Then I saw it: the guest room door, slightly ajar, a sliver of light spilling into the darkened hallway.

I didn't call out. Didn't announce myself. Instead, I moved forward with the same measured steps I'd used in boardrooms and negotiations. My hand reached for the door, and I pushed it open.

The scene inside froze my blood.

I didn't look at him. Didn't engage. Each word he spoke only confirmed what I already knew: this wasn't a moment. It was a revelation.

At the front door, I paused just long enough to set my wedding ring on the entryway table. The diamond caught the light, throwing fractured rainbows across the white marble. Then I stepped through the doorway and pulled it closed behind me.

The lock clicked with a finality that silenced Jaden mid-sentence. I didn't look back.

Two hours later, I sat in a sparse one-bedroom apartment in Murray Hill—a place I'd rented with the last of my personal savings, money Jaden never knew I kept. The space was clean, impersonal, but it was mine. I opened my leather notebook and began to write.

"When can we meet?" he asked finally.
