Chapter 3

I heard about Sarahi the way you hear about a car accident on a road you used to drive every day—secondhand, through someone else's phone screen, with a strange distance that doesn't quite feel like relief.

Easton set his phone on the kitchen island in front of me without a word. The video was already playing.

The Hamptons benefit. Candlelit tables. Women in gowns that cost more than most people's rent. And there was Sarahi—standing near the bar in a dress I recognized as this season, a glass of champagne she wasn't drinking, her smile doing exactly what it had always done: performing warmth at the right temperature.

Then Vivienne Prescott walked into the frame.

I had met Vivienne once, at a museum gala, two winters ago. She had a way of standing that made the room feel like her living room. She was not loud. She was the kind of woman who didn't need to be.

She stopped directly in front of Sarahi.

The room didn't go quiet all at once. It went quiet the way water drains—gradually, then completely.

"I know who you are," Vivienne said. Her voice was pleasant. Almost warm. "I know exactly what you are. And I want to make sure everyone in this room does too."

What followed took less than four minutes. Vivienne did not raise her voice once. She named names. She cited dates. She described, with the composed precision of a woman reading from a prepared document, the specific shape of what Sarahi had spent years constructing—the borrowed credentials, the leveraged proximity, the careful campaign to attach herself to men whose last names could do what her own never had.

Sarahi said nothing. Her face went through several things in quick succession that I could see even on the small screen—shock, then the beginning of a smile that didn't land, then something that looked almost like a calculation, searching for the exit.

There wasn't one.

"You are not a guest here," Vivienne said, at the end, still pleasant. "You are not a guest anywhere. Not anymore."

The video cut off there. Someone had stopped recording. Or started shaking too hard to continue.

By midnight it had four million views.

I pushed the phone back across the island to Easton. He watched my face.

"You feel anything?" he asked.

I thought about it honestly. "Not what I expected to."

He nodded and picked up his phone. He didn't press. That was always the thing about Easton—he asked once and then let the answer be whatever it was.

I pressed my palm flat against my stomach and looked out the window at the dark street below.

I had spent three years trying to understand what I had done wrong. What I had failed to be. Now I watched the woman who had been the answer to that question get publicly unmade in four minutes on a borrowed phone at a charity event, and what I felt was not satisfaction exactly. It was more like the absence of something. A weight I hadn't known I was still carrying, setting itself down.

I went to bed before eleven. I slept better than I had in weeks.

—

Gerald called the following morning.

"I've received a communication from Remington Alexander's legal team," he said. "He's assumed a controlling position on Shaw Industries' board through the transferred shares. Formal notice of restructuring goes to Dominic this afternoon."

I was at the kitchen island again. Tea I wasn't drinking. Laptop closed this time.

"Is there anything I need to sign?" I asked.

"No. The transfer was clean. This is purely informational." A pause. "There was also a personal note. From Alexander directly. He asked if you were well."

I was quiet for a moment.

"Tell him I am."

"That's all?"

"That's all."

Gerald paused again, the way he did when he wanted to say something and was deciding whether it was his place. He decided it wasn't. "I'll relay that."

After I hung up I sat with the phone in my hand for a while.

Remington hadn't asked for a meeting. Hadn't asked for anything. He had sent one line through a channel that barely existed, moved on the shares the moment I needed him to, and now—from behind a wall of attorneys and formal language—he had simply asked if I was well.

Not *I need to see you.* Not *we should talk.* Not the particular pressure that men like Dominic applied without realizing they were applying it.

Just: *are you well.*

I set the phone down. I straightened it until it ran parallel to the edge of the counter.

Across the city, in an office on the forty-second floor, a man was reading a document that told him the one person he could not afford to have as an enemy now owned the room he was sitting in.

And somewhere overseas, in a rented apartment with the curtains drawn, a woman who had nothing left to lose was opening a browser and typing two words into a search bar.

*Plastic surgeons.*

I didn't know that part yet.

I pressed my hand against my stomach and finished my tea.

I stood in the center of the ballroom, watching my husband accept credit for the massacre I had meticulously planned. To the underworld, Craig Snyder was the King, a strategic genius who had crippled the Russian mafia. To me, he was the man who had just re-gifted my anniversary present—a Patek Philippe watch—to match the diamond bracelet dangling from his mistress’s wrist. The Senator’s daughter, Chanel, laughed at a joke only he could hear, wearing a red dress and a look of naive adoration that used to be mine. When I confronted him, expecting an apology, Craig didn't just dismiss me. He slapped me across the face in front of the city's elite, the sound echoing like a gunshot. He yanked the wedding ring off my finger, drawing blood, and placed it into Chanel’s palm, calling me a hysterical, barren relic. Later, I found the forged documents. He had signed my name to transfer every asset we built together into his sole possession, leaving me with nothing but a hush-money check. He thought I was just a scorned wife. He forgot that I was the architect of his empire. So, I drove my car off a bridge. I let the world believe I was dead. I let him mourn the woman he destroyed while I watched from the shadows, erasing his existence from my accounts. Six months later, at the Global Crime Summit, Craig stood up with a diamond ring, ready to beg my memory for forgiveness. But the doors opened, and I didn't walk in alone. I walked onto the stage holding the hand of his deadliest rival, Felix Tyson. I wasn't there to take him back. I was there to take his kingdom.
