spine, channeling the power I'd suppressed for so long. Not the full force of my Lycan heritage—not yet—but enough of my Beta aura to make several nearby wolves take an instinctive step back.

"Every treaty bears my design," I replied, my voice quiet but carrying a command that made several heads turn. "Every alliance was forged by my hand. You're the interloper here, Lily."

My words trembled with barely contained fury, the ice in my tone a stark contrast to the inferno raging inside me. Christopher's eyes widened slightly—he'd never heard this edge in my voice before.

Lily's smile faltered for just a moment before returning, sharper and more vicious. "Your time is over, Quinn. The pack has a new Luna now." She stepped closer, invading my space. "One who knows her place beside her Alpha, not trying to outshine him."

So that was it. My crime had been competence. Excellence. The very traits that had built Christopher's empire were the ones he couldn't forgive.

Around us, warriors began to bare their teeth, the tension in the room thickening. Some of Christopher's most loyal fighters shifted their weight, hands flexing as if preparing to intervene. But which side they would take, I couldn't tell.

"You have no idea what you've done," I whispered, the words meant only for her ears. "What you've both destroyed."

Something in my tone must have triggered her wolf's defensive instincts. With a snarl that echoed through the chamber, Lily lunged forward, her wolf surging to the surface. Golden eyes blazed, her features sharpening as her wolf pushed against the boundaries of her human form.

I stepped back, not in fear but in disgust. To partially shift during a formal summit was a breach of the most basic protocol—a display of uncontrolled aggression that marked her as unworthy of the title she'd just claimed.

Gasps and growls rippled through the assembly. Even Christopher looked taken aback by his chosen mate's lack of restraint.

"Control your Luna, Alpha Vale," came a deep voice from the Silverleaf delegation, heavy with disapproval.

But Lily wasn't finished. She advanced again, her partially shifted form radiating hostility. "Get out," she growled, her voice distorted by elongated canines. "The Shadowmoon Pack has no place for you anymore."

My wolf surged forward, demanding release, demanding retribution. The silver Lycan within me—far more powerful than anyone in this room could imagine—strained against my control, ready to reveal herself in all her royal glory.

*Not yet,* I cautioned her. *Not like this.*

As Lily's claws extended, ready to strike, I caught a flicker of movement from the corner of my eye. Someone was approaching from the side, their aura radiating protective fury.

The first hint of my true power began to surface, a subtle silver glow emanating from my eyes. Lily faltered, confusion crossing her features as she sensed something she couldn't understand—something far beyond the Beta she thought she was challenging.
